scotchy19 May 15th, 2007 11:36 AM

movie previewing.

Limewire never lets me preview any movies im downloading no matter what % the movie is downloaded. So I always have to download the WHOLE movie to figure out it is crappy.... more times than not they are good copies of movies, but I would still love to be able to stop downloading if it is the wrong movies etc... can someone please help me with maybe why it will not let me preview any movie files, it ussually will start my media player and than my media player will say its shutting down cuz there was a problem... this happens EVERYTIME.

wondering why May 16th, 2007 01:25 AM

I'd say your problem is a codec issue....
These codecs are for XP.....

Download XP Codec Pack 2.0.7.1 - XP Codec Pack is one of the most complete codec pack

You could also get the VLC media player it's free and has all the codecs pre-installed, it is one of the most reliable players out there...

VLC media player - Overview

To make the VLC media player your default player...
To make VLC your default player
Go to your shared folder (outside of Limewire) you will find this folder by clicking on one of your files in your LW library and clicking explore...

Right click on one of your movie files
Select open with
Select choose program
select VLC
and tick the box that says always use this program to open this file type
Select OK

Also Bitzi is very handy, this link will explain what it is and how to use it...
How to use Bitzi Web Lookup .. & How to use Magnet Links & Direct Connect/Browse/Chat

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 07:03 AM

??

I installed the codec for XP and it still didn't work.. is there some sort of setting you put it at? I can open the videos after they are downloaded from the shared file, but when I push preview on this one video that I have at %63 it brings up windows media and than says it has caused and error and must shut down... So after trying that a few times, I went and downloaded this VLC media player... went to the shared folder chose to open it and all other files with it and the videos that are in the shared file all play on it automatically but when I go to the video I am trying to download thats at %63 it automatically opens windows media player and the same thing happens saying it has to shut down... am I missing something?

muhctekdano May 16th, 2007 07:43 AM

Have you made VLC your default player?

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 08:03 AM

i right clicked on the video I wanted to watch out of my shared file and checked the box that said to use this player for all files if thats what your asking... and so when I choose to watch any file that I have already downloaded that are in my shared folder it goes straight to the VLC player but when I am in limewire and I have a movie half downloaded and choose to preview it, it opens windows media player and then media player tells me that it has to shut down.

muhctekdano May 16th, 2007 08:11 AM

You could go directly to your 'incomplete' folder and try to play the file from there. On my computer it's C:\incomplete, but I can't remember if that is the default location. :)

Dano

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 08:19 AM

my incompletes file isn't where yours is... how can i find it?

wondering why May 16th, 2007 12:23 PM

If I remember correctly WMP in some of the limewire versions cannot act as the previewer in limewire, that's why I suggest getting the xp codec pac as well....
When you get that sort of message it generally means that there may be some sort of corruption in the file and once fully downloaded can stop access to your shared folder..

By default your incomplete folder is in the same location as your shared...
HDD > Documents and settings > User (your name) > Incomplete Folder...;)

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 12:40 PM

i downloaded that xp codec pac... it didn't make a difference.. I can only watch the video files once they are complete... as for my incomplete folder, I did find it but everytime I open the incomplete file it says it has to be closed and closes itself.. so it looks like I am just going to have to until each movie is %100 b4 I can view it.. its not that big a deal I've been doing that all along and so far out of 50 movies downloaded only 5 were either crappy copies, wrong movies, or porn..ek.... at least I did just recently learn about bitzi though, I can then check out most of the movies that way anyhow

wondering why May 16th, 2007 12:44 PM

If it closes by itself then there is definatley a corruption in a file you are still downloading....;)

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 12:45 PM

oh.... how will i figure out which file has a corruption?

wondering why May 16th, 2007 12:49 PM

Are you sure that you cannot preview any of the downloading files...How many do you have downloading at the moment ??

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 12:56 PM

I have never been able to view any movie that I have been downloading... it will never let me preview a movie no matter what movies I am ever downloading... now I am only downloading 4 movies.. I don't like trying to download more than that because than my kb/s will go down... I can only ever watch it once its %100 and then there is not a problem

wondering why May 16th, 2007 12:58 PM

Hmmm strange...Use Bitzi like you said at least that way you will know if it's genuine or not...:)

scotchy19 May 16th, 2007 01:07 PM

I thought so to.. I can preview music but not movies... oh well... my downloading is very fast, so its not a big deal.. i generally only have to wait a few hours for a movie to finish downloading.. If the bitzi isn't good than I don't... i would just like to see it, but if I can't than i cant'

ca99999 May 16th, 2007 02:55 PM

hey i thought when u downloadinga video and if the host leave they suppose to leave it running until you finish. i get to download the item but all of sudden it stops and then at times i get no results from other downloads what can i do to get full power downloads

ISP Upload Throttling for P2P Rarely in Forum!

