Ok...

Win XP Home SP2 FIREWALL OFF
Dell 4300
NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX Graphics
Soundbaster Audigy 2 ZS Pro
Pentium 4 1.7 gHz
256 MB RAM
Linksys 54G USB WiFi adapter, connecting through a BT Voyager 2000 access point (Firewall Off)
Sygate Personal Firewall

Java (latest version from Sun website)
LimeWire 4.9.37

My limewire (or any other P2P program - azureus, WinMX) just won't connect. It's not the router, since i've connected through it in the past, but I was forced to rebuild my PC after a critical driver error - it's fine now. The error's something in my PC but I have no idea what. Sygate is configured to allow uPnP and all Limewire traffic is allowed. It just won't connect.

I've done the test on port 6436 (www3.limewire.com:6436) and it works fine. I don't know what's going on. Please help, i'm getting a new iPod with video and want to be able to get content (video and music) for it. Anyone who solves the problem i'll love forever.

Thanks,
Jamie

[EDIT:] If anyone is willing, and feels that they could sort the problem faster through talking, my MSN messenger address is jamie{AT}thesimpleapproach.co.uk. Thanks =).

Well I hope it's not your isp that's causing the problem. A no. of european internet service providers (isp) are now filtering/blocking p2p programs. They use special p2p program detectors.

Let's try a couple of other tests. You'll need to have LW open at the same time as you do these tests.
1. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www.grc.com/port_6346.htm (Press Probe this port button) Does it say open or closed?
2. http://koti.mbnet.fi/gfactory/ctest/
3. http://jlh.no-ip.org/connectiontest/

I have a suspicion you may get an error with either tcp or udp. That's not necessarily a problem but might be as these specific tests can be affected by firewalls & NAT. My thoughts are that the incoming might be blocked. (Reasons for keeping LW open whilst you do these tests are (a) Linksys opens the particular port for LW via UPnP, (b) Something about these tests that needs the program to be trying to access the particular port before the test works properly. duh

Try connecting with UP turned off. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Speed & tick disable Ultrapeer capabilities & press apply.

My 1st thought is, try another port (even though 6346 is open, this port might be filtered by your isp for p2p.) You may need to adjust your port settings in your firewall. For LW, go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port to one of the following. You may or may not need to relaunch LW for it to take effect I'm not sure. 80, 64049, 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 10000, 15189, 20282, 22817, 443, 34599, 40475.

It's not my ISP (PlusNet UK)- a friend is on them and has no issues. Would my USB wifi adapter have any issues with uPnP? NB my router's firewall is unused.

Connection tests:
1)Shields UP! - Stealth
2) Finnish site - broken link (404 error)
3) Shareza test - TCP timeout, UDP no response

I think i've got the problem, though how i solve it i have no idea. I've been playing around with settings in Sygate (with a guide from the Shareza Wiki) but nothing seems to work. Even without any firewalls on Limewire sticks at the first green bar. I've run a Spybot S&D and a full AVG scan.

UP is disabled.

I'll try your afterthought (the PM), if you think it's worthwhile, but i can't see it making a difference. After all it's not just limewire, it's Azureus too.

Cheers for the help,
Jamie

What do you mean the Voyager firewall is off? It uses NAT, but is also supposed to support UPnP. http://www.voyager.bt.com/2000/tech_spec.htm But unfortunately not all UPnP devices work properly. I'm guessing the issue is either the Linksys or the Voyager.
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...q3/bt-2000.asp start about 60% way down the page about port forwarding. Also see UPnP discussion & issues about 80-90% down the page. This might be your problem. See if it applies or not.

If you need to actually manually port forward after all, I don't have specific instructions for this model but there's one for the BT Voyager 2100 here: http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm

If you do do manual port forwarding, then at the end of the process do this within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

CONNECTION PROBLEMS - SOLUTION FOR THOSE USING ROUTERS!!!!

Chances are, if you access the internet via a router, you will have connection problems.

Basically, you need to do 2 things.

1) Make sure that your PC is set up with a Static IP addess as opposed to obtaining one automatically.

2) Configure the Virtual Server in your Router to enable port 6346 (both UDP and TCP).

To do these 2 things;

1) Go here
http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm

2)Go Here
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm

Once you have found your Router it will take you to a page that will help you set up any application that requires port forwarding - You will find Limewire conveniently located under the section entitled 'L'

Good Luck

Re: Router suggestions

My router's fine. I guarantee. P2P worked before i rebuilt my PC, and now doesn't.

3 questions:
1)Can i get a simple list of all active firewalls?
2)Is there a windows service/component that I need for P2P to work?
3)Would my USB WiFi adapter's software (Linksys WUSB54G) block any specific traffic?

Thanks,
Jamie
