Hi LOTR
Thanks for the speedy suggestions.
Having failed to connect I did apply port forwarding to the router (taking instructions from this forum).
I didn't manually allocate an IP - as my machine in the only pc on the network - but I have now.
My Java install in the latest - downloaded as part of the natty LimeWire install.
I had configure my firewall but that is now disabled.
I had NOT forced ip within LW but I have now.
I HAVE checked and recheck all settings.
Still no connection. Am I now a lost cause?
Chris

ps I voted LOTR as the best book ever (BBC Radio 4, UK) but that was before I read the Dark Tower sevenology

Lord of the Rings December 20th, 2004 02:15 PM

The problem with LW's installer is that it only installs version 1.3 That's why I ercommended you update to 1.4.2

Make a note of all your LW settings & delete your LW preferences folder called .limewire & found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
Once you delete this folder you'll need to reset your LW options.

Go here & do you get a test page was a success message: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ if yes then your not too badly firewalled.

UkChris December 20th, 2004 02:41 PM

Okay, Java 1.4.2_06 is installed
.LimeWire directory deleted (many times)
Test page loads successfully and has been doing so all day.
Still no connection.
I've had it haven't I?
Chris

Connection fix

I tried the fix of deleting the recommended preferences *.limewire file and it did work once I had eliminated and turned off everythihg else as directed. Thanks. I did have to go through setup again which took no time. I hope this fix is 'permanent' and I don't have to do it every time I turn on from now on!!!

Lord of the Rings December 21st, 2004 04:08 AM

UkChris things can't be too bad if you can reach the test page successfully. It probably means LW is only partially blocked if at all.

Which version of LW did you install? the international or english installer? The international forces LW to use Java 1.3

I'd suggest you double-check your modem's port forwarding. If the ip was dynamic at that time then the port forwarding may have been in vain. Also make sure you save all settings. With some modems you need to re-boot the modem/router after these types of changes. I don't know if that applies to your brand or not.

I suppose you could always try updating to Java 1.5 (take the JRE)

If things still don't work, try an earlier version of LW: http://www9.limewire.com:82/download/

UkChris December 21st, 2004 05:57 AM

Hi LOTR
I have just disabled my wireless network and installed a pstn modem, dialled up and fired up LimeWire - SUCCESS. If seems to me that it is either router (but the test page loads fine) or my ISP and they assure me that they are not limiting anything. Can't think what to do next.
Chris

Lord of the Rings December 21st, 2004 06:14 AM

It sounds like you need to go thru the port forwarding again. 1. Setup static ip 2. Forward the port as in the instructions I gave earlier 3. Force ip within LW

The other possibiliy is SP2, but if you can connect fine on dial up then I don't know about that. SP2 apparently reduces connectivity & resets firewalls back to default. I don't suppose you did the bug report test when you were on dial up. Bug Report instructions & sample image True/False?

Is your router a modem-router or do you have a separate modem? How many comp's are connected?

UkChris December 21st, 2004 06:55 AM

Hi LOTR
Done 1, 2 and 3 again - still no joy.
Dialed up on pstn and performed bug report and it was true, also downloaded a small file ok.
My router is a Draytek 2600VG combined.
Chris

ps Thank you very much for this. I can see from previous posts the you must be used to praise!

edit - Just one pc connected just now.

Lord of the Rings December 21st, 2004 07:33 AM

It's got me bamboozled. Try one of the earlier versions from the link I gave you. But if you've been using LW for a while, I don't recommend going back to too ealy a version. I found that my downld prefs could become corrupt if I did that. But that's only if you have a lot of incomplete files.

UkChris December 21st, 2004 07:44 AM

Thank LOTR
I will try earlier versions but I am not hpoeful. I have just received an e-mail back from Draytek and the suggest puttng my pc into a DMZ - that didn't work either. My ISP have batted the problem off the 2nd line support. I will post and let you know the solution if we find one.
Chris
ps Why didn't Frodo and Sam take the eagle there as well as back - it would have been a lot less trouble :)

et voilą December 21st, 2004 07:53 AM

Salut UkChris, do you have a centrino equipped laptop? I recommend you looking for an updated wireless card driver. The thing stopping you to connect is either the router (usually not likely) or the wireless card. Try to update the firmware of your router also available at your router manufacturer site. I must admit I never heard of a router company named Draytek so their products might be on the poor side too.

