Windows registry issues

I used to be a Macman back in the Classic days, pre Win 95, and then got cheap and went Intel. Now everything's changed in both camps around ease of use, software compatibility, etc., but one thing remains the same:

Windows sucks!!

Have a great day,

Bill

Just thought I'd update all those who tried to help with my issue - i.e. the Magent registry key that couldn't be deleted. My PC is a CISNet PC bought at Staples. Hardware is great, all industry standard leading stuff, dual core Athlon, MSI mobo etc. However, rather than ship their PCs with Windows media kits, they create an invisible system recovery partition on the hard drive which installs Windows for you. It seems that due to some latency between my too fast CPU and the too slow IDE hard drive, the registry was getting corrupted whenever I did a system recovery, and apparently was corrupted when I opened the box after getting it home from the store. You'd think their installer would be intelligent enough to manage the hardware they are selling, but no.

Anyway, after doing a system recovery, I was able to install Limewire, but my wireless drivers stopped working. Did another system recovery, and something else broke.

Why can't companies just ship a Windows CD???

Anyway, thanks all, we now have an answer to this question in case someone else stumbles across the same problem.

limewire not working

ok so i've had limewire for a while... and every once in a while, i try to open limewire to do some downloading and a message comes up saying "limewire was unable to load, please download and install again." and so i downloaded it again and usually it works... but this time it's not working at all... i tried using the backup downloading program too... but it still didn't work... and so i tried completely uninstalling the program and starting over from scratch but it STILL isn't working... can any one help me? i don't wanna have to pay for this thing to get it to work... :bangh:

getwet55 October 26th, 2006 12:50 AM

I don't know if I'm in the right place but can anyone help I downloaded Limwire with no problems and enjoyed using it (for the two days I got to use it) I was very proud that I downloaded it myself being a computer idiot! anyway my husband deleted the desktop icons and I don't know what else. I did a search for limewire and found the rest of the files and tried to open it from there, no luck. Went to add/remove programs - nothing their either and nothing under "programs" either. I deleted what i could and tried to start again and it keeps saying i'm running it in my systems tray (where is that?) it proceeds to tell me to right click on the icon and click "exit" *sigh* I don't get the option to exit! So now I can't run limewire and can't un-install it and can't download! Any ideas?? Remember i'm not computer literate. It took me 20 mins just to figure out how to work this thread thing!

Maybe i'm missing something really really dumb but... sorry this is killing me.

I went to use the old version of Limewire and got a message that the program/file was corrupt and to reinstall the software.
So I did and received the same message as the one quoted above.
I read all the posts in this thread and I have tried several of the suggestions but nothing has worked.
I deleted and reinstalled Java and Limewire as suggested previously but still no luck, just the darn message.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

birdy November 6th, 2006 07:45 PM

So you're not getting the corrupted installation message anymore but you're getting the 'save folder not valid' message?

Try deleting LW's preferences folder. Just make sure that LW's properly closed first. See points 2 & 3 in the thread below
Fixes for LimeWire

burnsbru November 7th, 2006 12:04 AM

Thanks Birdy I will give it a try.
The corrupt message came up as I went to use the previous version that I had been using for some time. Additionally the message directed me to reinstall Limewire.
After I installed the newer version I received the "save folder is not valid or may have been deleted..." as well as a "fatal error/corrupt installation" message.

birdy November 7th, 2006 12:11 AM

If you were using quite an old version before, just check the location of your preferences folder...you could have an older .limewire folder or the newer one within Application Data, check for both.

2. Delete the LW Preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed! & found here: Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire OR
/your_username/.limewire OR

Thanks Birdy :Smilywais: I revisited the thread link you provided and deleted the Limewire preferences folder in the C:/Documents And Settings file as instructed.
That did the trick. :yahoo:
My mistake was that I assumed (we all know what they say about assuming) that since I had uninstalled the previous Limewire installations that everything was gone. W R O N G! :nono:

Birdy, thank you again. Your assistence and direction is greatly appreciated.

Attempting download

I can't install the normal way, so I'm trying the offline download... Is it supposed to take an excrutiatingly long time with out having any noticable change in progress?

gradesteepens November 27th, 2006 01:39 PM

I installed PRO on my wife's computer but when i get to the download page, it sends me to a search engine web site. How do I fix this?

jr watkins November 30th, 2006 08:12 PM

why is none of the instalers working

foolofthehill November 30th, 2006 08:38 PM

Did you try to install using the offline installer?? Also, what about your Java installation? Did you update it prior to the LW installation??

Uninstall all Java versions on your system. Reboot and then download the JRE offline installer of the newest Java version from here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
Install it and reboot again, then try to install LW.