:(:(Hello Mr. Lee Evans & other helpful experts: I'll get this done first...Win XP Pro w/SP2, AMD Athlon XP 86, LimeWire 4.13 BETA
1400MHz clock, 1.2GByte SDRAM, 256MB Radeon 9200 Pro, HD's 70% free, home. Some weeks ago posted 'Astonishing Statement by ISP' and am puzzled there was so little helpful comment (except by 6Pac), particularly by very knowledgeable President Mr. Lee Evans, who writes great posts. Is the very serious problem of P2P Upload BANDWIDTH THROTTLING by Internet Service Providers all over North America, an unmentionable topic, similar to Social Security for politicians? I leave my computer on LimeWire sharing for days sometimes, and the successful 100% uploads (x?) compared to number of hits (y?), easily averages 1/300...during a test of almost two weeks when I upgraded my Eastlink.ca connection to an advertised optimum upload speed of 125KILOBYTES per sec (9X faster), it remained at exactly the same choked down P2P upload of 3, that's 3KILOBYTES per sec 24 hours a day. I am in the city about half a mile away from Eastlink's service node and P2P upload is still locked at 3KB per sec no matter what time of day; 4PM or 4AM...so it certainly isn't traffic loads, which they tried to use as an excuse before I learned about BW Throttling (see above mentioned previous post). I have learned a lot from the helpful technical posts in this Forum, but next to nothing about how to lessen the most serious problem facing P2P. It is rarely if ever mentioned and affects millions of P2P users. My bottom line question is why is the discussion and help about this serious problem missing? Mr. Evans, your turn. Yours truly, caseybob

birdy May 28th, 2007 12:53 AM

Hi Caseybob,
LeeWare's most recent post was June 28th, 2006. Perhaps he's not posting on the forum any more?

When you reply to an ancient thread, you may not get a reply from the OP. You can always click on the poster's name > find all posts by...that's a bit of a guide as to whether they're still active in the forum or not;)

Birdy Reply about Upload Problems

Your reply that Leeware has not posted for a year is a point well taken. However, my principal question remains; why is discussion about most serious problem facing P2P's very rare in Forums (ISP Bandwidth Throttling). I posted as 'Reply' to old but very good advice by Leeware. Should have posted 'New Thread', which will do today.
Thanks, caseybob

Ankenbauer May 28th, 2007 04:12 PM

I have tried your suggestions in limiting my search results to people with 4 stars... However when I try to download video files i get 'Need More Sources' even when the file i just searched gave results of '96' in the number column. I am connecting with DSL. I have downloaded video files in the past... Can you help?

Ankenbauer's Download Problem

Dear Ank: Realize you have already read June-2006 post that is first under Max up/down Success LW (Sticky-Leeware) and have followed at least his 'four star only' advice in /quality. But there are three others under Tools/Options/Filters which you may not have followed; /hosts, /speed, /keywords. I chose to ignore long-winded debate between Leeware & Trapjaw, except TJaws add of ' / ' to keywords. My DOWNloads are running at close to optimum and problem-free...my big beef about lack of help or discussion of UPload 'Bandwidth Throttling' by ISP's continues. If you have already configured Leeware's four suggestions, then I have to leave it to much more experienced members to help you out.
Good Luck, caseybob

Downloading Time

I am new to Limewire, just recently downloaded Pro to Windows XP Home Edition - cable connection. I've began downloading songs and have used 360 share pro in past, however the songs are taking 4+ HOURS each. Last night I left my computer on overnight and got 2 songs! Something must be set incorrectly - can someone guide me through the correct steps to get this resolved?? :w00t:

:)As Wonder Why suggested, you need to give details of what LW version you are using and your complete system. I use LW4.13.6, which is one of latest...might help. Refer you to Max Up/Down Success (Sticky - Leeware) for basic configurations...there are four important ones which help a lot. If that doesn't help, chance your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is throttling your bandwidth DOWNLOAD. Some throttle UPload so you can't share at your signed-up speed, while some throttle DOWNload to make it almost impossible for you to receive files no matter how fast the sender is; eg..T3. Thats all the advice this junior can give; some seniors will likely have much more in depth help.
Good Luck, caseybob

downloading problems

hey i'm new here so i'm VERY sorry if this has been discussed somewhere...
this is driving me crazy.
When i do a search with LimeWire a warning comes up that, in my estimation, is slowing things down to the point of almost stopping.
\"! only search results with a (lock) are an official LimeWire communications\"
This warning never came up in the past...and i've never had problems with the service. Now i do.
i cannot download songs now...or it is extreeeeeeeeeemely slow.
Ive tried enabling, disabling firewalls...installing and reinstalling the program. nothing helps.
Any tips?

wondering why July 15th, 2007 02:49 AM

That wouldn't be the problem as that padlock notice you see at the top of your searches is to notify you of a particular search result that contains a virus...
It's a 75.7 KB .exe & shows up as "Urgent LW update - download & install now". If people download that thing they could end up infected. To try to prevent careless people from downloading a dangerous file, the warning banner was added to LW's interface.

The padlock symbol doesn't apply to music or video etc, only to LW updates...

Could you supply these details please, so we can take a look at what might be slowing you down...

Big B, It looks like you may need to portforward your d-Link. see here.
Port Forwarding for the D-Link WBR-1310.
Also need to know what version Java you have. In Limewire go to help then about Limewire and that will tell you what versions of LW and also Java.
You say that you have two firewalls. Turn off Windows firewall and allow full access to Limewire in the Norton firewall.
Try these steps and lets us know how you come out.

Forcing My IP in Limewire

How do I force my IP in Limewire

thanks :D

birdy July 26th, 2007 08:36 PM

001721,

Freedom2surf are traffic shaping during peak hours.
Traffic Management Profile Change - Freedom2Support Forums
Try downloading outside of peak hours & see if your speeds improve.

You could try changing ports...no guarantees that it will help, but it's easy enough to try. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Chenge LW's listening port to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535) > Apply > ok.

Don't get confused between kilobits & kilobytes. 1 byte = 8 bits. So if your speed test gave you 810 kb/s that's roughly 100 KB/s. LW measures download speed in KB/s.

Misty Lady,

There's no force IP option in LW any more. I'm sure when the option was removed but it was a long time ago.

Hello: Assume your 810 down & 158 up is bits, not Bytes. My 1st question is; are you getting close to your signed up speeds when NOT using LW or other p2p's? If you are, then likely your ISP 'freedom2surf' is throttling your DOWNload bandwidth whenever your are using p2p. If everything is very slow downloading, you have a tech problem that your ISP should help you solve. There is no mystery about 'UPnP'; while in LW click Tools/Options and scroll far down to Advanced...second below it is config w/ recommended selection UPnP, which auto-manages your system, including router. If you cannot enable UPnP, read Big-B's post just above yours, which deals with manual port forwarding for routers etc. Just to give you a comparison speed test, dslreports.com is very good. It should approximate your other speed test and even with a 2500 mile test (West Coast for me), your latency should be well below 50. I hope it is your configuration, because if it is ISP download throttling, you will have to find another ISP without it (ask them), which are getting quite hard to find. Best I can do. Regards, caseybob

How do you force?

Question

How do you force your IP address within limewire? I went to the suggested website to obtain my IP address, but do not know how to FORCE THE IP to the network. Could someone please tell me how to do this? I believe it can help my download experience much better.

Remoc August 1st, 2007 09:01 PM

According to what I have read, the latter versions don't offer that function anymore. Do you possibly have a firewall problem?
You may need to portforeward your router/modem.

If you list the make and model # I can check it out for you, or you can go here.

Hi all, new to the forum today.

Been using Limewire without any problem until I got a bad virus and worm last week and had to format the C: and do a fresh re-install of everything.
Everything is working again EXCEPT Limewire.
Whatever version I download and run, I end up with 2 icons on my desktop. The program seems to have loaded as everything LOOKS normal when running.
I do a search, pick a song and press the Green Download button...and nothing happens. I've disabled my Firewall, no change. I've followed instructions re: creating exceptions..still no downloading.
The only thing different with my PC from before the re-install is that I removed the Soundcard I was using and am now using on-board sound.
Help please. I miss my LimeWire.
Thanks in advance

6_pac August 2nd, 2007 10:32 AM

Hi asriel57,

The downloading problem sounds like the license option. See:
License warning Option
.