Bonne chance

UkChris December 21st, 2004 08:04 AM

Salut et voilą
I will borrow a centrino laptop and see if LimeWire works on that through my router. I bought the (expensive) Draytek router because it was the most recommended in wireless broadband forums. The router firmware is the most recent release.
Merci for your suggestions.
Chris

et voilą December 21st, 2004 08:11 AM

Resalut ChrisUK, no need to borrow a centrino laptop (I guessed you had one, but of course testing with one would help diagnostic the problem). The thing I wanted to tell you is to check if updated drivers were available for your network card on your computer. Also, I saw you can desactivate the firewall on your router, can you test that?

Bonne chance :D

UkChris December 21st, 2004 10:08 AM

LOTR and et voilą

In my oringinal post I gave details of my setup and wrote "My isp (BICSit.net) assures me that they are not filtering anything".

I also copied my forum post to them in an e-mail. They have just informed me that they have been filtering !!!!!!!!!!!

They removed the block after I signed a new term agreement relating specifically to P2P.

Thanks very much for your help and I am very sorry that we have been messed about by BISCit.

As others, I cannot connect

I have emailed for help, mistakenly posted to a new thread, and now hope this gets someones attention. I believe that all the members, and "helpsters" are well intended and I thank you for for advice and help.

I was working just fine until Limeware said there was a new update. So I updated and upgraded. Presto, no connection. Just my opinion but upgrades should not mean you lose service, or compatibility. That is just not right.

I have deleted the preference file, no help. I checked my Norton Security and allowed all connections. I checked Windows Firewall and it was not installed, and I decided not to use it.

I would like to have th choice to uninstall and revert back to the older version that worked.

I finally connected

For all of you WinXP users try doing this and see what happens it worked for me. After reading and trying everything that I read on the forums I finally tried something else. I right clicked on the Limewire icon on the desktop and clicked on Run as. Then it came up showing the current user and then I switched it over to Administrator then Limewire came up and I was able to connect now I am downloading like crazy. Finally after at least about 2 weeks of trying everything the frustration is finally over with. Hope this will help some of you.

What a Legend! December 22nd, 2004 03:56 AM

Ok, but when i want to switch to Admin account it needs a password. The admin on my pc doesn't have a password.

Song Reviewer December 24th, 2004 12:06 PM

Thank You!!!

I was thrown off because my AOL network connection says disconnected. I still downloaded a couple songs before my inablility to connect, too. Overwhelmed at the myriad of possible things gone wrong, I was not looking forward to the miserable task of troubleshooting.

After I put Limewire in the recycle bin from My Documents, BLAM! I'm instantly connected. Whew!

HOT GIRL NEEDS HELP! can't download

I hav just installed limewire and when i tried to search for a song I get this message alert

"limewire is currently connecting to the network. your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network"

I don't get any results at all. How do I fully connect to the network. I have no idea as to how I can do this.

I use windows xp, if that is of any help

kieranoo December 28th, 2004 02:45 PM

can't connect urrrgggghhh motherf......

Hey everyone,

I have tried everything you have to offer and no luck. (Running XP). But I tried Bearshare and it's not working either. So my probs aren't with Limewire. What do I do now? I phoned my ISP and they say 'it's not our fault it should work'.

I guess you take some dynamite to their tender places. Could people offer some suggestions as to what could be causing the problem so I could rule them out one by one. Then how do you tell your ISP they're bullshitting you and they are to sort it out?! Suggestions please

Sorry limewire for doubting you. :)

Hot chick, If you need some help relieving the bordom of not having limewire u can call me anytime, if indeed you are hot... & a chick... ;)

Lord of the Rings December 28th, 2004 03:58 PM

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version (if XP do you have SP2), 2. What firewalls you have, 3. ram, 4. HDD space available, 5. Connection type, 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers, 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

kieranoo December 30th, 2004 03:31 AM

LOTR Reply

Thanks for getting back to me LOTR.

I have Windows XP Pro with SP 2. I have 1Gb of Kingston Hardcore RAM, Gigabyte motherboard, Something like 3Gb free space on primary HD and 77GB on secondary. I use Norton Internet Security 2003 for my personal firewall.