I havenever had limewire on my computer before, but i can not get past the Uninstallking previous versions of limewire... any suggestions?

Lord of the Rings December 21st, 2006 04:59 AM

Hmm, that's odd. Try force quitting it & reinstall (Control-alt-del & open process manager to do this.) I would recommend the "Offline" version which is 2nd on the download page. That way you're not installing whilst waiting for the files to be sent over the internet. With the offline installer, all necessary files (except Java) are within the installer on your computer. In fact, I would also recommend installing Java offline before you install LW. Get Java here http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp which is about a 15 MB download. And of course, get the offline LW installer from here http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

shtrawberry December 27th, 2006 06:23 PM

Still having trouble...

So I had LimeWire on my old computer but recently got a new one. I tried installing and everything went fine until the last window, where you "finish" and run the program. However, nothing comes up: the program never runs. I read all the faq and lots of the forums. I used internet explorer, not AOL, and when i went to uninstall java or whatever, it's not even a program on my computer.
What should I do?!
Thanks so much!!

birdy December 27th, 2006 06:45 PM

If you don't have Java, LW won't work.
Download the latest JRE offline installer here
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp
Just double check that there's no old Java versions on your comp. If there is, remove it. If there's not then install the JRE.

Now reinstall LW & use the offline installer (not the recommended one)

dadio January 1st, 2007 03:48 PM

i am trying to reinstall limewire on my new computer with windows xp from my old computer with ME but everytime it says i need to have java runtime which i do. i tried downloading different versions of java but it doesnt make any difference

Lord of the Rings January 1st, 2007 04:38 PM

Hmm I've heard of that problem before. Go to add/remove control panel & remove all earlier versions of Java & just leave the latest version. Then reboot. Download the "other" LW installer version & try that. Download ‘Other’ version & simply unzip & use!. If still issues, try the options here Fixes for Limewire

Not sure what you mean from your old computer. If you want to transfer your previous incomplete files, copy the entire incomplete folder from the ME machine & replace the new incomplete folder on the XP machine but ONLY whilst LW is closed & of course after you have successfully installed LW.

Bobcat January 1st, 2007 08:26 PM

Please help! When I try to run LW I get to "loading user interface" then it just disappears - nothing! I've removed Java and LW and reinstalled using offline installer, but still the same problem! I am using an older version of LW (4.5) because when I try to use the newer versions I get a strange box appear under the LW loading screen (nothing recognizable in it). I am using Windows 98, and was able to use this version of LW previously, but it suddenly stopped loading. I was going to delete the .limewire folder as suggested by LOTR, but the post said to "save the information because it will be needed later" - what info. should I save, and where do I use it later? Thanks.

foolofthehill January 1st, 2007 09:18 PM

The info LOTR mention is about your previous LW configuration such as Language, Saved and Sgared folder, etc. Those details you usually apply in the process of a new LW installation. Just go ahead and don't worry about this information.
:Smilywais:

Bobcat January 2nd, 2007 02:51 AM

I still can't get LW to load! As I said, I reinstalled Java with offline installer, then I downloaded the "Other" version of LW and unzipped and installed that (after removing all traces of previous LW from my computer). Now I still have the same problem - LW gets to the "loading user interface" part, then just disappears. My computer is part of a network (mine is not the main computer) - could this be causing a problem? Also, the main computer and mine have Network Magic - could something from the main computer be preventing LW from loading on my computer? Any thoughts or suggestions would VERY appreciated! Thanks.

foolofthehill January 2nd, 2007 03:05 AM

If you paid for LW and got 360Share then you got scammed. Read here:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=28751

Purchase LW only from the official site:

Lime Wire won't run

Hi, I installed Limewire without any error messages but when I click on songs from the list to download, nothing shows up in the box below where it usually tells you something about percentages for the songs. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but itdoesn't run for me. Can anyonehelp? I'm using Windows XP on a laptop. Thanks

I installed, uninstalled, have the latest java, went even into the regedit and removed the extras! I still cannot be get this to work, can someone help me please?:bangh: :(

birdy January 9th, 2007 04:45 PM

What exactly's happening when you try to install? Are you getting any error messages?
The more info you can give us, the better.

sportsnut72 January 9th, 2007 05:22 PM

not installing

It just sits there, "loading" and a pop up with firewall and will not go away. Once you click the red X to get rid of the box the whole thing goes away.