Also check out this thread: How to find music

Don't know about the double icons. You could try the fixes in this thread: Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should!

asriel57 August 2nd, 2007 03:46 PM

Hi 6_pac

Thanks for the response, but I'm not even getting as far as the Licensing Question. Everything looks hunky dory File> Connected..everything normal. Search, pick song, Download button......de nada! Like it's dead, like I'm not connected to the internet but without the 'you are not connected' warning.
Had a look in the fixes thread but didn't come across anything that seem appropriate.
I don't give up easy and won't leave it alone until it's fixed.
Thanks again

Speed is of the essence

I have read thru the info and changed many settings but I am still only downloading at the speed of 1-2KB/s not real good eh? Any idea as to how I can get a faster download speed.
I am on OSX 10.3 using limewire 4.12.15 pro!
Decided to buy pro so that it'd be faster - how wrong can it all be?:bangh:

Reply to kittiepaws, asriel57, knj about various

kittiepaws Remoc right, no more address forcing in last two years LW versions. To be safe, have separate folder for all files in your LW 'Library'. Then download latest free version LW 4.13.12 BETA, configure under Tools/options, and try it, no forcing needed. If that doesn't work (make sure have separate LW content folder), go to 'Control Panel' and uninstall any LW version/s listed there (should only be one, but a few people are getting double LW desktop icons). Then, install same LW 4.13.12 BETA and configure again. The last has worked for two friends, but senior members/monitors may be unhappy with that recommendation.

asriel57 6_pac correct about 'License'. Your reply after his advice said all connections looked normal but you didn't get as far as licensing change as he suggested. If you get that far, you can change licensing. As for double icons, check your Program files & Control Panel-add/uninstall for two LW versions on your system. Refer you to suggestions to Kittiepaws above this.

knj If your configs correct, very good chance your Internet Service Provider is using 'Traffic Shaping' or 'Bandwidth Throttling' (same thing) on LWire and other p2ps. There are quite a few very recent complaint/explanation Posts about this subject under 'Download/Upload Problems'. If everything you down & upload is slow you have a system problem. If only on p2ps like LWire, likely its 'throttling' and you may have to hunt for new provider, making sure they don't use it as well.

Luck to all, caseybob

lee evans/leeware thanx for the info i'm not computer-savvy but i think i get what you meant with the ip address thing. you see when i check to see whats uploading on my computer there's only ever one or two different things being uploaded (but a lot of them) but i've added a couple of folders to share with limewire that hold a LOT of different music/films that are definitely download-worthy so I was wondering if the fact that my ip address begins with 192, cud be affecting what gets uploaded. you mentioned something cud be done about that 'forcing it thru' the thing is i have NO clue how to even begin doing that...cud you give some step by step instructions?:aweof:

ps altho i see exactly wer you're coming from with regards to people starting threads/not reading faqs' etc i think its important to remember that newbies (like myself) arent necessarily doing it on purpose. i got limewire for the obvious benefits but i'm also trying to share my files/folders as well and wen i first came to this forum i didnt have a clue how to navigate it (still not good!) and felt getting answers to problems that can help me/others is more important than making sure i post it in the correct place. but i AM putting in the effort now that i'm a little more used to the forum..... thanx for any future help with regards to sharing my folders.:xeri_ok1ani:

Reply to Leise re few uploads at same time

Hello: A few simple basics that may help. First, you have to let members know details of your system (use form) when you have questions/problems. I use slow cable connection but am always swamped with UPload sharing. How fast is your UPload connection in KILOBYTES (always slower than DOWNload)? Simple thing you might have missed; in configuration under UPLOAD, set it to at least three allowed...higher if you have hi-speed ISP connection because you correctly believe sharing is important. Check this and if no change likely your Internet Provider is throttling your UPloads...most ISP's have adopted 'Bandwidth Throtting' or 'Traffic Shaping', either for UP, DOWN, or both. Further, type 'Limewire' in your Explorer, pick File Hippo because they list all LW versions, and download latest version at top. It might help. Reply to this with your complete system info (see form) so other members can provide you with detailed advice. Good luck, caseybob

I was downloading some more songs but when I went to play one from the library there was nothing there! I have asked my brother and my dad and everyone I know whohas LimeWire but this has never happened to them. Please if you know anyone who can help me or if you can help me yourself then that would be great because I can not listen to any of my songs I spend my time downloading.
Many regards... Abzdancer95
p.s Hurry please (no pressure. Ha.) :(
