Hello Lee..I'm new to Pro and have followed your thread. My IP addy is 192.168.0.1... Dunno if that helps.I'm on a home laptop (1.5GhZ)with a new Skybroad LAN connection that claims a speed of 100Kbs.Have Port Forwarding set up (I think).
Problem at the moment is that I get loads of Sources, but downloads remain on 'Awaiting Sources".
Please help.
Thanks...Stan.

Download/Upload speeds

After following the forum for a while now, I'm hoping that someone can help me sort out why my download speeds have gone from up to 500Kbps to stuck on 'awaiting sources' or 'locating sources.'
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah...I'm on a home laptop, with a Skybroadband LAN connection that claims to be 100Kbps. It's a new router that is apparently on port Forwarding.

Hope that helps.

Cheers.

Hosts Tried

I'm going to presume that this is the proper forum location for my problem.

Each time I do a search for a movie and it lists a large number of hosts and I click to start a download all it does is indicate the number of hosts its' tried. It bebins with one and sometimes gets to the double or even triple digits before it switches to Need More Source. If I click on the item and then click on Resume it simply starts the process all over.

What's wrong?

Upload/firewall issues

:confused:I have the problem of not being able to have files upload and believe it's because of an firewall issue as the firewall brick block is always over the connection on the lower left hand side of l/w. I have tried every suggestion for disabling windows firewalls, norton security firewalls, etc., etc.

The strange thing is that I have been able to connect uploads and downloads in the past. It seems to change after a couple of months.

I see that one of the sugggestions talks about forcing an IP. I did get an IP address from the http address in the suggestion but now need advice on where to put it in limewire.

Thanks for any help you can offer

Ok folks I read al this and I must say it makes no sense at all to us Non computer people. I am not new to Limewire have been using for months now. Was using 360 Share pro. Now this past Friday Limewire froze up my computer trying to download a video. I had to force my computer to shut off by holding the power button. Then I went back to LW and all my vidoes that were saevd in my library are gone.
I try to download videos and I am looking at more than 150 host in a file T3 or better 4 stars and it can't find the host to download from. Try another and another and same results. I ran my Antivirus I did have a worm and got rid of that. If i do get a download the connection is realy slow and I only get 2 host max.
I am running windoiws X Home Edition Version 5.12600 my Ops in Micro Soft
It is a Compact Presario I do know I am now low on memory 2Mb but I have dumped alot of pics and games and got rid of some of the files in "My Favorites"
If i am asking the same question over as above I am sorry I read this several times and it seems like there one say do this and another says not good to do

Could you explain what happens? What/who is interfering & how? If a user is trying to use up all your upload slots, then limit the number per person via Tools menu > Options > Uploads > Slots.

It is possible to ban certain ip's from accessing your LW. Right click the user in the upload window & choose ban.

Downloading Movies

Why did I have to pay for the pro version of lime wire If the Movie download speeds did not increase. Yes I have tired all solutions offered to enable increased download speeds but still on most movies I get speed of only 30-60 kbps I run off of cable rr 15mbps so I should expect better speeds than that right??? turbo charged internet connection my butt. Not worth the 21 $$$:mad2:

Locking Up

I hear ya on the download speeds, I have cable and they are still slow, but I'm assuming that is because of the dedicated to upload bandwidth selected by the other users. Now I do have one new issue happening though, when I select 20-25 downloads, my program is starting to lock up! It has never done that before.

m5sueyx3 December 6th, 2007 12:28 AM

hey i need serious help...
NONE of the songs i download will actually download. it goes straight to queued. no matter how many stars/hosts its always queued and they will not download. its really annoying

What speeds do you get with a speed test?

Try doing a couple and see how they compare to what you get with LW.

