Thanks NoKaOi for pointing out that LW now implements the auto-enter IP feature. Acq. has been doing this for many versions. Do you just check the option to force IP and leave the IP entry box blank? I'm on a static IP.

Blackbird June 3rd, 2003 07:34 AM

Stief, the brand router is a "2wire" router called a Homeportal 100S. I already had the firewall disabled for gnutella ports. Yes, other people connect via the router (which is HPNA, if that matters) to the internet, but not to LW. Do I need some sort of utility to "map" the Gnutella port is the router?

It should be also noted that I force my IP and LW auto enters the correct IP address even if it changes, as I do connect via DHCP. But it should also be noted that my computer usually stays on for days before a restart. And my cable modem, which is assigned the IP, never goes off. So although the IP isn't a static IP persay, I never turn it off, so more or less it functions as a static IP.

stief June 3rd, 2003 03:41 PM

Looks like your 2Wire is configured through a browser.
According to http://www.2wire.com/home/hp_index.html#installation
Quote:

HomePortal Upgrades are a snap
Step 1. Using a computer on your HomePortal network open a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
Step 2. Type //homeportal to view your HomePortal user interface.
Somewhere you should see something to do with port mapping.
I'm way out of my league here--but hopes this helps you get started.

Blackbird June 3rd, 2003 04:35 PM

Sweet! I found those homeportal settings, and told it to allow the gnutella ports through to my computer. Before, about 1/3 to 1/2 of all my ULs were not successful, but now, all of them have been (there've been about a dozen since I fixed my settings) successful. This is fantastic. Thank you very much.

volcom June 8th, 2003 11:38 AM

Once I had downloaded LimeWire, I started dowloading songs. But once a song was dowloaded, and I tried to play it, it wouldn't play. It will only let me play one song. How do I get it so that I can hear every song.

NoKaOi June 9th, 2003 03:53 AM

Just an idea . .

Hi volcom and welcome to the world of P2P via Limewire. It is an excellent program with many variables to attend to, as each user and each user's equipment/software, etc. varires. An idea would be for you to download the manual (. . yuk, but when in doubt, read the directions) and check out the section pertaining to the 'preferences' within your Limewire program. Lots depends on what 'player' you are using and that could be the culprit, rather than LW, etc. In short, sounds like the preferences within LW or within your 'player' are not set correctly. However, I'm no expert. I detest reading manuals, however things are getting so sophisticated these days, it sometimes is best to have it on hand to 'look up' specifics. Regardless, I'd bet your problem originates from incorrect settings within LW, your player, or both. Hope this helps.
Aloha

Maximizing upload/download Success LimeWire

Objective:

I'm starting this thread to address two common problems which seem to appear over and over again in the forums.

General description of the problem:

1. Problems downloading content
2. Low upload count

With the influx of users to peer to peer networking and specifically New LimeWire users many of which I assume are also new broadband users there are several issues that arise out of a general lack of knowledge in what is required to participate in this type of networking model with moderate success. There are a few things that become self evident if you've spent any time on the Gnutella network and these forums.

1. Posts to the forum that don't adequately describe the problem. (for example, I can't connect.) -

The status of these problems would have a higher probability of receiving useful feedback if users provided some basic information such as; machine, operating system, connection speed, location of connection I.E. School work or home.

For example: I'm new to Limewire- I just downloaded limewire and installed it on a Windows 98 Machine with a T1 connection to the network from school. I don't have a firewall installed on my computer and don't know if there is one here but I cannot seem to connect using limewire. My other application i'e web browsers and email work fine. Can anybody tell me what's wrong?

2. Posts to the forum for issues that have been addressed in the FAQs suggests that people are not reading them.

3. Posts to forum for issues that have been addressed in other threads this also suggests that people are not even reading the threads before they post.
4. Post to areas of the forum that are not necessarily dedicated to the issues being raised. Connection Problems in the Open Discussion Forum. MAC issues in the Open Forum.

5. Finally, posts to the forum that have nothing to do with file sharing.

Now, for the problems people are having with uploading / downloading, Consider the following suggestions:

To maximize your ability to download successfully do the following things:

1. Go to tools/options/searching/Quality (show all four star results)

This will effectively filter out all of the people who are behind firewalls or have other connection issues, this will greatly reduce your frustration in downloading.

