Phex looks different & uses different code. But it's a fine gnutella program. Not as easy to learn when you first look at it. But it has a number of advantages LW does not have.
As for Java, I think you're referring to the re-install the JRE 5.11 offline version Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

Fixes for Limewire when LW isn't operating as it should

adasha lyrai October 6th, 2007 10:37 AM

well, i deleted my java but for some reason, when i tried to download the new version it kept failing! So after that my internet wouldnt work coz i dunno why. I managed to get it going again after i downloaded the old java after going to search- java- then clicking on my old java. It was wierd coz i wasnt expecting to see it there as i had uninstalled it. Im confused and frustrated at limewire! if i remove all trace of limewire then reinstall it will it work?? I know ive already asked you this but youve never given me a straight answer.
adasha

Lord of the Rings October 6th, 2007 10:43 AM

If you uninstall it correctly. Use Start menu -> Programs -> LW -> Uninstall. Then search entire computer to remove any trace. See http://www.gnutellaforums.com/291318-post22.html But still no guarantees. I'd actually recommend creating a test account, & try running LW from there. Of course your firewall will need to be checked to allow LW access.

When installing Java, always choose the "OFFLINE" JRE version to download to your computer. Then install it. Don't use the online installer because that's where lots of problems occur. Same principle applies to LW. ;)

The version of Java recommended for you to try was Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
Also see Fixes for Limewire (click on blue link) & check the options there. :)

Vista...enough said

I dont want to post someting that has already been posted but I don think I can read anymore. I have Vista and ive done everything I can. I can NOT find this mysterious "pref file." I can't even find a documents and settings (i guess its a little diff with vista?) Nothing I do works...nothing. Is it becasue I have zonealarm or is Vista not compatible? Ive had limewire before and Ive never had a problem....but now.....Im thinking of just giving up....

If you cant help me, do you know of another program I could use?

wondering why October 15th, 2007 02:47 AM

lexy1650,
Try this fix first...It sounds a little wierd but it really does work...;)

Success finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!

G4/Mac OS 10.4.9
Limewire Pro would not work, period. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/images...s/ranting2.gif
Solution?
Go to Limewire.com and download the latest standard Limewire.
It works AND I can't notice any difference in speed. This is not Pro, which I have paid for twice, but it works and I'm happy with it. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/images/smilies/cheesy.gif http://www.gnutellaforums.com/images...es/laugh_2.gif http://www.gnutellaforums.com/images...es/mbounce.gif

ZHMMY October 24th, 2007 11:41 AM

I finally had to give up on using "Pro" because it never worked for me on my G4/1ghz/MacOS 10.4.9.

However, I removed all the Pro stuff and downloaded the latest version of the free standard Limewire and it works with no problems!! Seems to work just as fast as well.

Try this -- it fixed my problem and others I have helped on this forum:-

[1] Uninstall the old version of LW before installing the new -- delete the old LW folders from the Programs directory before installing the new version
[2] Ensure that you have java script J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 (Jre ver 5) if not download from here:-

Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

Of course if you haven't got an older version of Limewire loaded just leave para [1] out and do para [2]

please let us know -- Thanx

I am not a first time user and have been using LW for quite some time with no problems. Now I am unable to connect for some reason. Can you help me?

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

Thanks!

I guess this might work if there was such a directory. However, I'm running Vista Ultimate Crap and I can find no such directory. I've tried everything to get Limewire to work and no luck. I even removed my Virus software which was Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite. I contacted ZA about this and they had me do several things, none of which worked. I still cannot connect. So this seems like a Limewire and Vista problem but how do I solve it?

Lord of the Rings November 1st, 2007 08:15 AM

Try this http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

The location for all newer windows users has changed. Vista's location is a tad different again.
Also have a look in the Vista section of the LW section of forums. :)

stratman2617 November 1st, 2007 09:09 AM

Tried what you said. Still don't work. That is, I can't find that directory anywhere. I'm so fed up with this Limewire crap I'm about to pull my hair out. I'm gonna give it one or two more tries and if that don't work Limewire is gone. Oh yeah, I even changed my Virus/Firewall to AVG and I still can't connect.

gungho November 1st, 2007 07:11 PM

To delete the limewire preferences directory, can you tell how to do that, step by step?

birdy November 1st, 2007 07:33 PM

For Win XP:

Deleting the preferences folder will change all of your settings within LW's options (eg download & upload speeds, days to keep incomplete files, location of saved folder, keywords being filtered, listening port etc etc). If you're not sure of what your settings are, go tools > options & write things down before you delete the prefs folder;)

1. Go to Control Panel > folder options > view. Check the radio button to show hidden files & folders > apply > ok.

2. Shut down LW. Make sure it's completely closed by checking in Task Manager (ctrl/alt/del). If there's a LW process running, end the process.

