If you still have problems connecting (after trying for a few minutes), you might want to try getting a valid gnutella.net file from someone. The gwebcaches that are out there right now are in really bad shape. If you hit a bunch of bad ones on startup (assuming you have not been on the network recently), then you may not get connected. |
I have windows XP, limewire 4.0.8, windows firewall and a 10mbps LAN connection (i don't know if that's DSL\T1\T3) but limewire just won't connect. When I lived at home with my parents, limewire worked fine under the same circumstances but on a cable connection. My girlfriend has the same as me now...same versions of windows and limewire, same firewall, same sort of connection...even the exact same computer and limewire is 100% functional. I've followed the "can't connect?" instructions on the limewire web page about opening ports and stuff but that didn't help. Neitherdid deleting whatever it said at the start of this thread. It's really frustrating and if anyone can help I'd be really grateful. |
jethro, You have tried turning off the XP firewall haven't you? What version of Java are you running? Norm |
HELP I had no problems connecting yesterday and now all of a sudden I cant connect at all....what can I do???? |
Quote:
Yeah I tried that but it didn't work. It's Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition Version 1.4.2 |
My friend jethro: it seems to me that you are trying to connect from either a university network, or a work network. Am I right? If I am, then chances are that the people at the University/work people don't want people using p2p apps, so they block them using firewalls. |
I thought it might be something like that, murasame:-\ It's a uni halls of residence network. That's incredibly annoying. Oh well...thatnks for the help. |
Waitwaitwait! Before giving up, a good idea is to talk to other students and maybe even the IT department (if you don't think that they have a problem with it) to see if there are other apps that work. If there are, either use the ports that they use on LW, or just switch. If you choose the IT dep alternative, ask them for open ports and use them on LW. |
Comcast and Limewire? I've formatted my computer and completely reinstalled LimeWire. I've tried also deleting the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\.limewire But I still can't connect. Anyone know if Comcast Cable Provider has blocked Gnutella/LimeWire? Windows Firewall is Off. Kerio Firewall is Uninstalled, Norton's Disabled.... Still can't connect. Don't even get a list of servers its trying to connect to...... Any Suggestions? All other p2p programs I've found suck. |
Ask your isp what their policy is on p2p use. Really do it. I'll reword that, ask them if they block any p2p use. Also: When LW is open, click Tools->Options & go to Bug report & click for an example. In the window that appears scroll down to the part that says: "Recieved incoming this session". If it says ‘True’ then LW has no problem with firewalls, but if 'False' it does have a prob. Do this test first before contacting your isp. You may need to ask them about how to open a particular port for LW. Are you using adsl/able/other? |
where is this limewire prefrences you talk about because i have been trying forever and it dont work |
somebody please please please please please help me out |
i have a gateway and XP and i have tried every freaking thing you guys have can somebody tell me what to try |
You said that you don't know where the preferences is. Have you found it? If no, then you haven't done everything that people have suggested. Go read the beggining of the thread. |
Can someone PLEASE give me instructions for Windows ME...Like a previous user has already said, the only instructions i've found have been for windows XP only....I have a LAN connection, and have been able to connect twice at random times...but other than that I have had no luck. I've tried all the suggestions, but there seems to be a lack of suggestions for Windows Millenium. By the way, with milenium, there is no folder like u said in order to delete the preferences. Can someone please post a useful reply...thanks in advance |
Have you tried running a Windows search for "Limewire"? Two folders should pop up. One should contain limewire.exe (or whatever). The other should be the LW prefs. |
LW Prefs are/should be in a folder called '.limewire' note the dot in front. For me they're in Documents and Settings/User Name. Correct me anybody if I'm wrong here. They could be elsewhere for other people. |
LOTR, That's where I find them too. Did you give up the Mac? It sounds like you are using XP. Norm |
Retired from mac now using pc. Reborn lotr. Norm you're the 2nd person to ask me that question in the past 5 mins. lol Actually I'm using win 2k on a G4 using virtual pc. Slow as hell. |
OK, please bear with me if I don't have all the info you need as I am on a Mac and know nothing about them. I am running OSX 10.1.5 with LW 4.0.8 on a cable connection (Roadrunner). The last time I used LW it ran fine (Saturday) and today it won't connect. It would say "connecting" but never go anywhere. Interestingly, someone was able to connect to me and start d/l a file but I was not able to do any searching etc. I deleted the prefs file per the instructions in the forum and when I restarted LW it simply said "disconnected" and clicking the connect button did nothing. I went to bug report and couldn't find anything about "incoming this session" but the "Ever accept incoming" was true. I started the Classic environment and ran LW 4.0.7, with the same problem (I was thinking maybe it was the upgrade). In this version, the error report does say "incoming this session" and it is false. I read that OSX has a native firewall, but I went to Prefs->sharing and did not see a firewall tab. If OSX has a firewall built in, how do I find it to see if it is on, and why would it suddenly start blocking LW when it hasn't in the past? If the file that is used to store connection information has gone 'bad' (as one post mentioned), and I can't connect, how do I get a 'good' file? I couldn't find one on the LW site but I may have missed it. Hopefully I can sort this out. It seems a lot of people are suddenly having this issue ... makes me wonder:confused: |