My mate has slightly weaker specs than me but easily capable and we have both been able to use it before and our specs haven't changed. He just uses the modem firewall.

Our modem is a Zoom ADSL, gateway, router & firewall all in one (model 5551) and we have a Belkin Hub (unsure of hub). Our phone line is through BT and our ISP is Biscuit. The ISP is relatively new but we have been connected since changing to them. We run from home so we aren't behind any school networks on a 1mb adsl line.

The two possibilities have to be the modem or the ISP/BT Line. BT have a habit of messing things up so perhaps its them.

Have I left anything out which you think is important?

Song Reviewer December 30th, 2004 04:04 PM

I was unable to completely connect again. The lower left part of limewire just said connecting but never lit up all green.

I right clicked the lime icon on the lower right part of the task bar and clicked exit, then restarted limewire again from the desktop, presto, now I'm turbocharged. I'm on Windows pro.

kieranoo December 31st, 2004 02:59 AM

Thanks Songreviewer, but it really doesn't appear to budge. I am using Limewire 2.4.6 Pro and like you when I load in, the first bar turns green but it never increases up the connection level and then eventually times out after an hour or so.

I'm not sure what you meant, I loaded up, connected, then closed down L/W, closed it in my task bar and then reloaded it from the desktop. Nothing. Thanks for the advise. Any other suggestions, it's been down for a month now all over my holidays and i'm starting to go MAD!

I can't connect either. I have...

Windows XP (not SP2)
No firewall. I did figure out after reading this thread that I have the windows firewall running, but I followed the steps provided to (forgive my poor technical discriptions) let gnutella through.
512MB of Ram.
I believe I have 27.5 free GB of HD space.
I have a cable connection.
I am connecting from home with a Cyber Surf Wave modem provided by my ISP (Shaw Cable Systems) and I am connected through another computer with a Netblaster II wireless router.

I was once upon a time able to use Limewire, but one day lost my connection and never got it back- and like others thought that if I paid for Limewire it would work again to no avail. I have used Kazaa and Edonkey before with no problems. I, like everyone else am experiencing the "connecting" message with 1/5 green bars in the bottom left hand corner of my screen.

I clicked on the link provided by LOTR to see if a firewall was a problem and I loaded the page successfully which tells me my firewall is not a problem.

I followed all the steps correctly (I believe)

I have been
1. Closing Limewire
2.Making sure it is shut down from the system tray
3. Deleting the .limewire folder
4. Running Limewire
5 Changing the options from "Automatically connect..." so that it doesn't....(and clicking apply)
6. closing
7. Restarting from the desktop
8. Hitting my head on my desk. Sometimes my wall.

I am prone to user errors, or as my friends like to say ID10T errors.

One thing I have noticed is that it tells me that it can't run something to do with ITunes, which I don't really care about, but it seems abnormal so I thought I would report it here. If it makes a difference, I will try to get the message again if you need to know the exact details.

I_really_am_Nikki January 4th, 2005 12:11 AM

^here is the ITunes error:

"LimeWire was unable to start the Digital Audio Access Protocal Service (for sharing files in iTunes). This feature will be turned off. You can turn it back on in options, under iTunes.-> Sharing."

Lord of the Rings January 4th, 2005 01:41 AM

Likewise I once went thru a short period of DAAP iTunes errors, but I was using a LW beta at the time.

Unless you're connected to a network you don't need DAAP to be enabled.

Try these things:

1. Repair LimeWire using the Add/Remove Programs utility. Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs & click on Limewire on the Change/Remove button & it comes up with options and one of them is Repair. Try this.

2. Right-clicking the Limewire icon and going to properties and changed compatability setting to Windows 2000.

3. Update your Java version 1.5 (take the JRE)

4. Right-click on the Limewire icon on the desktop and click on Run as. Then it should come up showing the current user and then switch it over to Administrator.

5. Delete the LW Preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed!) & found here: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

6. Try forcing ip: Force IP instructions & sample image

Open LW & let it try to connect for up to an hour. Then do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is it True/False?

willb January 5th, 2005 10:07 AM

Download problem solved

Thanks for your help. I'm using Windows XP had problems downloading after a search, followed your directions and it appears to work now. I was careful to not only close LW but deleted the LW process that was running in background as well. Maybe this is causing some others a problem. Appreciate your support.