So I sit there, install, go through, hit english, next, Cable, next, start auto (and also tried unchecking), nothing after that, it sits there loading saying that its installing the library.

natural1 February 13th, 2007 05:03 PM

I just downloaded the new version of Limewire, and keep getting the message, Can not connect, possible firewall, check settings. Which I have done. No settings have been changed since I used the old version. I love limewire and want it back! Help

Grandpa February 14th, 2007 07:46 AM

sportsnut72
It sounds like Java is not loading correctly. You need to go to add/remove programs and remove all previous versions of Java then reboot go back and check to see that all previous versions of Java have been removed. Then go to C:/Program Files and delete the Java Folder reboot. Now with that all done download the Java offline installer to your computer once you have the installer downloaded install Java then LimeWire.

natural1
Your Modem/Router may have a firewall in it or your ISP may have started blocking or shaping P2P traffic unfortunately you have not supplied enough details for us to help you. If you could supply more info it would be helpfull.

natural1 February 16th, 2007 06:27 PM

I have reinstalled java, and limewire. Java has been confirmed successful install.
I keep getting the message that a firewall is blocking limewire. I have been using limewire since Jan. 2006, it was only when I upgradied to the new version that I began getting this message. I used the old version in the morning, and installed the updated version the same evening. I do not believe any settings were changed with me ISP provider in that time frame.
?????

Grandpa February 16th, 2007 07:08 PM

When you installed the new version did your firewall ask if you wanted to grant permission for LimeWire to access the INTERNET. If it did not you will have to add LimeWire to you allow list. If it is already in your allow list remove it from the list then add it again.

Sleepy2000 March 4th, 2007 11:38 AM

No Luck!!

The only thing that happens repeatedly is, a Java window opens after the LW loadup screen starts. The screen says:
"One or more necessary files appear to be invalid.
This is generally caused by a corrupted installation.
Please try downloading and installing LimeWire again.
If the problem persists, please visit www.limewire.com
and click the 'Support' link.
Thak You."

etc......

I've tried deleting it and reinstalling it again, but still no luck, and I've also tried your suggestions... they still didn't work.
Even though we are getting the system for free, is it possible for someone specifically a technician from limewire, be able to help us out....

Or is this a form of way to tell us that, it time for us to stop getting freebies and start paying!!

birdy March 4th, 2007 03:04 PM

Sorry, there aren't any LW technicians here:(

Try this:

1. Reinstall Java. Use the JRE offline installer here. Remove your current Java version before you install the new one.
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp

2. Delete LW's preferences folder when LW is properly closed. See points 2 & 3 below. If you've only used very recent versions of LW then the folder will be in point 3's location. If you've used much older versions in the past, there could be a folder in both locations.
Fixes for LimeWire
Deleting this folder will kill all of your settings within options...you'll have to go back thru & reset your options afterwards.

3. Now reinstall LW & make sure to use the offline installer (not the recommended one).
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

A corrupted installation is a corrupted installation...whether you have Pro or basic.

Now, nothing works!

PLUS the logo stays on my screen.
I have to reboot my computer to get the logo off.
I contacted LW, via email 3 times and I called 212-219-6050.....NO replies.
Anyone have an answer to why my LW does not work?
Thanks.

I have tried everything in order to get lw to open and run and nothing has happened. I have uninstalled and reinstalled lw several times along with java. I have also tried the back-up installer with no luck. When i click on the lw icon the start-up screen pops up and stays in the middle of the screen and the only way to get it off is to restart. I get the firewall screen asking me to allow access and as soon as i do nothing. I've read everything on this forum followed all directions and still nothing. I've had lw for about 1 year with no problems, bought the new version of pro and thats when it all started. If anyone has an idea please let me know.

Bogus site?
That's the first time I heard that.
You have a link to the real site?
Also, I called my bank and told them that I'm disputing the $14.50 charge ( just on principle) and they are going to reverse the charge.

This version of the installation finally worked for me, but just as I was finishing the installation, a window popped up and said that I would have to download Java myself for LimeWire to work, because it couldn't make it install itself. I went to the Java website and attempted to download it but then an error message popped up which said : "The installation cannot proceed with the current Internet Connection proxy settings." (Sorry this is getting so long) Then I went to try and find the proxy settings..and according to the website, my computer doesn't use a proxy server! I didn't think this would stop the LimeWire program, so I came here to see if anyone could help. Again, sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!

Limewire Install

Margret I can only say that the whole Limewire install is a "Dud" unless you are VERY VERY Careful and NEVER Click on "INSTALL PRO" at the start of the installation! Somehow when you click to install you are onto a Dud Site and they take your money but no Limewire They don't answer the 1800 number and there is no way of contacting them, My advice is to forget it, or sift thru this forum and you will find a "link" that LM Cnutella" has posted I think because of us all complaining? click on it" and it will install the correct LW (it did for me) but I am still $50 out of pocket, Good Luck Dasha:idea: :bangh:
