OMG i tried the Gnutella.net method twice and it worked omfg ty birdy so much i could give u a massive hug mate :D!! look at all the info i had down to help you XD.

Though i wish every one good luck with their own problems.

. OS version? (eg: Windows 98): I have Windows vista and I do have an adminastrater account.
2. What firewalls you have?: I have Norton 360 and I beleive Windows Defender is a firewall aswell.
3. How much ram?: I beleive I have 1024 mb (sticker is fairly faded).
4. Hard Disk space available?: Around 55gb +
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.): Broadband.
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? (eg: Linksys WRT54Gv4): Belkin Wireless 802.11g (I hope i helped there :S)
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)?: From my house.
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.: Limewire version 5.0.11 and Java version 6.
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Bigpond broadband.
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'.: It says Your test worked! just that single sentence.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.: I am sharing the internet with my computor through the router only other p2p sharing program i can think of that i have is Bittorent.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. This is a new problem with an experienced user (had some small problems like this just closed and opened limewire and it worked).
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?: I use LW5 so when i go into advanced tools it says you are behind a firewall.
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?: umm well my router is connected to the modem and the phone port, i beleive UPnP has always been working as this has only been a problem recently and ive never port forwarded before.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall. Norton 360.
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland).: Australia.
17. uNo my setup with my router and modem has not changed, Since this problem began i updated my limewire to LW5, I have updated my java before though there was no problem when i did, no i havent added any new software, I have not moved houses and i have not changed my internet plan.

I hope i was some use of help there :)

In my attempts to fix this problem I have done the following.

Uninstalled and reinstalled LW.
Checked my firewall to see if it was letting LW5 through (it says it was).
I removed the rule in my firewall and readded from scratch.
I have disabled performance options (Ultra, TLS DHT).
I have disabled OOB.
I have deleted trash from the incomplete folder.

This thread topic is not for discussing such issues about purchasing pro. Start a new thread in Open Discussion section. :) If you wish connection assistance, then check the forum rules as you seem to be missing some details. (The poster after you knew what to do.) ;)

Installed the LimeWire version yesterday..... I've had some difficulties getting a connection...after I deleted the previous preferences, it worked fine. But I noticed that it takes a very long time before a connection is established (using Windows XP, Speed Dial Touch Modem....)

danmelad February 4th, 2009 02:35 AM

Worked For Me

Followed the instructions and the connection came back as soon as I reconnected. Lot a few partial downloads and had to oput a few settings back in place - but apart from that it now seems to be working fine!!

Thanks

Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.) or vista see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

adamsmistymay February 6th, 2009 04:11 PM

this has happened to me before. I installed and redownloaded 4 or 5 times. It didn't work. After about I week I was going to attempt all this again and Limewire suddenly worked. Now after a month it's not working again. I have Vista. Please help......

The .limewire folder is the old preferences location. You might not have that folder, if you're using a recent version of LW.

Try looking for a file named LimeWire...C:\Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\LimeWire.

The Application Data folder's hidden by default - so you'll need to show hhidden files & folders to be able to see it. Go to Control Panel > Folder Options > click on the View tab > put a dot in the circle next to ‘show hidden files and folders’ > apply > ok.

If deleting that folder doesn't help, check out this thread for lots of different fixes: If LW Will Not Connect

h2ylm February 8th, 2009 12:22 PM

got it - kinda

Hi, I just downloaded the free version 4. something, and that works fine, can't really tell the difference from my pro one , so it will do, thanks again for helping though, most appreciated.

neilw February 8th, 2009 12:35 PM

Hi. I've had Limewire for many years, but over the past few months the connection is inconsistent. I start it up - it never connects. It always sticks on 'starting connection'. I continue browsing on my browser (AOL), then look back at Limewire and hey presto I've suddenly got a super-charged connection! This can be after 10 minutes, or a couple of hours. So obviously I can eventually connect, but I've no idea how. Can anyone explain this ?

neil

h2ylm February 8th, 2009 12:50 PM

same here

same here neil, only mine wouldn't connect at all, i'm now back on the free one - at least it's working

beaglepup February 8th, 2009 01:00 PM

I have Vista. I don't have a Document and Settings. What should I do?

Lord of the Rings February 8th, 2009 03:20 PM

Search for limewire in the hidden folder.

How well do you understand the directories of your VISTA machine? You have a personal user area? Where is that?

abajaba February 9th, 2009 02:29 PM

any of these fixes for the new limewire 5?

my old limewire used to connect, now the new one wont.

birdy February 9th, 2009 06:16 PM

There are fixes for LW 4 & LW 5 here: If LW Will Not Connect

Start off by deleting your gnutella.net file when LW's properly closed. Then start LW & see whether you have a connection.

Otherwise, there are lots of other fixes to try in that thread:)

beaglepup February 9th, 2009 07:18 PM

I tried all ideas and nothing worked. My internet is fine though. I downloaded bit torrent and then downloaded a game and was able to play it. I have no idea why LW will not work. Last week it was fine now nothing.

In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- Try one fix at a time --- do them in this order:-
1. Check your firewall.
2. Delete/Replace gnutella.net file
3. Delete Preference Folder (otherwise known as the Limewire folder)
4. Update java
5. Change listening port
6. Go through the rest of the fixes.
if after all of this your problem remains click on (system details) fill in and post back here

"If" you read properly through Skyliner's advice, you'd have seen the link to supply system details. We cannot help much without them.

