So to make sure I get what you're saying, I should change the number of download to one and therefore, I would get all available sources just for one file until that one is done?

LeeWare March 24th, 2005 06:07 PM

Clarification

There is no relationship between the number of simultaneous downloads and the number of sources. What I'm saying is that sometimes you'll download a file that will have a few well connected sources and the file will download at good speeds. However, if you download a lot of files at the same time and they all have good speeds, you will maxout your download capacity and slow all of your downloads.

connection problems

Several weeks ago I began using LW and had no problems other than download speed. (I had dial up). Last week I had a cable modem installed and now my downloads are even slower than before. I have a new Dell, XP OS, McAfee Viruscan. My firewall is set to allow open sharing of files. I have checked my transfer capability and it is typically over 1000K. Any suggestions?

LeeWare March 25th, 2005 04:35 PM

Shameless Plug

There is a group that produces. A non-infringing video series. These videos are available for download via LimeWire. I know that you can get at lease 10 sources and completely saturate your download capacity. If this works then the problem is not with your connection but with the people you are trying to download from.

http://www.welcometothescene.com

Let me know how this works out.

Hope this helps.

deafguy March 25th, 2005 05:48 PM

Jesus what hootie was trying to say is he/she is downloading at very slower rate than before no matter what connection he/she is downloading from. I think that is what he/she need help on.

deafguy March 25th, 2005 05:52 PM

And I'm still having a problem with number of sources to download from for one file. It seem no matter what, I can't get any more than 6 sources for a single file no matter how many sources are available. Can you please help me with that?

Lord of the Rings March 25th, 2005 06:01 PM

deafguy: Leeware was not answering in response to Hootie's question.

For Hootie ... I'd suggest you check the rest of the forums on how to optimise your settings or at least start off with deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire So you can start afresh almost so to speak. Also see: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities.

eg: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...028#post116028

deafguy for your problem I can assure you that you'd get much much better results if other people were uploading from you. Even vary your shared files so there's different types there from one week or month to the next so you get different types of people with different links to help you with your results. Yes uplding helps search & downld results. And no you'e not going to get max # of sharers if their connection quality is poor or their upload slots are full!

deafguy March 25th, 2005 08:37 PM

What do I do in opition so that people can better uploading from me?

I don't understand the following: 3. Finally, if you are using NAT (meaning that the IP address of your machine is 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ) now, might be able to connect, search and download from the network but no one will be able to upload from you. If you have taken the advise of others to force your IP using limewire then your half way there, as your port forwarding is working correctly. But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network. To find out what your ip is from the machine that you use to get on Gnutella open a web browser to http://www.whatismyip.com
(write this IP down and force this IP in Limewire) If you need help testing this Just post a reply to this thread.

I am new to Limewire and new to Wireless internet and a router. So I don't know what means to force my ip or router...can you explain in laymens language??? Thanks!

The next time you are online why don't you send me an email with your IP address and a schedule of when you will be online. I will attempt to direct connect to your machine to see if I can upload anything from your machine.

LeeWare March 29th, 2005 07:10 PM

I highly recommend the following.

1) make sure everything is set to the defaults that is, undo any changes you made to try to get this to work.

2) Assuming that with the default configuration you are able to search and download then the only thing you are looking to do is to be able to upload files.

3) Do some research on how to forward tcp port 6346 to your private IP address.

That should solve your issue assuming you don't have any XP or Norton firewalls installed.

wfdrouinjr March 30th, 2005 04:36 PM

Test Page was a success!

BUT

Received incoming this session: false

STILL!!!!!!

i have set static ip (on LAN--WANip is dynamic)
" " " fowarded port 6346
" " " opened port 6346 through firewalls (router + ZA expert rules)
" " " forced ip
ect...ect...ect...ect..........
i have searched/studied this forum/ router help pages/ ect... for weeks w/o solution.
LW works ok now as shielded leaf but needs a couple DAYS to REALLY heat up and i'm a compulsive rebooter.
i know my system VERY well to be only a selftaught wannabe PCguru. this "Old Dog" IS learning new tricks lol.
i did find a broadband forum whose users on my ISP accuse them of blocking ports and of course my ISP denies this.
i hope in the near future to serve my own webpage so i wonder about port 80 too...
SSSSOOOOOO.......:

Q1: does Test Page test only outgoing port?

Q2: does/would/could ISPs block ports incoming yet leave same port outgoing open?

Q3: can "Yall here" point me to utilities and/or net services (repudible yet pref. free) that will list all my open/closed ports so i can find alternates for this and future needs?
my skills include setting up a noncritical boot part/OS to run w/in routers DMZ for these (Q3) tests but such a hassle i want only once so comprehensive tests are a must.

Q4: please suggest workable alternate ports that i can try, i saw a post here somewhere but lost it.
Q4b: can i get ultrapeer status (my goal) using alt ports? i think so but...
Q4c: since outgoing 6346 is working will changing just the incoming port do the job? refer to Q4b above.

last resort i have to try "The Proxy Solution" , hard to trust that guy though lol.

thank u for all the help already found and to come.

wfdrouinjr March 30th, 2005 04:49 PM

oh...also (off topic)

Q5: does opening these one or two ports to this one open-source app constitute a security risk outside of my shared folders?

LeeWare March 31st, 2005 05:33 AM

Solutions

Shielded Ultrapeer is a normal status for leaf nodes.

I'm not sure what it is you are attempting to accomplish? However, I think that you have done a lot more than you needed to.

With that being said. you will not become an ultrapeer if you cannot receive connections. You will not become an ultrapeer if you machine has a history of short or low uptimes. You will not become an ultrapeer if you have a low bandwidth connection and finally, you will not become an ultrapeer if the network doesn't need anymore.

If you want to port scan your computer try this http://scan.sygate.com

They offer several different types of scans.

My recommendation do only that which is necessary to achieve the desired result.

becoming an ultrapeer IS what im trying to accomplish and not recieving IS the root of my problem i think.
i have broadband cable and even with the current tweaking i stay up longer than most of the ultrapeers i connect to.
while im finding a workaround id like to confirm my isp is blocking and post thier name HERE

...i know i did...setting expert rules for LW in Zone Alarm caused a VERY weird effect and i had to delete those rules...they didnt help anyway...i might try to recreate that situation in future and post that "bug" elsewhere.

thanks for the link it will prove usefull, but currently they only scan "common ports" 1-1024 not 6*** not 49152-65535.
btw the post about alternate ports was HERE

wfdrouinjr April 1st, 2005 01:51 AM

oops!!

just checked my logs and found out ZA is blocking so i need the expert rules after all!!!
currently trying private port 60689 let u know what happens

DUUHHHH!!!!

wfdrouinjr April 9th, 2005 10:55 PM

got it working but....

busybusybusyoh... HI!
kk just a quick update...
found one little button hidden deep in ZA's front end (block servers) that i must have set some time ago...and forgot...duh again
fixed it (no expert rules) and changed back to port 6346
recieved incoming: TRUE!!!
much better ul/dl speeds
but after running 8-10hrs (still as leaf!!) system started dragging and buddy complained that the whole LAN/WAN gateway was slowing down
found out the router was blocking a LOT of "ping of death" attacks and ZA blocking even more (i presume other exploits)...all aimed at EVERY port i had tried to run LW on
connection view shows "dropped I/O" @ 20-80%/0%...i quessing same problem
SCARRRRYYYY
sooo...until i learn (even MORE) about security....
port forwarding disabled...
LW reset to defaults (PnP)...
and i'll TRY to be happy with "leaf" for a little while....

I highly recommend that you read upon it.

can i have a speed of 10 KB/s with a 56k modem in LimeWire?!

i have the pro version and it's the same speed of the other version!

asdqwe May 13th, 2005 04:40 PM

56k modem.... 52kmax cuz of damn government
52/8 = 6.5KBps MAX!!!
it is IMPOSIBLE to go above that on dialup
you may see it say 7, but thats only the 6.x being rounded up

Hi Lee
Thanks very much for all your tips.

Have read the whole discussion but not too good at technical interpretation.

Sorry.
How exactly does one 'force the ip' I found at the web site?

Am using LW 4.8.1 Pro on a Mac with OS 10.3.9

I do have a netGear router.
Have set the options correctly I think ???

Just ticked UPnP in LW Prefs. and also in router.

Strange place to post such a question. You're obviously a windows user I presume. See: Adding songs to iTunes & iPod It's got lots in it & a link to tutorials & also an iPod forum which doubles as an iTunes forum. Links there can get you many 3rd party stuff such as audio & visual plug-ins. It helps if you search the forum before posting in future. Most answers are already here.

Maximizing upload/download Success LimeWire

Objective:

I'm starting this thread to address two common problems which seem to appear over and over again in the forums.

General description of the problem:

1. Problems downloading content
2. Low upload count

With the influx of users to peer to peer networking and specifically New LimeWire users many of which I assume are also new broadband users there are several issues that arise out of a general lack of knowledge in what is required to participate in this type of networking model with moderate success. There are a few things that become self evident if you've spent any time on the Gnutella network and these forums.

1. Posts to the forum that don't adequately describe the problem. (for example, I can't connect.) -

The status of these problems would have a higher probability of receiving useful feedback if users provided some basic information such as; machine, operating system, connection speed, location of connection I.E. School work or home.

For example: I'm new to Limewire- I just downloaded limewire and installed it on a Windows 98 Machine with a T1 connection to the network from school. I don't have a firewall installed on my computer and don't know if there is one here but I cannot seem to connect using limewire. My other application i'e web browsers and email work fine. Can anybody tell me what's wrong?

2. Posts to the forum for issues that have been addressed in the FAQs suggests that people are not reading them.

3. Posts to forum for issues that have been addressed in other threads this also suggests that people are not even reading the threads before they post.
4. Post to areas of the forum that are not necessarily dedicated to the issues being raised. Connection Problems in the Open Discussion Forum. MAC issues in the Open Forum.

5. Finally, posts to the forum that have nothing to do with file sharing.

Now, for the problems people are having with uploading / downloading, Consider the following suggestions:

To maximize your ability to download successfully do the following things:

1. Go to tools/options/searching/Quality (show all four star results)

This will effectively filter out all of the people who are behind firewalls or have other connection issues, this will greatly reduce your frustration in downloading.

I should note however, that this could significantly reduce the amount of content you see, as most of the content being shared on the network is being shared from hosts which are poorly configured for sharing and you would probably have problems downloading from them anyway.

2. Go to tools/options/searching/speed (show all speeds)

I make this suggestion because if you are already filtering by Quality, filtering by speed will further reduce your results. If there 20 people on modem connections that have the content you want why not download from them.

3. Go to tools/options/filters/hosts under the disallow all messages from specific hosts add the following IPs: 192.168.*.* AND 10.*.*.*

I make this suggestion to filter out all the host who have incorrectly forwarded their private IP address on the network. These IP addresses are NOT routable and you will NOT be able to connect and download content from these hosts so ignore results from these guys. if

4. Go to tools/options/filters/keywords Filter out search results containing !!!

Most likely viruses or porn files emulating your search queries.

Now on to problems with uploading. If you are experiencing problems with people up loading from your computer the suggestions I made in and maximizing your ability to download see:( 1 through 4 above.) your machine could be one of these hosts.

I'll start with some general suggestions:

1. Make sure that you are not sharing from a work or school location as peer to peer traffic tends to be administratively prohibited. although it may not be explicitly blocked they could be applying quality of service rules to your traffic.

2. If you are sharing from home - leave your machine on for at least 4 hours (you can't expect people to download from you if you jump on the network do some searches and then disconnect.)

By implementing these suggestions you will have better luck downloading and uploading on Gnutella.

Wow, what a monster thread and sadly most of it is like japanese braille to me.

I am a total virgin to file sharing and thus far my issue has been the speed of downloads - I am supposed to have some super quick Cable connection where I get 2000 Kb/s but when I am
downloading the maximum I appear to get is 15 Kb/s.

Would anyone be kind enough to offer me some words of wisdom.

Thanks in advance. :)

slow downloads

--Artichoke

Regarding the speed of your downloads:

With all P2P networks you can only download as fast as the people on the other end can send the files to you. You will also notice that even though you can download that is get files from the network to your PC at a rate of 2Mbps. I am relatively confident that you cannot send files into the network (upload ) at that same rate. Well, this is true for most users. Also, recently I've received complaints from people not able to download at good speeds. After much troubleshooting we learned that the ISP was throttling P2P traffic. Nothing you can do about this short of changing ISPs.

The only way to do this to my knowledge is modifying the source code. -- I think the maximum is capped at 10 hosts.

Thanks for the explanation LeeWare. I guess as I become more acquainted with all the nuances involved in file sharing I will understand better.

Is there anywhere I can test my speeds and is there anywhere that explains, bit rates, ping rates, throttles etc in laymans terms?

Thanks again

Don't worry about blocking the private-net IP addresses as downloads from those hosts are likely to be more reliable than they were when I first started the thread.
