thank you lord of the rings i'm working on the port forwarding right now....i probably wont be able to tell you until a little later... |
still cannot connect . . . or disconnect! Still not working. My subject line is not exactly correct, though. I CAN "connect," according to the File menu. However, no searches work due to "not (being) connected to the network." The only way for me to disconnect is to use ctrl-alt-del. Please advise. (I've already deleted the file I was advised to delete.) Thanks~ P.S. Using XP Home. New computer. Cable modem. |
Hi tamicee: You will need to do a number of things for me. 1. Uninstall LW using your Add/Remove control panel. 2. Update your installshield install engine. 2. Update your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link) 3. Try dwnlding & installing LW again. There is a new version just released today (LW 4.2.4) & choose the english version HERE! LW 4.2.4 (click on link) Questions: 1. Can you tell me all the firewalls you have? You will need to configure them to allow LW access. See instructions here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml 2. Can you tell me what modem & if any router you use: What's the brand name & model number? 3. Advice: Do NOT install SP2 (Windows XP Service Pack 2) b/c it's only intended for big companies with major networks not for home users. SP2 can reduce your connectivity to the net. And you don't need it! It would only cause you headaches! |
Nixie, do you have several copies of LW on different comps or just one copy? (I figure it's the latest) |
Downloads I dont think we have downloaded any new software which may cause a problem. I already have the Java update. We do have a router - I couldnt find the make but the model is ASR 8100. Its an ADSL router. We used to all be able to connect to Limewire Pro but now nobody can and it stopped connecting people at different stages. I was the last one who was able to connect now i cant. Any ideas? Nikki |
Programs We all have different programs. I have an older version - 4.0.8. The others I think have new. Thats why I find it so odd that we all can not conect as Ive been using mine for a while now. Also I have not downloaded SP2. Nikki |
Nixie155: Your Router does use NAT which can block many ports. I don't have specific instructions though how to allow LW access by using port forwarding. I did find this however: http://www.adsltech.com/faq/ 2/3 way down the page it discusses about setting up a static ip which yo need for port forwarding & further down a bit is about forwarding a range of ports. All you need to do is forward a single port: 6346 & if necessary add the application name (some routers have that option.) Then you can force ip within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image Doing these things will clear a way for LW. Do you use your modem in ethernet or USB connection. Wisest is ethernet. It's not only faster but many USB routers suffer 2 problems: 1.obtain power from comp. 2. utilise comp's processing power thus draining your comp of 'some' speed. |
question about the port forward it wont let any hackers or viruses come through will it? will my computer be more vulnerable? |
Hackers go for the lower port no.'s according to what I've read. There's particular favourites of theirs. It could take me some time to find the article to show you. Keep your firewalls up, keep your antispy & adaware apps going. If you need any links to any just say. I have never heard of LW users being targeted. And they'd need to find the right port anyway. There's how many hundred thousand ports for them to try. Whatever. I believe you'll be safe. You have a nat router to keep them out. Some nat routers actually allow you to specify the particular app that's allowed to pass; much like a firewall. |
Thanks worked a treat |
