Answers to your questions Dear ams123, Let me start by saying that I hope that you own the copyrights to the 100 movies you added to your shared folder otherwise you will have big problems real soon. If you are using a linksys router you should make sure that you are forwarding port 6346 to the IP address of the computer running limewire. As for hits and no uploads, the hits just mean that someone searched and your machine returned the file or files you are sharing as a result. In the column that shows x/y x=actual uploads and y = attempted uploads. If you see a lot of y and no x then that is a sure indication that people are trying to upload your files but are not able to for one reason or another. Searching for files you are sharing -- No you will not see search results for files coming from the same machine you perform the search on. If you want to see the results produced by the machine sharing the files you should install limewire on another computer (assuming you have access and control of the other machines) and perform the search from one of those. The quality of a file is based on a few things 1) connection speed when you first start limewire there is a mechanism that can determine your true speed aside from what you specified in the speed box. 2) Whether you are firewalled or not determines quality. Attempted vs successful uploads etc. 3) Machine Load that is, the number of people connected to you attempting to upload files from your machine. These things impact your bandwidth and general file availability and thus impact the quality of the results you return. |
IP Adress I recently got a new ISP. When I had my old ISP I checked my IP address; and I just checked it now (with the new ISP). It's different. Is it different because of the new ISP? Caryl |
Yes |
I have a question... I can try to use limewire but my downloads are only 1kb-20kb. I am currently using warez and my downloads are 40kb-75kb. I have a broadband connection. Is there a difference in ports with the limewire and warez and thats why i cant download very fast with it...?? I really want my limewire back but so far warez is faster so I am forced to use it for speed. Let me know what I can do in order to get my lime wire back... Thanks for all the help in advance |
answers to your questions Dear Calstylin, I don't think that the problem is limewire as so much as it is the sources on limewire that you are downloading from. Hope this helps. |
Slow computer I tried the earlier version but the slow down still occurs when I activate limewire. Thanks for all your help but i give up. |
I have tried all sorts of sources. My brother in the other room has dsl and he gets downloads at 100kbs sometimes. I hooked up the dsl to my computer and I got downloads at those speeds. Is there a different setup for broadband connections??? |
Hey. im very new to LimeWire, i switched because my favorite P2P, WinMX is gone forever. I want to download files, but there is no Download Manager in the system! Is something wrong? |
ripoff i paid 39 dollars 4 limewire and it is my opinion that limewire is nothin more than a scam. i have had problems with them and they won't email me back. i think anyone who like me pay that kinda money got screwed |
Thats what most people say when they have been scammed. Limewire basic is free. And pro cost $18.88 for pro and 6 months of upgrades you can get them at the link below. If I were you I would contact the site that scammed you and try to get my money back. It would also be a good idea to contact your credit card company and let them know you were scammed and try to get your money back from them. Good Luck http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28751 |
Slow computer Dear Grandpa I did use the site you suggested to get my limewire |
I do not think you got it orriginally from the offical site there is no $39 dollar charge. LimeWire pro is $18.88 and basic is free. There is a $38.50 charge for the disk. Allot of the sites that scam people send them to the official site to download it after they take there money. Did you buy the disk and did you get pro or basic |
Slow Computer Dear Grandpa Sorry I sent that message because I thought your last post was for me. I got Limewire from your site and only paid $18.00. My only problem in that when I us Limewire It slows my computer down so if I use other programs while it is running it takes 30second or longer to react to everything. even the limewire is slow loading taking about 1 1/2 to two minutes. All my downloads are 1-15kbs sometime one will go to 20kbs but never higher. It take me three to four days to get download. I have dsl and I have read some of the earlier posts and has the same problem plus the slow down. I just don't know what to do up until about four weeks ago limewire worked fine and I could us other programs and the internet while it was running. |
Greetings, We have gone through the 28 pages of posts so far on this thread as well as a few of the linked pages and have found some good answers to questions we had. Definately some good information in this forum. We have the problem when using Limewire that we can''t tell the quality of files downloaded until it is 100% downloaded. This was referred to a couple of times but no solution was offered. I wondered if anyone posts anywhere about the qualities of downloads. We have also been using the mac version of Azureus 2.3.0.2, which we really like. It works very well with the exception that it freezes our system almost every day a few times, requiring a hard restart with no force quits available. Not good! Been searching that forum also... We are on a Mac G4 1.5 MHz with system 10.3.9. The advantage of Azureus is that you can download a torrent after reading the posts on it (for example on demonoid.com (their server is down right now) and seeing that, then it is pretty much guaranteed to be a good file. Never had a bad one. With Limewire you have no guarantee and we just got one of those movie files which is dead and is now stopped at 98% with no sources. We also mistakenly got porno files a couple of times named as applications and videos both. Obviously a total waste of time and bandwidth. So, our question is, how can we determine the quality of a file with some sort of reliability before we download it. Also we are not sure if it is necessary but the term "forcing the IP" was discussed many times and we do not see this option in the Mac version of Limewire 4.9.4. This seems to be necessary in Azureus but not sure about Limewire. Are these questions appropriate for this forum? Thanks |