Speed Test Internet Speed Test DSL Speed Test Broadband Speed Test Bandwidth Speed Test

Broadband Speedtest on ZDNet UK

jrosek January 4th, 2008 02:41 PM

Well, I am a little disapointed with the latest speed test, only 550-600kb/s down and 350 ish up.
Does this translate into poor performance on limewire?
And thank you for all your help! Jk

6_pac January 5th, 2008 08:45 AM

@ jrosek,

That speed of 600kbs is kilobits, LW shows speeds in KBs kilobytes. There are 8 bits to 1 byte. So a speed of 600kbs = 75 KBs. Your LW is working fine, your dsl service is just slower than the cable connection you had. You can probably upgrade to a faster plan but it'll be more expensive.

buff shagwell January 13th, 2008 06:04 PM

I'm also having trouble with LW lately. I've been using LW for well over a year now and had fairly good success, but it comes and goes. I only dL movie files, could'nt care less about music! I used to keep a around 100 or so files at all times, but recently I've been deleting some to keep my pc running faster. I've always allowed sharing and will continue. My os is on cable/dsl my tested speed is 2295kbps down and 245kbps up as I understand I should multiply by 8 to convert those numbers into bites or bits or whatever the hell! So then I should move the sliders in my options to match these speeds. Well after playing with it I've fallen to like 1 or 2 kbps according to the bottom of my limewire sceen! I was dL files in a matter of hours, now it takes like two freakin days! I'm new to the forum if it is'nt obvious already. I really appreciate being able to be a part of the forum. As far as my system goes, I'm not real sure as to what it is technically speaking! Its a dell dimension 3100 on windows XP hooked up on cable int. about 50miles east of Dallas,TX. I'm in a small town, but not out deep in the woods! Those people out here have to use satelite, so I'm lucky in that respect. Anyways, I need help. I use limewire everyday trying to get those new releases so I don't have to go to the theatres! Lately its been a crap shoot! I always check with bitzi and that helps, but its my DL speed that sucks for some reason! Thanks again everyone in advance!

6_pac January 13th, 2008 09:56 PM

@ buff shagwell,

Divide by 8, 2295kbps = 287KBs d/load, & 245kbps = 30.6KBs upload.
Set your d/load slider to 100% unlimited, and your upload slider 20KBs or so.

Could be you isp is shaping your speeds at peek times or theres a lot of heavy traffic at certain times that's slowing it down. Do your speeds get better after midnight or early in the morning?

How much space is left on your hdd. If your running low on memory that can cause problems. Try defragging and see if it helps.

buff shagwell January 14th, 2008 11:04 PM

LimeWire is finally dialed in!

Thanks for the help! I made the adjustments you recommended along with a couple others and WOW! Right now I'm DL'ing 7 video files at over 250 kbs and up loading is at around 20kbs. Thats the fastest I've ever seen on my machine. Last night I successfully DL'ed a few new releases in fair to good quality and currently getting a few more tonight. I think my LW program is running at its peak for the time being. Thanks again! :yahoo:

D/L with limewire pro 4.16.1. Need help

I found that, ever since I upgraded to Limewire pro 4.16.1 my D/L are extreamly slowwww. And when I try to click on: Open torrent it tells me to re-install limewire. Is this a Bill Gates try as you pay Thingy? By the time I'll be able to view the Mov. it will be in rental stage. Helllp, at my old I don't need high blood presure and stress.:beta:????
I use Windoz XP. Have two cpu's of 534gigs. Two HD. Three external HD of 4gigs. 2 pentium chips. Thanks for all the help before time. Please don't yell or make fun at me in public. I'm still learning.

buff shagwell January 28th, 2008 11:16 PM

So your having some problems getting your LW Pro to work properly? Well, first off did you get your version from LIMEWIRE or some rogue site? There are alot of fake sites out there offering copies! Did you pay for it? I had fa ree version for like a year and then I bought Pro for $29.99(U.S). You'll need to go into your settings and fine tune your LW to get the most performance. Mine is working great! It sounds like you have a nice system, its gotta be something else. Go into tools-options-downloads and and set max to 8 then slide the bar over 100%. Next go to uploads and slide it to 19.5%. Go to slots-uploads per/person (3) and max to (3) remember to click on "apply" after each selection. You should find out what your download/upload speed is to accurately fine tune. You can google for a site that will test your bandwith speed kbps and multiply by 8 that will give you your speed. Then you should use those figure to move the bars up or down to match your sytems capacity. For now just try this and see how this works. I'll be happy to help you more. I'm no expert, I got all my help from the guys on this forum. You just have to be patient and read thru all the threads that pertain to this topic.

Silk February 7th, 2008 07:40 PM

Thank you so much Buff..I printed out your reply so I can work on it tomorrow. And yes, I bought it from Limewire...every time and it comes from their site. I D/L to try. If I like stuff alote then I buy. My Mersadez is in the garage. I just use the old VW to cruzzzzze. LOL All joking aside. I do appriciate you. Kaca.... no spell checker!