3. Go to My Computer > C drive > Documents and Settings > your username. Look for a folder called .limewire (this is the old location of the prefs folder, so it may or may not exist depending on whether you've used older versions of LW in the past). If there's a folder named .limewire, delete it.

4. Go back to Documents and Settings\your username. Open the Application Data folder & look for a folder named LimeWire (no dot in front of it this time & the name's not all lower case). Delete that folder named LimeWire.

5. Restart LW & go to tools > options...reset the options back to the way you like them:)

There are screenshots & instructions in points 2 & 3 of this thread: Fixes for LimeWire

If you're using Vista, there's a few things that are slightly different...the thread below will help with that.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

Blondini13 November 2nd, 2007 01:23 AM

I cant even find that file, I type in c:/Documents and Settings/username/.limewire and it says it cant be found. I am running Vista.

birdy November 2nd, 2007 01:33 AM

If you've only used newer versions of LW then you won't have a .limewire folder. The prefs location changed in version 4.9.34.

Look at the post above yours, click on the blue link titled "LW prefs folder in Vista". That will show you how to find the preferences folder in Vista.

Blondini13 November 2nd, 2007 01:35 AM

Ok found the file and deleted it. Still no joy. I have limewire pro but thinking maybe i should just download the free version instead. Would anyone recommend doing that??

birdy November 2nd, 2007 01:40 AM

Go to this section: General Vista Support and start a new thread about your problem (this one's so huge & so many people post in it...posts can easily be missed);)

I can't find mine either.

woodztroopz12 November 11th, 2007 04:25 PM

I cant find the prefrences folder could it be named something else?

birdy November 11th, 2007 04:42 PM

You might not have a folder named .limewire...that was the location of the prefs folder in much older versions of LW. The new location is C:\Documents and Settings\your usename\Application Data\LimeWire.

The Application Data folder's hidden by default, so you'll have to show hidden files & folders to ba able to see it.

Try the advice in this thread...there's a bit of info about finding the prefs folder, plus another fix to try if that doesn't work.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-fix-try.html

woodztroopz12 November 11th, 2007 04:44 PM

I found and deleted the folder and it still hasnt fixed the problem yet but i still only have one green conecting bar so maybe i just need to wait?

birdy November 11th, 2007 04:49 PM

Reboot your computer & then give LW 10 minutes to settle down & connect. If it doesn't connect, try the other advice in the thread that I linked to in my post a few minutes ago (post #1288).

cowabunga November 11th, 2007 04:57 PM

pleas help!!!! i jhave installed limewire basic, and i cant seem to get it going! what am i doing wrong?

01queen November 11th, 2007 07:40 PM

deleted the .limewire folder...no help on vista.

larebz November 13th, 2007 03:30 AM

Wow

Amazing to think the answer in the first post of this thread actually worked for me, and that was 4 years ago!! i couldn't connect to Limewire and had tried everything, opening the ports in my firewall etc.

Then to find out that all i had to do is delete the preferences directory is crazy lol the only thing different to the first post is that the 'limewire' folder is located here for me: C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\

Anyway, thanks alot for that :super:

honey.dog.123 November 13th, 2007 04:45 AM

can't connect

i can't find my application folder. i followed your directions but it doesn't seem to be there. i noticed someone else with win xp had no luck either. are there any other solutions. what if i uninstalled lm totally and then reinstalled it.

larebz November 13th, 2007 05:42 AM

dont think that would work but you can try it.

There should be an application data folder somewhere on your computer though. Try turning the "show hidden files and folders" option on and then follow my directions. If that doesn't work do a search of your computer for "Application Data"

Xp.... didn't help

jasonperry04 November 13th, 2007 01:44 PM

Hi, I am using Win XP, I just downloaded version 4.14.10 and now I am unable to connect. It indefinitely shows starting connection with one green bar in the connection status box. I have tried everything and I am still unable to connect. I even tried reinstalling my previous version and it wont connect either. Any suggestions?

Thanks

larebz November 13th, 2007 01:52 PM

i don't see why you people can't just delete the Application Data folder, that's what i did as i just upgraded to the latest version of Limewire and it was doing what you are saying Jason, but then after deleting that folder it works fine now again.

jasonperry04 November 14th, 2007 05:38 AM

I also deleted all the application folders before I upgraded but after upgraded I was no longer able to connect.

theldon November 14th, 2007 11:01 AM

For those who can't find the .Limewire folder, I couldn't find it either so i guessed and deleted any Folders named "Incomplete" in my drive: and Documents folder and started limewire again and it worked, Give that a shot

jasonperry04 November 14th, 2007 12:10 PM

I tried that to, deleting all "incomplete" folders, that didnt work for me. I also uninstalled everything that had to do with LimeWire and went into the registry and deleted all LimeWire keys. Then I ran a virus scan and downloaded LimeWire again and installed it and it still doesnt work. It wont connect at all.

HiramAbiff November 14th, 2007 07:20 PM

I dont know where to find that file to do the delete...HELP!!!