I should note however, that this could significantly reduce the amount of content you see, as most of the content being shared on the network is being shared from hosts which are poorly configured for sharing and you would probably have problems downloading from them anyway.

2. Go to tools/options/searching/speed (show all speeds)

I make this suggestion because if you are already filtering by Quality, filtering by speed will further reduce your results. If there 20 people on modem connections that have the content you want why not download from them.

3. Go to tools/options/filters/hosts under the disallow all messages from specific hosts add the following IPs: 192.168.*.* AND 10.*.*.*

I make this suggestion to filter out all the host who have incorrectly forwarded their private IP address on the network. These IP addresses are NOT routable and you will NOT be able to connect and download content from these hosts so ignore results from these guys. if

4. Go to tools/options/filters/keywords Filter out search results containing !!!

Most likely viruses or porn files emulating your search queries.

Now on to problems with uploading. If you are experiencing problems with people up loading from your computer the suggestions I made in and maximizing your ability to download see:( 1 through 4 above.) your machine could be one of these hosts.

I'll start with some general suggestions:

1. Make sure that you are not sharing from a work or school location as peer to peer traffic tends to be administratively prohibited. although it may not be explicitly blocked they could be applying quality of service rules to your traffic.

2. If you are sharing from home - leave your machine on for at least 4 hours (you can't expect people to download from you if you jump on the network do some searches and then disconnect.)

3. Finally, if you are using NAT (meaning that the IP address of your machine is 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ) now, might be able to connect, search and download from the network but no one will be able to upload from you. If you have taken the advise of others to force your IP using limewire then your half way there, as your port forwarding is working correctly. But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network. To find out what your ip is from the machine that you use to get on Gnutella open a web browser to http://www.whatismyip.com
(write this IP down and force this IP in Limewire) If you need help testing this Just post a reply to this thread.

By implementing these suggestions you will have better luck downloading and uploading on Gnutella.

I'm Back!!

Hello everyone - After a long break supporting other communities I'm back on limewire. I've been monitoring the progress of the application in general and things seemed a little rocky for a while but appear to better now. If you have any question, comments or concerns please feel free to post them under this thread perhaps I can help.

Saving to Playlist

Hi Fellow Users~ my sitch is this: download fine, save to playlist - it's not going into any shared directory. Music's in the Library under "complete" - go to "Playlist" again, but cannot "save the playlist". What am I doing wrong?

Blackbird July 8th, 2003 08:31 AM

I don't know what "save to playlist" means in Limewire. In order to share your music, designate your completed folder as your shared folder. You can do this in Limewire's preferences.

katat August 17th, 2003 11:20 PM

how does one force the IP of the router?

[If you are using NAT (meaning that the IP address of your machine is 10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x ) now, might be able to connect, search and download from the network but no one will be able to upload from you. If you have taken the advise of others to force your IP using limewire then your half way there, as your port forwarding is working correctly. But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network. ]

So, how do I do this?

Thank you,
Karin

katat August 17th, 2003 11:44 PM

how does one force the IP of the router?

Now that I checked-marked "force IP", what do I do? I get a lot of hits, but not even one upload. I also tried keying in my IP number, but it wouldn't let me key in the whole thing. So which digits do I key in? I keyed in the last five, having no idea if that was the right thing to do.

Thanks,
Karin

Blackbird August 17th, 2003 11:48 PM

I believe the box next to force IP are now only for the port being forced, not the IP address. The default port number should be 6346. LW now automatically reads the IP that should be forced.

katat August 18th, 2003 08:02 AM

Then why do I get a pop-up window that says "You must enter a port between 1 and 65535 for forcing your ip address."? What port number do I put in the box? I guess the ip number doesn't go there. Isn't the ip number the same thing as the port number?

Thanks,
Karin

Blackbird August 18th, 2003 08:14 AM

No. As I said, you put in the port number, which is 6346.

Your IP number is a different number than your port number. Your ports on your computer are the methods by which information is transferred. Your IP address is broadcasted and gnutella messages are direceted to go to port 6346 in that broadcast.

katat August 18th, 2003 08:22 AM

Thanks. I will try that right now.

katat August 18th, 2003 08:53 AM

uploading problem

Well, that didn't work either. Now what? Is it that anyone with an IP of 10xxx can't upload files? I mean, I can download all the files I want, I just can't upload.

katat August 18th, 2003 10:26 AM

O.k. Ignore all of the previous messages. I looked at my computer and saw that I had sharing turned off in my preferences.

