Thanks sdaswani, the fix worked great!

skeeter7298 December 23rd, 2007 05:47 AM

not seeing what u r sayin

i am tryin to follow ur instructions. i have vista and i see 3 limewire folders on my c:/. LimewireSAVED, SHARED and STORE PURCHASE.

Do I delete all of these? I do not see .limewire

Skula December 23rd, 2007 08:19 AM

I tried it and it worked 100%, you click on documents and setting then you will see multiple folders. Click on the folder that is entitled "OWNER", you will then see a few more folders this time. Here you should see a folder that is entitled ".limewire", click on that and it should direct you to the files you must delete in-order to gain the proper operation of Limewire. I don't remember which files i deleted exactly sorry.

Good Luck.

You might not have a preferences folder named .limewire...also look for a folder named LimeWire. Check out the thread below for info about how to find your prefs folder in Vista:)

For those who are having trouble connection to the Gnutella network using LimeWire, we have a potential fix. You need to delete your WHOLE LimeWire preferences directory. The directory can be found in the following locations:

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

Thanks!

http://minasbeis.tripod.com/gnutella.zip

and unzip it

2.go to directory
C:\Documents And Settings\username\Application Data\LimeWire
(where username is the name you use to login to your PC) and replace the existing file gnutela.net with that

3.restart limewire.

I'm glad to see that the technique is working for some users. Though it is very surprising that the fix is not as general purpose as I thought it would be.

Thanks IT WORKED!!!

You must show all hidden files like so:-

[1] Open windows explorer:-
select Tools à Folder Options à View à Show hidden files and folders.
[2] In windows explorer look for the Limewire Folder – go here:-
c:\documents and settings\username\applications data\LimeWire
(or)
c:\documents and settings\username\limewire
[3] Ensure that limewire is completely off - (check system tray-bottom right-if the
LW icon is still there-right click select exit)

now open the .limewire folder and look for and delete the gnutella.net file

http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/LW_g...1196869679.jpg

[4] Now download a new version of gnutella.net and save it to your desktop -
[5] Drag the new gnutella.net file from your desktop into the limewire folder.
[6] Close the LW Folder and start up Limewire
Hope this helps-please let us know

ISP problem

I have read through all of the connection threads and have not seen anyone who is using Vista that has fixed a connection issue. I have eliminated my router and connected directly, shut off Windows firewall, removed Norton, updated Java and I can still not connect. I downloaded the most recent version of Limewire basic. I looked for the gnutella.net file(with hidden files shown)and do not see it to replace? I connect at my sister's house through her ISP and have no issues. Any suggestions on how to get through w/o changing ISPs?

That's ok just download a new gnutella.net file and drag it into your
Limewire Folder (see my thread addressed to junkie and follow the
same steps)

let us know if this works please

connection failure

Every thing I have tried to download sends the connection status as "connecting" then "waiting for stable connection"... Now it is locked up completely... my problems started when I "upgraded" to limewire PRO...
I am furious, I want my money back! Don't go PRO!!!!
Is there any real customer support, someone in limewire I can 'chat' with?
Where do I go from here?

For Those who can't connect

Hi,

I have been reading all the information for the past few days and also trying many of the suggestions. So far, I have not been able to connect to limewire.

Operating system is Windows XP version 5.1.2600 Service pak 2 build 2600
Version of Limewire 4.15 Beta(recently downloaded)
Connection DSL
My ISP is Cox
My security suite is Windows onecare
I am in the San Diego, CA area

I have had Limewire for many years. I recently changed ISP's (cox) then changed back to (Cox) and that is when the problem began. I have lost all of my files and had to redownload LW. The error message I am receiving is:

Limewire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program that is blocking LW access to the internet or loopback connections to the local machine. Please allow LW access to the internet and restart.

I have removed all Firewalls to ensure the connection but still did not connect. I have also contacted Cox several days ago about the matter and they seem to be ignoring this issue. I have spent many days and nights trying to do everything that has been suggested, still willing to try more suggestions. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you,

Awynterstorm

have alook at this link (LimeWire Pref Folders in Vista) - then go to this link (If Lw will not Connect) read through these working aids/guides as they will help you to re-connect -- they are provided by some very clever people who help out on this forum - if yr problem still persists post yr system details here

Why should we have to fix these things in our LW programs. Is this not the job of the Software Developers. I am an avid programmer and this program really isn't the best designed program out there. I don't mean to bash LW. But c'mon. I recently upgraded to the Pro package($40.00) 2 weeks ago. Since then and downloading the new version I have been unable to connect...Not very happy. I have tried everything possible on these Forums and I still have nothing. BareShare and Morpheous connect up, search, and download for me. But they want a license(BareShare), or redirect me to a site(Morphous). I've been using LW for a really long time. I would really hate to get rid of it. Oh by the way I did this delete .limewire. and it didnt work. Don't ask if I had it running in the system's tray... I am not retarded. Here's the fix were all gonna have to start paying to download from iTunes.

Flyfisheron January 9th, 2008 01:03 PM

Hail skyliner....FINALLY a solution!! Have tried everything under the sun. Replacing the gnutella.net file worked.

I'm on Limewire Pro and all of a sudden I can't connect. All I get is the message "starting connection". I've tried deleting the .limewire file from my C drive and I've upgraded Java from 6 to 7 but 6 was working fine until 8/1/08. Somebody help me!

My Limewire Is Stubborn

So i have:
  • Windows XP (home edition)
  • I have regular Windows Security...but my dad installed MacAfee onto it, and i just uninstalled it.
  • Ram i have lots of
  • Disk space i have: 108,943K free
  • Connection Type is: NetGear Wireless...but the rest of my family has cable and together we have WOWWAY
  • I go tno idea what my router number/name is
  • My limewire is on my home computer at my house.
  • i have the 4.16 LImewire and the 6.3 Java (or somethin like that)
  • My ISP is probably either Wowway
  • My test says it works.
  • My wireless is connected to a NetGear in the basement which together is shared by all computers...but im the only one w/ wireless.
  • Ive been using Limewire for a long long time. My computer crashed so i had to restart it and then i downloaded Limewire again. But this time it wont connect at all.
  • There is a brick wall infront of the globe, but i turned off my limewire and i added limewire to the exceptions...along with adding the incoming and outgoing ports.
  • I do have UPnP enabled.
  • MacAfee is my security and yes i have antivirus.
  • Im from the good old USA...michigan
But yeah all the solutions i have done which i saw has still not changed my service...and im not getting anything.

have a look at #1388 of this thread (delete/replace gnutella.net file) and try this -- it's worked for some people -- otherwise read the sticky threads at the top of page 1 and work yr way through these fixes - if problem persists pse post yr system details here

Read the sticky threads at the top of page 1 (If LW will not connect) (connection problems) and work yr way through these fixes -- 95 % of the known problems/fixes are in here the other 5% are to do with yr firewall/router settings hence we need to know yr system details