Connection Problem

My problem sounds very much like "I really am Nikki's". I open Limewire and it stays at connecting forerver with only the tiny bar turning green. I also get the IPod error. I've tried deleting the preferences, I've enabled my Norton Internet Security to bypass the firewall and did the Windows Firewall enable stuff. I clicked on the test page link and that was succesful (which I believe means my firewall is ok?) but when I did the Bug report and sample image thing I got a false reading. Here's my computer information.

Windows XP with all current updates
Norton Internet Security
Plenty of Ram and hard drive space
I have a cable modem provided by Cox but I'm not sure what kind.

I read a suggestion earlier that Cox may be the problem but they deny blocking person to person transfers.

Thanks in advance for whatever help you can give.

Thanks, I have XP and this suggestion worked just great for me!

I_really_am_Nikki January 9th, 2005 11:04 PM

OMG OMG OMG

It is working! I had done everything but force the IP correctly. I was missing a step!

Also as a previous poster mentioned, I noticed that once or twice even when I exited LW and shut it down from the taskbar that there was still an active process running that I had to shut down.

I am so happy right now I almost pee'ed!

Connection Problems

Lord of the Rings

I am trying to connect just like everyone else.

I have done all of the things that have to be done except on thing and I heard you could help me. I have a Wireless Connection and you said something about there being a Firewall with Linksys. The model # of my Wireless-B USB Network Adapter is

WUSB11 ver 2.8. If you have any other suggestions that would be great. I used to be able to connect to LIMEWIRE but now am not able to so help is appreciated.

JDSKINN

Lord of the Rings January 10th, 2005 07:51 PM

I can't find anything specific on that model re: forwarding a port, & also being USB possibly means it doesn't use a NAT firewall.

However, if it does have the ability you can look over the following articles to see if any of them apply. These links are all from the Linksys support site: 1. list A 2. List B 3. List C 4. List D

JDSKINN have you tried some of the other 'tricks'? Try these one by one until one works.

1. Delete the LW Preferences folder called .limewire (whilst LW is closed!) & found here: Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire OR Windows 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents" (BUT make a note of all your LW settings 1st b/c you'll need to reset them after deleting LW's Prefs folder!!!)

2. Update your Java version 1.5 (take the JRE)

3. Repair LimeWire using the Add/Remove Programs utility. Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs & click on Limewire on the Change/Remove button & it comes up with options and one of them is Repair. Try this.

4. Right-clicking the Limewire icon and going to properties and changed compatability setting to Windows 2000.

5. Right-click on the Limewire icon on the desktop and click on Run as. Then it should come up showing the current user and then switch it over to Administrator.

Still Connecting

LOTR,
I tried everything that you said to try, didn't work, I am runing Xp with a wireless network and have norton and windows firewall (which i disabled to see if it would connect but no luck. So if you have any other suggestions that would be great.
thnx

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2005 01:44 AM

See if you can connect directly without the wireless network. If that means a dial up then try it.
We're just trying to work out the problem here.

bacchus January 11th, 2005 07:50 AM

Still can' t connect

I have tried all of these things and still can't connect.

I have . . .

deleted the preferences folder
Forced IP
run repair
clicked run as ... (there is no administrator option, I'm at home)
turned Windows firewall off
Allowed Norton Security to let it through
updated Java
changed compatability to Windows 2000

I'm running Windows XP
I have plenty of Ram and memory
running Norton Internet Security
Cox cable connection

I tried to connect to the test page and that worked but when I checked bug reports I got a false for received incoming this session.

Lord of the Rings January 11th, 2005 02:43 PM

Hi bacchus

See this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/search...der=descending in reference to Cox.

afoster January 12th, 2005 11:55 AM

I can't find the directory. Is it every file and folder in .limewire?

Lord of the Rings January 12th, 2005 01:26 PM

afoster the answer to that is yes! The entire folder called .limewire
You can find it by doing a search using your OS system's search engine for .limewire

et voilą January 13th, 2005 04:16 AM

@ JDSKINN: it seems you cannot reach the address http://www3.limewire.com:6346 . you could probaly test other ports than the 6346, like something in the 10 000 - 13 000 range (options-advanced-port). Beside that, you could complain to the network administrator or the ISP depending on the situation. There is not much else to do.

Ciao