Thanks anyway,
Karin

katat August 18th, 2003 11:49 AM

But now when I look at the "library window" it says Uploads 0/0. I guess I just can't figure this out! Why is it that Kazaa is so simple and user friendly, and this is sooo difficult?!

I may be one of those guilty of posting a thread in the wrong place and of asking questions about things covered in the FAQ, so I was wondering if you have tips for best places to post to get knowledgeable answers, and if there's any news on acces to the FAQ. I'm using the latest OSX version of limewire, and the FAQ hasn't been accessible since I was first on a couple months ago. I've posted a thread regarding issues with sharing files in the OSX forum as well, and relisted it in the upload/download forum because I, and what I can see of others with the same problem, have gotten very few responses. Those that have been posted are all prefaced by "I'm not an expert, but. . ." I've tried the solutions offered anyway. None of them has worked. The sharing thing only became a problem with the upgrade . . . Anyway, if you have any tips regarding any of this, they would be appreciated.

4 million files distributed

Just a quick response to the last post. I'm not sure if I can help you with your situation in fact I hope that by now you've found a solution to your problem.

For thos interested LeeWare development has passed the 4 million mark for files distributed via a P2P network. For more information please visit http://www.leeware.com/news.html

We hope that you will join us in our distribution of non-infringing content.

AQUEOUSAVIATOR December 22nd, 2003 04:45 PM

I'm using a linksys router and have taken your advice to FORCE the IP address using Limewire. I know the IP address of my router, but when I search for items that I know I'm sharing, I do not see my IP in the list. Do I need to do something else?

R. B.

LeeWare December 22nd, 2003 05:43 PM

Can't Return Results to Self

I don't believe that you can return results for yourself. Meaning that the files you are sharing do not show up in your own search results.

There are two possible options to determine if your sharing is working correctly.

1 - create a uniquely named file for example CHK - 000-000-000
post a reply to this thread when this is done and I'll see if I can download it.

or

2 - leave your machine on for a while I recommend more that 4 hours and check your statistics under the library tab upload column [completed/attempted] uploads.

hope this helps.

Sloan January 26th, 2004 11:02 PM

hey, i just tried doing everything LeeWare said about increasing download speed. But, I am trying to download a 101,902KB file and it is only downloading at 0KB/sec. Says it will take 300+ hours to download. I am running a Mac with OSX and I have a cable connection. I am new to this so I don't know what else to do.

LeeWare January 27th, 2004 05:57 AM

Home Work or School?

You haven't indicated where you are trying to download from. If it is from work or school there may be policies in play to stop P2P file sharing. If it is from home are you sure your ISP allows it? Have you tried downloading different files? Like txt or pdf?

Sloan January 27th, 2004 02:19 PM

I am connecting from home and the only types of files I have tried so far are mp3, .sit, and .dmg. My ISP doesn't have anything that I know of that would prohibit p2p types of things. I have had successful downloads, it is just that sometimes they are incredibly slow. I can check with the ISP to see what the deal is, but I had been avoiding that cause of the chance that it could get me in to trouble. I will also try dowloading some pdf files to see if that has any difference.

Sloan January 27th, 2004 02:29 PM

yeah, the pdf file is also coming in at under 5KB/sec and it's only 7,000KB.

LeeWare January 27th, 2004 02:41 PM

Slow Sources

There's one of two possibilities 1) the source you are downloading your files from are located on slow connections or are overloaded. Your download speed is pretty much determined by the person you are downloading from. You should try to download a file with many sources. You also haven't talked about your connection speed. What is your Upload/Download?

2) Goto a site that gives free bandwidth tests and test your bandwidth. The test results will appear in Kbps this is normal for communications, file sharing programs use KB so 5KB is 40kbps perhaps the person you are downloading from is using a modem or is serving multiple users.

Sloan January 27th, 2004 07:54 PM

I did the bandwidth test and my communication speed is 960.3kbps. Still havn't been able to tell if my ISP has some sort of limitation on p2p sharing. I am also usually downloading from someone with atleast another cable connection as far as I can tell. By the way, thanks for all the help. I appreciate all the patience, I hardly know anything about this stuff and I am trying to grasp it.

stief January 27th, 2004 08:24 PM

for a handy explanation of how gnutella works, see Arne Babenhauserheide's writeup at www.gnufu.net .

for broadband tests (java based) that also give you upload speeds, I like http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest

for more info on whether your ISP currently or plans to filter p2p traffic, you'll have to ask them. Others have posted their findings here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=20678

for info on the US law and filesharing, see http://www.eff.com/share/

Welcome--it's a pretty good community here

Sloan January 29th, 2004 11:34 PM

thanks it seems to be working a little better now, I'll check those links though thanks!