Thanks Birdy - problem solved after months of frustration (and consigning LW to the scrapheap).
Registered only to bestow my thanks (only needed Gnutella file deleting).

9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Shaw

Have you moved house, changed internet plan or ISP etc etc? Tried to update to LW5 when problem started and nothing changed but then went back to LW4.18

I have tried all the suggestions in the forum and nothing changed.

Lord of the Rings February 11th, 2009 07:25 AM

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2009 does include a firewall. Is the PCillin firewall turned on or off? If it's on then make a firewall rule allowing LW, & disable Vista's firewall.
Setting up an exception for LimeWire in your software firewall (click in link)

barsan87 February 11th, 2009 10:41 AM

Okay i am using limewire 5 on my windows vista and am unable to connect! This happened out of no where. I tried deleting the whole thing and reinstalled it, still no connection. Please help with a step by step process!

barsan87 February 11th, 2009 11:01 AM

I have also checked my firewall and limewire is already an exception.

Lord of the Rings February 11th, 2009 11:54 AM

Try deleting your LW preferences folder? It must only be done whilst LW is closed; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html

When setting up, it might be worth disabling performance options as described here: If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link)

barsan87 February 11th, 2009 12:33 PM

Also another thing which most likly does not have to do with connection problems is that my limewire keeps freezing up. This problem has never occured before and i have been using limewire for probably 6-7 years. Problems with freezing and problems with connections started at the same time!

Lord of the Rings February 11th, 2009 12:35 PM

Remove all your incomplete files from your incomplete folder, if only temporarily. Then try opening LW. The incomplete files might be flooding the connection as well as freezing your LW. ;) I'd back up your preferences folder or if you still have it, the downloads.dat & .bak files in the incomplete folder when you remove the incomplete files.

beaglepup February 12th, 2009 12:53 PM

I checked my PC-cillin and changed it to allow LW through. Under the exemption tab the connection is ticked under outgoing. Is this correct or should it be incoming? I turned off windows firewall. Nothing has changed though I still can not connect. Also in LW the earth is still behind a wall. If I run over it is says limewire directs a firewall. I don't know of any other firewalls though. I don't have any other virus check on my computer. Would there be one in spybot or Ad-ware?

beaglepup February 12th, 2009 01:40 PM

I think I finally got it working. In Limewire I click on Tools→Options→Advanced→Firewall then under Listen to port I changed it to 39720
And so far it is working. Thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions.

I see a handful of posters who seem to be missing something & wonder why nobody has responded to their posts. Read the forum description at top of page. We can guess & guess ... like guess that a UFO came between LW & the network. Unless you supply the details specified we cannot help much.

What is The Directory for Windows Vista?

Hi

I'm sort of having Connections problems. It wasn't until I Unistalled The Software and Re-Installed the Software Again, that it shows Full Connection.

Thing is, I think this may be a re-occuring thing.

Does anyone Know Why that happens and What can be done to resolve it, so I don't have to keep unistalling and reinstalling everytime I want to Use LW?

Also, What is the Directory for Windows Vista?

Thanx

OS X:
/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

I'd love to hear how this works for everyone.

(Can't Connect) How do I clear my Limewire preferences on Vista?

Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with the Limewire connection problem on Vista? I was able to connect with no problems for two years and now I can't get a connection to save my soul. All of my security programs are allowing it through, and I've used every troubleshooting recommendation I could find to no avail. It may be the clearing of the preferences thing that worked for so many of you, but Vista's documents and settings are rigged a bit differently then XP. There's a documents icon but no settings that I can find so I can't find the way to clear my limewire preferences. I'd be eternally greatful if anyone can help with this.

rissa* February 20th, 2009 05:30 PM

i'm using vista & deleting the gnutella.net file helped! it FINALLY connects and i can search and download. thank youuu. =)

rissa* February 20th, 2009 05:36 PM

joe-001,
i had the exact same problem (i'm using vista too). did you try deleting & re-installing the gnutella.net file? b/c that was my problem, think it's a glitch or something.

rissa*'s suggestion of deleting/replacing the gnutella.net file is often a fix. More info's found in this thread (click on link): http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...tml#post298705
If you're using LW 4 then you may need to replace the gnutella.net file. If you're using LW 5 then apparently you only need to delete the file.

macabre_angel February 22nd, 2009 07:44 PM

yeah, it worked!

THANK YOU. reinstalling LW worked i can connect again! however, this seems to be a consistant problem with LW. Anyone know why, or how to fix this glich?

kezza93 February 22nd, 2009 10:49 PM

Hi there,

When I get onto LW and I go to search for a song it does not return any files and says I need to be connected to find files.

What do I do to fix this??

Lord of the Rings February 22nd, 2009 10:55 PM

Firstly check whether you are connected or not http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...tml#post338528 (click on blue link)

If not connected, see If LW Will Not Connect (click on the blue link) first then if still no good, post back details as it suggests.

Hey I'm also having trouble connecting to limwire.
I'm at school and it just stopped connecting one day. Everyone elses limewire works fine, so it has nothing to do with the school's LAN connection.
I've turned off my firewalls and virus systems, that doesn't work.
I've reinstalled limewire multiple times, and have deleted all existing limewire applications.
And of course I've tried restarting my computer.

Any ideas?

P.S. I have Vista

Try changing the listening port. Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Firewalls. You could try changing the connection port too. Choose one between 49152 - 65535.
