No that should not matter at all. Some years ago I kept all my LW download folders on a different partition or drive on Win 2000. The program itself though was on C drive because that's where the system was, & that's the default install location.

If you are referring to the preferences folder, that will be on your system drive, in your user account. But you will only have one if you have previously opened LW.

Can't connect

Can someone please help me??

I am using Windows XP with McAfee security and limewire will not connect. I have had this problem before and I went through the process of configuring the port to 6346 etc and it worked. However I have recently updated my McAfee and now LW can't connect, even when I configure the port in McAfee.

Is there anything else I can do? I really want to get LW working!!!

I am using broadband and have got the latest version of LW (the free version).

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks :wai:

Lord of the Rings January 5th, 2009 03:14 AM

Despite what McAfee says, make sure Windows firewall is turned off.

Remove the previous firewall rule from McAfee & re-add it. Some firewalls are like that, an update of either the firewall or LW software means the the rule needs to be re-added afresh.

Other than that, try a combination of these steps, such as replacing the gnutella.net file: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) :)

Limewire wont work with majicjack

i think i figured that much out if i am wrong let me know , cuz i think thats why i cant connect,. Does anyone limewire connect that uses majicjack? if so let me know and how you did it, Thank you

Sarah77 January 6th, 2009 01:10 AM

Thanks for the reply Lord of the Rings,

I tried going through each of the steps you gave me in the link and managed to get it to connect, but I have to keep deleting the .limewire folder each time I want to use LW. A bit weird but I don't mind doing it as long as it works,

Thanks so much for your help :rolleyes_2:

Psychobabble January 6th, 2009 04:54 AM

Hi all. Newbie here & need help. I need the "How to do this for DUMMIES" version.
Here is some info:
Windows XP
CA Security (I will need a https site for this in the allow section)
Updated Java
Downloaded & used crap cleaner
Downloaded, removed, downloaded LW
I have the icon & try to open it and nothing happens.
Like I said, I need a DUMMIES version here. Please give me a step by step guide to help me fix this. I looked around & most of the answers were way over my head!
If I add the LW site to my CA Security, do I have to turn off my firewall? I do not feel comfortable doing that. Is there a way to get around that step?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Psychobabble January 6th, 2009 09:19 AM

ARGH! STILL having trouble. I have been at this since 6:30 this a.m. I have the icon & nothing opens. What is wrong?
I have downloaded Java, a 2nd Java, reinstalled, rebooted several times now. Grr. I amnot any closer than I was at 7 this a.m. I have followed all the steps I could find in other postings.
HELP!
Is anyone out there?

mistyblueseas January 6th, 2009 10:30 AM

What operating system are you using? If you are using Windows Vista, you are in the hurt locker. Go to your control panel and enter the Java Icon and check the about tab to see what version you have-I have 6-then click on network setting and ensure Use Browser Setting is green. While in your control panel if you have an icon for Security Centre click on this can allow Limewire as you no doubt are behind a firewall. If you do not have this icon you can double click on your Network Connections Icon and then click on the left side in Network Tasks and change "windows firewall settings" when the windows (if you are using this system) box comes up click on the "exceptions tab" and make sure Limewire is checked!!! If it is not there, you need to download it again. On a final note, I had numerous problems getting Limewire to work on my Windows XP system and if you are asking for technical support you may as well go pee into the wind lol. I do not find this site user friendly for the newbies per se. Anyways I hope this works for you let me know as I will get the thread via my email. Cheers

Psychobabble January 6th, 2009 02:13 PM

Thanks for your reply. I do not have vista, just regular Windows xp with a HP. When I downloaded lw I did get all the folders & etc. but when you went to the icon, nothing would happen. The only icon I got was the round circle on the desktop.
I did go to my security & allow lw as well as gnutella.
I checked my security, firewalls. I went to a sticky & followed directions there and followed the steps. There was a test & that came out okay. I have CA security & tried to allow lw but maybe I didn't enter it in correctly. You need a https: and it has to be an "s" after the http for a secure site. Not sure if you can just add them or not. ?
I also downloaded the lated Java that was reccomended. I also downloaded the crap cleaner (worked great!).
There was one box in ? security setting (drop down type) & lw was checked in the box.
Not sure what else to do here. I have deleted everything now. Is there another site that is easier to download for music? This is very frustrating.
Thanks