Dear Calstylin The way you outline your connection makes me think that you are on a dial up connection or are sharing your broadband connection with you brother or other members of your family. Which one is it? Do you dial up to the Internet? Or are you sharing the one connection with other people in your house. If the later is true then their network activities will impact your downloads. Let me know. Quote:

Re: Slow computer Is your computer slow or are your downloads slow? What OS are you using? Quote:

Look at the manual Perhaps you should read the manual http://www.limewire.com/english/content/userguide.shtml Quote:

Re: Slow Computer What are the specs on your computer (CPU,MEM, Internet Connection etc.) I would start by making sure your computer is not acting as an ultrapeer. Also the cause of system slowdowns is virus infections and spyware. You could start by downloading the Anti Spyware Tool from Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en You should also check to see if you have any malicious software running on your system. http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx Check those two out and let us know what happens. A couple of answers Whenever you are downloading videos in limewire you have the ability to preview the movie downloads. Obviously this is not true for files delivered in other formats. Perhaps a glance at the user manual is in order. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/userguide.shtml Quote:

Previews We didn't phrase our question correctly. We did try the preview for this particular video and it did not work (although previously it has - preview did not open), so we made a copy of the partially downloaded file (about 50%) and opened it in the VLC player (which usually works even for files which have the pieces downloaded separately) and it showed a black screen as it played with no sound. Of course, this should have given us a clue as to what was coming, but we decided to finish the download and see anyway, but it is still stuck at 98%. Usually the VLC player allows you to see enough of a preview that you can at least see what the file is and approximate quality. I guess this is the best we can do.... However for an application etc you can't preview it, so don't know until you have downloaded it all. It seems that there should be more information attached to the files so one can tell. Is there anyway to do this, other than use a different software for downloading from a torrrent, which does have information attached to it? I like Limewire and it behaves well, more than I can say for Azureus. |
Searching Sorry, couldn't find the "searching" category, so I assumed Download/upload would be fine. Anyone know how to input chinese characters into searches...? I tried to copy and paste, but all i got out of it are boxes and results i got were just everything not related to my search.. Help, and help please Medicca, thanks |
please forgive my ignorance but can someone tell me how to force my ip in limewire tried everything barr chucking this usless piece of junk out of the window plse help:( |
Hippychick, They removed that option as it is no longer necessary. Where are you sharing from home/school/work etc? What is the specific problem you are having. |
2 KBPS DOWNLOADS........... Followed all suggestions from leeware....i got limewire recently but downloads are no faster than 10kbps, and most are 2 or 4kbps. I have dsl and download from sources at least as fast. Are these normal speed WITHOUT having the PRO version??? Does the pro version make all the difference? I though having dsl would make these downloads faster but their all VERY SLOW. Also...limewire finds no firewall issues and always says I have a very fast connection, so I'm just very confused...... |
Possible Problems No getting the pro version will not solve this problem. There are two possible problem which have been covered again and again in this thread. 1) Overloaded sources 2) ISP rate-limiting P2P downloads 3) Your connection is not as fast as you think. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest |
slow downloads Just did the test. download speed is 1408 kbps and upload is 364. I guess it's one of the other 2 reasons u mention...anything else i can do? why would downloads come in at .5kbps from a t1 source? |
Dear steakfrit , Try files with multiple sources -- sometimes the hosts are overloaded serving many downloaders. Other times, it's companies that release fakes. If they can keep you downloading a bogus file for weeks they effectively keep you from downloading the real files. |
Help pretty please Hi everyone, I recently bought this computer ( a dell , windows XP) and did the Limewire thing. Only I am totally confused, I seem to be downloading previews instead of movies, and now when I search it won`t allow me to download, I have lime wire 4.3.2 , when I put in a search item it comes up with choices at the left hand side but I can`t click on them ....... I am very very new to this and know nothing about it at all, just figured I`d come here and see if anyone could tell me anything so that maybe I might stop watching my screen do nothing at all , har har..... |