Normally you'd progress from that page to a firewall setup page.

If you're missing the 'back', 'next' & 'cancel' buttons from the setup page, check out the thread below:)

Maximizing upload/download Success LimeWire

Objective:

I'm starting this thread to address two common problems which seem to appear over and over again in the forums.

General description of the problem:

1. Problems downloading content
2. Low upload count

With the influx of users to peer to peer networking and specifically New LimeWire users many of which I assume are also new broadband users there are several issues that arise out of a general lack of knowledge in what is required to participate in this type of networking model with moderate success. There are a few things that become self evident if you've spent any time on the Gnutella network and these forums.

1. Posts to the forum that don't adequately describe the problem. (for example, I can't connect.) -

The status of these problems would have a higher probability of receiving useful feedback if users provided some basic information such as; machine, operating system, connection speed, location of connection I.E. School work or home.

For example: I'm new to Limewire- I just downloaded limewire and installed it on a Windows 98 Machine with a T1 connection to the network from school. I don't have a firewall installed on my computer and don't know if there is one here but I cannot seem to connect using limewire. My other application i'e web browsers and email work fine. Can anybody tell me what's wrong?

2. Posts to the forum for issues that have been addressed in the FAQs suggests that people are not reading them.

3. Posts to forum for issues that have been addressed in other threads this also suggests that people are not even reading the threads before they post.
4. Post to areas of the forum that are not necessarily dedicated to the issues being raised. Connection Problems in the Open Discussion Forum. MAC issues in the Open Forum.

5. Finally, posts to the forum that have nothing to do with file sharing.

Now, for the problems people are having with uploading / downloading, Consider the following suggestions:

To maximize your ability to download successfully do the following things:

1. Go to tools/options/searching/Quality (show all four star results)

This will effectively filter out all of the people who are behind firewalls or have other connection issues, this will greatly reduce your frustration in downloading.

I should note however, that this could significantly reduce the amount of content you see, as most of the content being shared on the network is being shared from hosts which are poorly configured for sharing and you would probably have problems downloading from them anyway.

2. Go to tools/options/searching/speed (show all speeds)

I make this suggestion because if you are already filtering by Quality, filtering by speed will further reduce your results. If there 20 people on modem connections that have the content you want why not download from them.

3. Go to tools/options/filters/hosts under the disallow all messages from specific hosts add the following IPs: 192.168.*.* AND 10.*.*.*

I make this suggestion to filter out all the host who have incorrectly forwarded their private IP address on the network. These IP addresses are NOT routable and you will NOT be able to connect and download content from these hosts so ignore results from these guys. if

4. Go to tools/options/filters/keywords Filter out search results containing !!!

Most likely viruses or porn files emulating your search queries.

Now on to problems with uploading. If you are experiencing problems with people up loading from your computer the suggestions I made in and maximizing your ability to download see:( 1 through 4 above.) your machine could be one of these hosts.

I'll start with some general suggestions:

1. Make sure that you are not sharing from a work or school location as peer to peer traffic tends to be administratively prohibited. although it may not be explicitly blocked they could be applying quality of service rules to your traffic.

2. If you are sharing from home - leave your machine on for at least 4 hours (you can't expect people to download from you if you jump on the network do some searches and then disconnect.)

3. Finally, if you are using NAT (meaning that the IP address of your machine is 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ) now, might be able to connect, search and download from the network but no one will be able to upload from you. If you have taken the advise of others to force your IP using limewire then your half way there, as your port forwarding is working correctly. But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network. To find out what your ip is from the machine that you use to get on Gnutella open a web browser to Find My IP Address - Lookup
(write this IP down and force this IP in Limewire) If you need help testing this Just post a reply to this thread.

By implementing these suggestions you will have better luck downloading and uploading on Gnutella.

Friend Lee,I thank you for your advise Could you please explain what you say Force Thia IP in Limewire.I am not computer savvy (yet) and am lost by what you suggest..Thank You BB

birdy February 10th, 2008 07:41 PM

Hi BB,

There's no 'force IP' option in LW anymore, it's been replaced with the option to use UPnP or port forward.
Lee's post was written back in 2002 & so there have been heaps of changes since then:)

What's the problem...are you firewalled, can't connect or are you just wanting to optimise LW's performance?

If you have a firewall/conection issue, please post your system details for us.
System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!(click on link)

If you're just wanting the best performance out of LW, check out the thread below (the first few posts by murasame).

Hey sorry for the delayed response. I've been out of town. So, did you get your LW figured out yet? I see on the next page that LeeWare and Birdy have addressed the some typical problems for you. Did you get a chance to read them yet? You said you just upgraded right? So, you've used LW before? Did you get it from the official Limewire site? Are you still in the set-up stage? Does your system have the main LW page up? In the lower left portion of the screen it should show your connection. Does your desk top show a LW icon? Right click on it and "run program". I'm just giving you some basic simple tasks. I'll need you to be a little more specific in order to trouble shoot the problem. The forum has a F&Q section as well. Plenty of info there. I'll be glad to help, just give me enough info. Let me know, and we'll get it running. :xeri_ok1ani:

Well you seem to know what you are talking about so I thought I would ask a question.
I am pretty new to limewire. When I origianally downloaded it I had now problems. But now when i do a search the progress bar advances slowly but nothing shows up in the feed of possible songs to download.
I have no idea why nothing is coming thru

Hi All,

I haven't posted on this forum for a long long time. Back when LW was 4.12.x. I just downloaded the most recent LW from the main page.

I have about 30gb of stuff to share.. mostly .mp3's at 128 or 192 quality.

I have Windows XP SP2 (upgraded from 1a) and now about to upgrade to SP3.

How much RAM / Memory does LW 4.16 need to use to operate properly? Can a user set the preferences so that the system allocates enough RAM to the program each time it is started?

Also, I'm still on Dialup, using my local free dialup ISP (nocharge.com / IP @64.40.62.67) but I use a few local wifi connections a lot. I get lots of varying speeds from LW while downloading files off LW.

Only thing I know for sure about your updates, is DON'T download the new Service Pack 3 (SP3) for Windows XP...it is a mess full of glitches they will be patching forever with updates; stick with SP2. It is a bit difficult to share 30 Gigs of stuff or download more with only a dial-up, which I think is a max of 56K. Even with the odd wi-fi hook-up it sounds like your computer is fairly dated because of your concern with RAM. A few suggestions based on speculation about your system, which all, unfortunately, cost money.
First, your dial-up is a major choke-point with narrow bandwidth - would suggest you pay an Internet Service Provider for bottom end hi-speed service. Second, suggest 512MBytes RAM and 1GigaHertz computer clock speed is bare minimum for your system if you want to have LWire on and still be able to do other tasks. Hope Vegan replies to my questions and this post to you helps a bit. Let me know, caseybob

How to use Magnet Links & Direct Connect

Hello! I have Windows XP - computer is only just over a year old DEll XPS and have an extremely fast cable connection. I had limewire pro for a year with lightning downloads. My year ran out and I renewed last week with the upgrade to 4.18 and connections have been poor to non-existant all week. Limewire recieved payment but I have only been able to download two songs in a week.
Is the upgrade at fault? Is there something else I need to get for the rest of the internet gives me full download whilst my Limewire is stuck in "starting connection" 59 out of 60 minutes an hour.
Please help. Thanks!

port fowarding

I need help with manual portfowarding for limewire. I dowloaded the program a few days ago and I have very slow downloads. The port 6346 is busy so I have to us another port. Also the IP address that my computer gives me via the command prompt is different than the one I receive from the "what is my ipaddress" website
1. OS version? Windows xp pro
2. What firewalls you have? I have just the firewall that comes with windows
3. How much ram? 1.86GHz
4. Hard Disk space available? 160gb
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) cable, I am in a dorm with wireless internet.
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? I don't have my own router
I am connecting wirelessly via the Dorms' network
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? student accomodation
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? Limewire 4.18.1-- Java 1.6.0_07
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Unknown
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It said 'your test worked'
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. Yes I am sharing the connection with other computer in this building
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. I have used limewire at home before but I had my own router and I portfortwarded with my own router, the port 6346 was not busy, I was using XP home edition, and my ip address was 192........, and it seemed much easier the last time I did it.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? Yes I see the brick and it say "limewire has detected a firewall" which is what I am trying to remove without disabling my firewall on my computer.
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall. I am using spybot and AVG.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). I am in the US
17. Has anything in your setup changed recently? Have you updated your version of LW or Java? Have you added any new software or new hardware? Have you updated any software? Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc?