Limewire Download

If downloaded correctly there should be 2 icons on your desktop. One will say Limewire with the green icon and the version the other will just say lime wire. Go to "My Computer" and check on C drive if this is your main hard drive then double click on Program Files-Limewire should be in there like this: "C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe" if it is not there then or course you will have to download again. Contact me on Yahoo messenger as user misty_blue_seas and we can IM and see what happens. The 2nd icon on your desktop should just be the shortcut, but if both are not there then will download again. Are you using the free download version? There is also Itunes but they charge 99 cents a song I believe. Let me know

Psychobabble January 6th, 2009 03:40 PM

Hello.
Well, I downloaded again. I have the icon on the desk top. If I go to programs, I see it listed there. I try tp open them & nothing happens. I have all of the files I think that I should have (lw download). Here is what I have:
Buy lw pro, install log, spacer, lw exe, copying, language, unpack & etc. There are about 17 of them.
I will go back to my firewall again & see what I can try to do there. Still stumped!
I am not on yahoo. Sorry. Oh well, I will just keep at it here.
Thanks

Please help. Unable to connect. I have vista with mcafee. I updated mcafee turned all firewalls off still detecting a firewall after reseting computer. I allowed limewire on mcafee program permission. Deleted and redownloaded lw. I entered the port numbers(hopefully done correctly). Unable to connect to a host. I have tried everything I can think of. Using comcast cable for connection. Done tech support for mcafee and comcast and didn't get far. I'm kind of new to this so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Need help connecting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HI. I have read HUNDREDS of postings and tried deleting the folder off the preference folder and everything suggested that I could understand. I am not a computer wiz, but an average user and, as the name suggests, I AM NEW TO MAC!!!! Here is the run down of my situation>
- Have a new macbook laptop connected to a PC via Wireless N connection. The router is Linksys N Ultra Range Plus;
- Operating Mac OS X 10 (the newest one whatever it is);
- finally downloaded Lime Wire and now all I get is one bar. I am not evern sure that there is a connection listed because when I get it to show me all connections I dont see one there and it asks me for a username on the connection window. IT does give me a proxy number automatically. I tried my security password and other names attached to my wireless connection. Nothing works;
- I got it so that connecting has to be done manually and I also disabled the pop up window with the tips (as suggested in some postings).

NOTHING WORKS!

Can one of you computer and limewire wizes help me in PLAIN ENGLISH!

Most postings go over my head!!!!

Thanks thanks thanks thanks!

Found a solution that worked for me. From Limewire site, File>disconnect. Wait 5 mins then reconnect. First time in 6months I have my Limewire back. YAHOOO!!!

I'm glad to see that the technique is working for some users. Though it is very surprising that the fix is not as general purpose as I thought it would be.

Hello,
1. Sometimes my firewall icon is on top of the blue world icon which prevents a connection in Limewire.
2. I don't want to totally disable my firewall (I think it is from Norton Anti-virus maybe?) as it protects my computer.
3. How do I allow limewire past the firewall as like a "trusted program" without completely disabling my firewall (which would leave me open to viruses, ect..)
Thank you for your help.

Try this (config nortons internet security) if that doesnt work try this link (lw nortons internet security 3007) scroll down to post #3 by shanah16 --
someone else tried this:-
What i did is i went to the Norton Antivirus icon and i opened it. Then, i went to "pc security" and then to "manage firewall." Then i went to "program rules" and i scrolled down to limewire. To the right of the name was a thing that gave me three options. I could either allow it, block it, or custom. I chose allow and then i closed it and it worked! Im not sure if this will work for others because I have the newer version of Norton Antivirus but hey, its worth a shot.

you are a life saver..it worked, thanks alot. Limewire had been working fine then all of a sudden nothing. Your fix was a great help.

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

Hi danny,
Running two or more real-time anti-virus, anti-spyware and firewall monitors at the same time can cause a conflict. That conflict can result in slow computer performance, error messages, crashes of the programs or other types of failure. You will very likely end up with little or no protection. Disable one of your firewalls & and one of your antivirus programs. In your system details para 10 -- can you try that test again -- if it still doesnt work it means you are being blocked by a firewall or your ISP -- Is your router/firewall configured to allow limewire full access to your computer -- please check

I'm glad it worked for some but, I am still having trouble. I deleted everything relating to limewire, re-installed it and tried it all again. I've tried every option I could find to remedy this problem. I've also made sure that my firewall is allowing limewire in. I still have the little wall over the earth pic but, that never mattered before.