there is a newer version out now. it is 4.9.33. download the newer version and c if that helps |
venus4 The link below should help. The latest version is not 4.9.33 it is 4.9.37 http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...176#post154176 |
People seem to be uploading from me just fine but I never forced my IP for use on Gnutella. I can't direct connect to myself does that mean others can not either? I was really just curious as to weather forcing the IP is required with every machine or just some. And with the direct connect problem is that is because I need to configure my router because my firewall is disabled? Thanks :) EDIT: Scrap the first question I just read on and found that the forcing of IP's is no longer necessary |
No connection to self You cannot make connections to yourself. To determine if people can upload from you or if they are even trying check the stats column in the library tab. You will see numbers such as x/y where x = successful uploads and y = attempted uploads. |
I don't have any problem sharing my files. I am an ubber Naruto/Bleach sharer and I have people downloading from me 24/7 literally with a success rate of about 6 out of 7. I just can't direct connect to myself. I gave my brother my IP and he can't direct connect to me either. I guess it's not a big deal, I was just curious. Either way though thanks for the help. |
Slow downloads/computer Having scrolled through endless pages about this isssue , I too have the same problems in that my computer slows down when using LW and my downloads are very slow, 1-9 Kbs, when I was downloading at a much higher download speed a few days ago. I have tried a few of the suggestions posted in various threads/posts but to no success!! Spec is: CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1.9 Ghz 756Mb Ram 120Gb & 60Gb Hard drives O/S: Windows XP Pro SP2 A/V: McAfee Internet Security Suite Microsoft Anti Spyware installed NTL broadband@ 1Mb, tested & not blocking p2p I have been downloading from emule @ 80Kbs tonight. If anyone can find a solution to this issue, please let us know!!!! |
I recently upgraded both LimeWire (4.8.1 to 9.3.37) and Windows (ME to XP) at the same time. Since this upgrade, I have not been able to download at the same speed I was at before the upgrades. My ISP says they do not limit P2P activity. My download / upload speeds have been tested today at 322 Kbps / 109 Kbps repectively. I have adjusted the sliders in LimeWire so that I am downloading at 36.75 KBps and uploading at 10.13 KBps. I have Norton anti-virus software that permits all with respect to LimeWire. Also, Windows Firewall has been disabled. I was able to acheive download speeds of up to 32 KBps before the upgrades. Now I generally get speeds of about 7 KBps regardless of the number of sources. I was able to witness an upload today of 11 KBps from my computer while I was downloading at 6 KBps. This seems wrong to me. I have read several threads on this topic and would greatly appreciate any suggestions that anyone has. |

Pokpok, I've been using Kaazaa for a very long time and just recently started trying LimeWire. My experience goes the other way around: with Kaazaa there were long waits, loads of useless searchresults and corrupted downloads, I found it much harder to find the music I was looking for and downloading took like forever. I find the up- and downloading speed, quality of the music, searchresults etc. much better with LimeWire. Any idea how it's possible that your experience with Kaazaa is so much better than mine? |
I have just installed Limeware and I've got to say it's the dog's thingies and mutt's nuts all rolled into one! I am currently downloading at around 120KB/s and uploading at 30KB/s. I have a 2GB broadband connection from Ntl. |
minimizing download success Hi everyone, Unlike everyone in this forum, I want to minimize download success and search results and here is why: I have limewire installed in my Windows XP Home machine and I'm trying to control or limit the search results and download sources because my teenager brother is downloading huge movie files and is eating up from my limited internet access that has only 3GB download quota per month. I don't want to use the options menu in Limewire to limit search results because my brother can change them back. I also don't want to block the port completely using router's configurations because then he'll be suspicious and try to fix it. Is there a way to handle this smartly since I don't want stop all the downloads, but instead decrease download sources and search results. Can I do it by configuring router or Windows XP settings so that my brother doesn't find out I changed settings? FYI: I'm using norton internet security as a firewall. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks. |
ISP Differences ? At home and at work I use identical Macs (Dual 1.8 G5, OS X 10.4.4) with Limewire Pro 4.10.5. Work connection is SDSL, 1.1 Mb upload/download. Home connection is cable modem, 6 Mb down, 500 kbps up. Both copies of Limewire are configured identically with respect to search results & filters, etc. Bandwidth tests at work consistently report around 850 kbps up/down. At home, they report around 3.8 Mbps down, 350 kbps up. My problem: at work, even tho much slower connection, I can average Limewire downloads around 90-100 kbps. At home, supposedly 5-6 times faster, I only average around 10-20 kbps. I've been reading in posts about ISPs sometimes rate-limiting P2P download speeds; even tho I've called my home provider and they deny doing so, I'm still suspicious. Both home and work connections use static IP addresses. At work, there is a hardware firewall on the network that's been opened to Gnutella on port 6346. At home, I use a software firewall (NetBarrier), also opened to Gnutella on port 6346. Given all the above info, is there anything I can do to improve download speeds at home? Besides switching ISPs, what can be done if they rate-limit P2P ? |