I assume you can download files? Are you behind a firewall? If so LimeWire supports a push function that allows you to make an outbound connection to a person requesting a file from your computer. if you like I can help you test this function. Just reply to this thread and we can set up a test.

That would be correct. If you don't have a firewall then by default you should be able to share. I assume you know how to use limewire if not, I have course which explains how to use the application. [free]

Again if you have MSN Messenger just use the information to contact me and I can help you setup a test.

Uploads

Ok, first let me just say that I've read this whole thread and been back and forth between it and Limewire for a couple of hours. At the risk of being told that I'm too stupid to use it, and should get AOL, I need to ask for some more basic advice.

Second, I've gotta' say, Lee, you're one one the nicest guys I've ever encountered online. I realize you're promoting a business, but still...good on ya'.

I've been using Limewire for a couple of years. I've never taken much notice of it's workings because it never gave me cause. It uploads, it downloads, no problem. I have a modem, so I just use it to get what I really want, and my old PIII 450 has no protection, not even Norton. Never had a problem.

Now I've got this other computer here, belonging to some totally computer illiterate folk, and a brand new cable connection. The cable guy was still fussing around while I was installing Limewire. They have all kinds of crap clogging up the tray- anti virus and spyware protection- all of which I've disabled.

It downloads at blazing speed. But it won't upload. Lots of hits, but no uploads.

I know it's not normal- I imported my shared files and people are all over those in five minutes on my computer, like a feeding frenzy. I can see the searches coming in, looking for what I have, but it still says, "0 active, 0 queued". This matters to me because I share things I want to disseminate- Chomsky, Zinn, etc.

I don't know what kind of firewall the computer has, nor how to find out- I'm totally ignorant about such things, because, as I said, I have neglected all protection for my computer.

I tried to follow the advice in the very first thread, but didn't get very far:

Quote:

I checked my IP and it is not one of those (10.x.x.x or 192.x.x.x), according to the website. I checked the "Force IP" box, but then I don't know what to do. Putting my IP in the box isn't right- too many digits. How do I "force this IP in Limewire"? How will posting here test it?

So, if someone could just help me with that first, we'll see where that gets me.

Thanks,
Joff

LeeWare May 9th, 2004 07:54 PM

Clarifications

Joff,

Thanks for the kind words. I assume that when you say you've imported your shared folder, you did this with the computer you are saying will not upload?

Also, there is a difference between incoming searched / hits and actual uploads. Therefore, if when you imported your content you started seeing searches come in that simply means that the ultrapeers are routing traffic to your machine which might result in a hit for the person issuing the query.

If you are getting hits but no uploads it could mean that no one is actually looking to download the content you are sharing. I have over 400 files on close to 10 servers . I return thousands of hits for only a few hundred uploads.

joff May 10th, 2004 02:06 AM

I imported my shared file from my computer, where it is constantly being downloaded from, to this one, where it has not been downloaded from.

However, one person has gotten through now.

And I just figured out how to disengage the firewall, so we'll see if that helps. Do you think there's any serious danger in this? It's not my computer, and I don't want to screw it up.

Also, in the firewall section it said that my IP is the same as what the website said.

I could still use a brief explanation of these statements:

Quote:

But, you need to FORCE THE IP OF YOUR ROUTER or FIREWALL to the network.

(write this IP down and force this IP in Limewire)
By the way, I went by your website, barely begun to explore. Got a bunch of Democracy Now. Really cool, I had no idea. How do you support it? Philanthropy?

Thanks,
Joff

joff May 10th, 2004 03:51 AM

A pretty fair share of the music I've downloaded -mostly newer stuff- sounds over saturated and distorted. Much like the original recording levels were set too high.

Try downloading edited...no copywritted materials are discussed, and you'll hear what I mean.

I'm not sure that any help I could provide will solve this problem for you as it is a problem with the quality of content. That is not specifically a limewire problem but rather a problem that orginates with the person who ripped the songs.