most if not all modem/routers have a firewall -- please ensure that this is configured to allow LW full access to your computer. If your avast has a firewall switch off/disable your vista firewall -- if it's only a antivirus program switching it on/off wont make any difference what so ever to LW connection problems -- but it will make a lot of difference to your computer -- leave it enabled at all times. have you tried this -- In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- Try one fix at a time --- do them in this order:-
Check your firewall, Delete/Replace gnutella.net File, Delete Limewire's Preference Folder -- if still not working go
back to the top and do the rest of the fixes. NOTE: [1] when you replace the gnutella.net file with a new one check the filesize --
The download size from mediafire (gnutella.net) is 25.37kb -- if smaller download another gnutella.net file. [2] The Preference Folder is another name for Limewire Folder.

Hi Ben,
Find out where your files are saved to: in LW go tools > options > saving. Now you'll see the location of the folder where your files are saved. If you're using 4.12.5 then the default location for saving is C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Shared. That's a safe location & if you uninstall LW then you won't lose your files. If your saving location is different to that, make sure that the files aren't being saved within LW's Program Files or Application Data, or anywhere within LimeWire. That could mean that you'd lose files if you uninstall;)

It's always a good idea to back up your saved files, just in case you have major problems with your computer.

Another thing - if you don't have your 4.12.5 installer saved, you'd lose that Pro version by uninstalling LW. And you can't download old Pro installers from the LW site.

Norton 360 includes a firewall, so you need to make sure that the XP firewall's off. Otherwise, the 2 will conflict with each other. Once the XP firewall's turned off, reconfigure Norton firewall to allow LW. Check out the links below for more info.

If you're still stuck, there are heaps of other connection fixes to try in this thread: If LW Will Not Connect

First, the "delete-the-pref-folder" advice did nothing for me.

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

InLimewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- Try one fix at a time --- do them in this order: (i) Check your firewall (ii) Delete/Replace gnutella.net File (iii) Delete Limewire's Preference Folder -- if still not working go back to the top and do the rest of the fixes.
NOTE: [1] when you replace the gnutella.net file with a new one and save it to yr desktop check that the filesize is approx 25kbs or more.(gnutella.net download is 25.37kbs) -- if smaller download another gnutella.net file.
[2] The Preference Folder is another name for Limewire Folder.
if after all of this your problem remains click on (system details) fill in and post back here

I have vista and I can't connect limewire to internet. Today I have contacted with McAfee and they had me reset default and it worked, now I opened up again, no connection. I don't know what to do :(

Did you try resetting your default again

In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- Try one fix at a time --- do them in this order:-
1. Check your firewall.
2. Delete/Replace gnutella.net file
3. Delete Preference Folder (otherwise known as the Limewire folder)
4. Update java
5. Change listening port
6. Go through the rest of the fixes.
if after all of this your problem remains click on (system details) fill in and post back here

NOTE: you must show hidden files to find your limewire folder: For Vista users you will find it here:-

C:\Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\LimeWire <--(preference folder)

Hey I have been getting connection problems aswell with limewire, ive had it for over a year on my laptop and all of a sudden its just stopped connecting.

Now when i open Limewire it says No internet connection.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with limewire5 but no good there i deleted my prefferences i acessed the options and disabled Ultrapeer, DHT, TLS and OOB, I also checked my norton fire wall and that has always been allowing limewire to do its work.

im running low on ideas what to do its even been effecting my bitorrent considering they run on the same rules.

Try removing all LW rules from within Norton & then add them from scratch.

After you deleted LW's preferences folder, did you have to go through the setup wizard again?

Have you been through the other fixes in this thread (click on link)?: If LW Will Not Connect

Go & find your gnutella.net file... how big is the file?

Please give us your details: System details - help us to help you -> Provide these details when you post!!!

Can't open!!!!

I have mac OS 10.4.11. I downloaded a new version of limewire but it won't open or connect. I deleted the old version including the preference setting. I noticed that new version does not install and new preference folder. I am thinking this is the problem. If you think so, how do I restore the preference setting?

I need help.

thanks, tmak

Not opening has nothing to do with Connection problems. I've deleted one of your double-posts already. Please go back & read the forum rules before you feel the 'boot'.

I reread the rules. I don't understand what you mean.

It is not a connection problem. I have tried opening limewire in different places and connections setting. My connection is cable.
It is not firewall problem.
I am in USA. ISP charter communications.

I would really appreciate it if someone can help.

thanks