Check your Sys Prefs, Softw Update app & see if there's any java updates compatible with 10.1.5. For OSX I'd suggest it's rare for the dwnld prefs to become corrupted. Do a general maintenance run for your comp. Do a SAFE restart, & use Disk Utility to fix things. Alternatively, use the mac osx startup disk & choose disk utility & check your comp all over including repairing all permissions. See these threads (click on links): http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...6094#post96094 (permissions) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...3462#post93462 If you have 3rd party utilities, it never hurts to give your system a run over (eg: Norton, DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, etc.) but make sure they're update for OSX 1.5 (that's very important!) |
I rebooted & ran disk utility and found no errors. I reinstalled LW and it still wouldn't connect. I rebooted again to Classic OS 9.2 and ran LW 4.0.7 and lo & behold, it connected fine! I'm going to go back to OS X in a bit to see if 4.0.8 will run under it now. The computer does have a problem with its clock and when I use the apple server under OSX to set the time, it sets it to 1936. Maybe that's causing a problem somewhere. A bit of a pain to have to run 9.2, but at least LW is working right! |

university proxy help I'm behind university proxy and could not connect at first to gnuttela network with Bearshare so I switched to LW but same problem stayed. Than I tried with force IP option and it worked! Hope this will help someone :) |
Well, I've tried everything I could find and nothing has worked. Looks like its time to uninstall Limewire and go back to Kazaa. It was nice while it lasted. |
ive also tried everything.my firewall is off and it still wont connnect??port 6346 is allowed to connect and it wont work.i delete the LM file as it was explained in the beginning of this thread and it didnt work.i deleted the tip of the day and the auto start option and it did not work nothin works messin with the computer made it worse.it use to stay at poor connection now it wont connect at all.help!!!!!!!!!! i really dont want to use kazaa |
flippfloppin, where are you trying to connect from (home, university, work....)? |
4.0.8 XP Pro 100.0 mbps ethernet (unsure if that's T1 or T3) Problem that just started today, seemingly the same problem a lot of people are having: I can't connect, no matter what I do. It says "Connecting...", holds there, then says "Disconnected". I've read through the forum and tried out the suggestions. - I deleted the preferences folder. Nothing. - I ran a bug report. It said false. This is even though I don't have a firewall on. - I downloaded the latest version of Java, just in case. I don't know whether or not I have SP2. - I uninstalled and reinstalled it about 7 times. Nothing. - I added 6346 in the firewall list, even though I didn't have a firewall on. So I tried it with the firewall on, still didn't work. Turned it back off, still nothing. I live on a college campus, but don't believe P2P is firewalled, since my roommate is using Limewire as I speak. Also, I downloaded Ares, Phex, and WinMX... those don't connect either, but Soulseek does and downloads at its usual slow pace. Any help? |
Go check your buddy's Options and see (in the Advanced section) what port he's using for LW. If it's a different port, use that in your own LW. |
Did that, he's also using 6346. I also tried the Force IP option, that didn't work either. I don't know what else to try. |
Try copying your friend's preferences to your own comp. Prefs are in a folder called .limewire, so replace yours with his. |
poor connection problems I run xp with sp2 on a p4 2gig with outpost firewall(no windows firewall) on a 2.3mb dsl connection. I too had problems connecting first of all you must go into the folder that you use to log on(ie not all users) you must also ensure you are viewing the correct limewire folder(i deleted and re-installed several times trying to make it work) if need be use the search programme to check for existing copies of limewire. also ensure that limewire is not on the taskbar delete the said folder and restart limewire this fix works |
Worked for me just fine! THANKS Windows XP Home.. |
how how do you get to the limewire preferences, i have xp. how do i get to the directory c:\documents and settings.... |
Not being an XP user I can only suggest this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=29243 Alternatively do a search for limewire on your comp. |
I'm now totally confused. After my last post I switched back to OSX and LW ran fine. I've done nothing to the computer since then, no installs, nothing, and now I'm right back where I was with the eternal "connecting" problem. What can possibly be causing this bizarre behavior? |
connection problems preferences for xp users easiest way to find your limewire directory is to use the search function from the start menu. delete all limewire directories and ensure limewire is closed on the task bar. additional note; ive had other problems with my dsl connection of late, which may have a bearing on the above connection problems. I had xp update on automatic, and believe this was compromising my bandwidth. I have since turned automatic updates off, and so far no problems. mac/os users; i cant really comment as ive never used the mac/os systems, but i would have thought the method would be roughly the same. hope this helps you all |
Help me force Ip Im behind a university proxy and i need help forcing the ip Keep it to one thread won't you! Otherwise we'll ignore you. Also read this thread & search your topic. Sorry lord of the rings i deleted my first thread |
This may sound a bit dense but I've forgotten my username for LimeWire - does anyone know how I can find it out? |
Your username? For the Limewire forums? ... Didn't you just use it to post? Limewire (the application) doesn't use usernames yet and if you're talking about the email adress you used when dlding Pro (if you got Pro, that is), then I suggest you just try out every email adress you have. |
OSX user...can't connect worth anything! :'( Hey all...I've been reading the possible fixes for the connect probs and I have tried them all and nothing! I'm so frustrated! I'm using mac OSX version 10.3.5 I can open it and it has the lil green bar that constantly says 'connecting' occassionaly it will go up to 'poor' for like a second then back down to 'connecting' although obviously i never can do anything. I've tried deleting preferences, unchecking tips, etc. etc. and gone into system prefs making sure the port was available thruogh the firewall. I dunno...I need some serious help! If anyone knowing bout this prob. on mac osx could shed some light on this i'd greatly appreciate it!!! thanks! |
lost... a little lost, i've got all these limewireOSX.zip folders on my mac's destop. i also have an incomplete folder w/ downloads.dat file in it; also there's a limewireOSX.zip.sit.si file on my desktop, the forums are a little confusing, i also put my credit card # in thinking that i was paying for 2 yrs of limewire when my friend told me it's free, i've been reading for past hour; just can't get it to work, what does gnutella mean anyway? |
If you paid for 2 years then you've been scammed. See: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28751 There's only one place you should have got your LW from & that's http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml The pro version costs $18.88 & offers 6 mths of free updates to the pro version & customer support. There's no dramatic differences b/w the pro & standard free version. There's no reminder to upgrade to pro when you open LW & there's some other minor improvements in the pro version. Traditionally the pro version enabled you to be able to connect to more ultrapeers & have better connection quality than standard LW. Gnutella is the name of the p2p network. I don't know why the heck you have zip files. That is not ordinary. Where did you get them? The incomplete folder will have 2 files called downloads.dat & downloads.bak. These 2 files contain your dwnld history & records of your incomplete dwnlds. Leave these files as they are. Once a file has completed dwnlding (100%), LW will 'move' it from the incomplete folder to your LW Dwnld folder (See LW's Prefs-Saving to know where the LW dwnld folder is.) So what is your LW version & which OSX version do you have? Have you updated your java? If you have a problem, please specify in detail what happens from the moment you click to open LW. Also supply as many details as possible about your comp configuration. |
oh please help I too have tried all suggestions and have as of 10-25 reformatted for other reasons. After setting up anew I downloaded LW, installed (it gave me the latest Java) and now, after trying all suggestions am stumped. After starting LW, it just sits and tries to connect. Occasionally I am graced w/a "poor", but that much like my dreams and aspirations is fleeting.. |
Oops! I sit and view the connections and watch it scroll through hundreds if not thousands of IPs...tried to force, but it doesn't connect...this is insane!!!!! |
Limewirepro had worked great for me until I reformatted my pc, I went from xp home with sp1 to xp pro with sp2. At this point getting limewire to connect has been more like pulling teeth than using a program. I have tried every suggestion I have ran across on this forum and nothing seemed to work for connecting. Sometimes by random chance like maybe one out of 50 tries it connects to at least fair. I am curious if a netgear router could be part of the problem but I was using the same router before I reformatted. I also just tried telling limewire that I had a modem instead of dsl (even though I have dsl) and it has connected to turbo charged after a few minutes, this might be one of those random times but I am not disconnecting just yet to check. |
your "quick" fix did NOT work... |
For those of you who are having difficulty connecting do this: When LW is open, click Tools->Options & go to Bug report & click for an example. In the window that appears scroll down to the part that says: "Recieved incoming this session" (about half way down the report.) If it says ‘True’ then LW has no problem with firewalls, but if 'False' it does have a prob. If you're using Mac OSX then go to LW's Prefs-Bug Report, & for OS9 that's Options-Bug Report. If you have a firewall/router blocking your connection, you'll need to open a port. For the most common firewalls, instructions can be found at the bottom of the following page: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml |
Connection Problems still no joy. have to give up i'm afraid. |