SLOW DOWNLOADS hi LeeWare I am a very new user to Lime, tried out the basic prog, everything went really well I then bought Lime pro and since then downloads take for ages. I have read your thread on downloading and carried out your instructions so I am now keeping my fingers crossed. I have found my Ip address how do I now force this into lime. Thank you so much for your help patsy dumbhead |
Re: SLOW DOWNLOADS Quote:
Forcing your IP will not resolve the problem Besides, I think that they removed that option from limewire. Sorry |
hey sorry to bother you but you seem very knowledgeable with limewire...we have 4 users on my computer (myself and 3 kids0 they aren't having trouble with limewire as far as downloading however, i am. when i open limewire, the colors and resolutions change and it won't allow me to download but everyone can upload from me...i've tried everything i know(limited) but it isn't helping...can you spare time to help me ppplllleeeeaaassee. i had basic for a long time with no problems and then one day it became an issue so i upgraded to pro but sstill no luck...hopefully, i've given you enough info for help..let me know if you need any other info--nicole:D |
Suggestions Nicole, If I understand what you said correctly. You have 3-4 copies of limewire installed on the same computer under different profiles and all of the them work except yours. If this is true, then I would verify that following. 1) on each of the different installations compare the versions. Help/About (its been a while.) 2) from one of the installations that "works" search for something and then download it. 3) on your copy repeat the same search and try to download the same file. What are the results? |
Suggestion Hello I posted this on the main board, but since a lot of my post has to do with this particular thread, I decided I should post it here. I am sorry for adding to the length of this post! Does "Maximizing .." sticky need to be updated?? Ok, I am getting no uploads, so I search the FAQ etc. etc. trying to find an answer. I start to read the sticky post about maximizing your downloads/uploads.. I get to the part about "forcing" your IP, and I start looking everywhere for a button to let me force my IP. This is after wading through 8 or 9 pages of you-know-what. Finally I come to the conclusion that there is no button to check anymore. It would have been nice to know that before I wasted all that time looking for it! Anyway, I am back to square one and I really don't feel like reading the whole 30 pages of that sticky note. So my suggestion is to remove any obsolete information that is in it (if there is any) and perhaps shorten it to a managable length so old ladies like me can read it in the span of an evening. I believe I have correctly forwarded the port, and I am no longer seeing the firewall symbol. What more do I need to do to share my many files? I would be so grateful for some help. Thanks |
Ongoing Problems With Downloads I've followed LeeWare's excellent instructions, as well as read the FAQ on firewalls, but am also experiencing a real problem in not being able to download. All I'm getting are busy hosts, Need more sources etc, with the occassional song actually connecting and getting downloaded. I've got a strong connection and the songs appear when I do the search function, I try and download only those on Cable and with low host #'s, ie: under 10,but it just isn;'t working. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |
Mine isn't working Hi, my tools only has 'statistics' and not an 'options' option. Please Help!! Starsion54:eek: |
Hope you're using a Mac;) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...97&postcount=7 |
3. Finally, if you are using NAT (meaning that the IP address of your machine is 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ) now, might be able to connect, search and download from the network but no one will be able to upload from you. If you have taken the advise of others to force your IP using limewire then your half way there, as your port forwarding is working correctly. But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network. To find out what your ip is from the machine that you use to get on Gnutella open a web browser to http://www.whatismyip.com (write this IP down and force this IP in Limewire) If you need help testing this Just post a reply to this thread. My IP is 192.168.0.1 i dont understand what you are telling me to do when you say to force the ip of my router. i did what you said to do in part three of the downloading portion. but i dont know where to go from there. i am running windows xp home edition from home over a cable connection at 54 mbps. please help. |
That info about being on a network is a little out of date. LW now has the ability to connect easily with such users. No need to ban such addresses. Only problem being that nobody will be able to direct connect with such users. But still, it does show that you're not configured properly. And it is as a result of your router. You either need to enable UPnP or manual port forward. See these sections here Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link) The term Force IP has been replaced. It is no longer used. It has been replaced with port forwarding. eg: Manual port forward instructions & sample image. But see the above link about connections to get full instructions about the whole process. |
