If LW Will Not Connect

Sr. McD October 1st, 2008 09:20 PM

Howdy! Running Vista and having the same connection problems as everyone else. Tried both Limewhacko's suggestion and deleting preferences folder with no result. Have used Limewire successfully with NO INTERRUPTIONS whilst running XP, but since switching to Vista, ability to connect has remained sporadic. Saw a suggestion in this thread that it might be a problem with certain ISPs, but came across the following on another file-sharing site:

"Windows XP service pack 2/Windows Vista users: microsoft has instated a limit on the number of concurrent connection attempts in these versions of windows which may adversely affect the performance of the client."

I'm about as tech-savvy as your average grandma, so I have no idea if this is relevant. Anyone wanna take a stab?

First, the "delete-the-pref-folder" advice did nothing for me.

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

I don't even have a preference folder. I have never been able to open LW. I had no problems with the download nor installation. I even have bought LW pro for 6 months. Have written tech support and they have not even answered. What did I pay all that money for.
I went to my Java in the control panel and updated to 7???? assuming that is 1.7. Have a feeling that is screwing everything up but I still could not open LW with 1.6 so I don't know what the problems are. Do other download programs interfere ie MP3Rocket?(that said it was unable to work with the present version of iTunes. I am so confused I am ready to throw all of this down the drain. Even the stupid iPod shuffle.
Any help appreciatied.
Windows vista premium, 2gb memory, 60gb hard drive
THanks

Remoc October 11th, 2008 01:18 AM

Hi Joanne, Here are a few suggestions that may help.

Try uninstalling all versions of Java from add/remove programs and then use Crap Cleaner to clean the registry.

Try updating to the latest version of Java here Java SE Downloads (Sixth one Down) Useing the JRE Offline Installer.

If the latest update gives you any problems, try this older version, which has worked well for lots of people: Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11
Hope this Helps. :)

vaisforlovers October 12th, 2008 12:11 AM

Still cannot open LS

:bangh: I have tried and done everything you suggested. I still cannot open LW. I had no problems with the Java.
It is too late to add all the information ya'll want in a post. I will do it next time.
Anyone have suggestions I would appreciate it. I may try the un-install,re-install and see what happens.
Thank you.
Joanne

Cant connect

1. OS version? Windows Vista Home premium upgrade 32 bit
2. What firewalls you have? Windows Firewall. I've made limewire an exception on it. I hadMcaffe firewall but I have uninstalled it.
3. How much ram? 2.5 gig
4. Hard Disk space available?143 gig
5. Connection type? Broadband Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Motorolla surfboard Linksys wrt160n
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? House
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? 4.18.8
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Comcast

JMM%& October 12th, 2008 03:14 PM

I deleted everything and it seems to work....

vaisforlovers October 12th, 2008 04:28 PM

LW will not open after trying various fixes

Answers to System questions:
1 - Vista Premium with administrative privileges.
2 - windows firewall
3 - Ram 2Gb
4 - Hard disk available 41.5Gb
5 - Satellite
6 - Linskys router
8 - connect from home
9 - LW 4.18 Java 1.6
11 - Hometown computing
12 - I FAILED THE TEST WITH ERROR "LW takes to long to open" what does this mean???? :(
13 - Firewall detected what does this mean???
15 - Avast anti-virus,SpySweeper
14 - don''t know how router set up I added limewire to the firewall plus the port 65000
16 - USA
I hope that is all. But I don't understand the test nor what the results mean. I looked for an answer on the system page but couldn't find answer.
Does having M3Rocket program cause an issue with LW? When I installed FrostWire it said that I had LW running and that it caused a conflict and removed it. But LW wasn't working then either.
I think it may be the firewall, but I don't understand the "Advanced" section of the firewall program at all. Could that be why I can't open LW?
I know it is too many questions, but I hope someone will answer esp. the failed LW test.
Thank ya'll who have tried to help and I will wait for a reply.

(a) hmm does not sound good. O.o Which model of Linksys router do you have if you can possibly find out? This might be very important.

(b) You are connected via satellite. Many if not most satellite services have restricted services. It looks like in this case they might be possibly blocking various (many) connection ports, thus only expecting you to be using your browser for the internet & not much more.

(c) try going to LW's menu bar, Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewalls & change both listening & connection ports to 6500 & set it to manual port forward. Then go to LW's menu bar, File -> Disconnect, wait a minute, then return to the menu & choose connect.

Preference File in XP SP2

(you must show all hidden files)
[1] Open windows explorerselect Tools à Folder Options à View à Show hidden files and folders.
[2] In windows explorer look for the Limewire Folder – go here:-
c:\documents and settings\username\applications data\LimeWire (or) c:\documents and settings\username\limewire

Delete the limeWire/limewire folder (also called the preference folder)
((Ensure LW is closed before you delete the preference folder))

For further help:-
In Limewire Links (below) click on (If LW will not connect) and go through these fixes -- if still no good click on (system details) fill in and post back here

Sorry ... do you want personal service? Will you pay my airfare & hotel fee to travel to USA or europe to fix your problem? lol We do NOT work for LimeWire ... we receive nothing at all. We are like you, hobbyists p2p users. If you don't like LimeWire then use Phex. ;)

Sometimes we get thanks for the help we give here .. sometimes we get people thinking 'we' are responsible for their problems. lol

Whilst on the topic monsieur305 , I see you are in breach of forum rules for not supplying your computer details as described in forum rules as a requirement for assistance for connection problems .. despite your 5 posts.

BTW how's the weather down there in georgia. :)

monsieur305 October 26th, 2008 05:57 PM

i am only frustrated with lime wire the company and anyone who gains profit from the subscribers money. its just not fair! so u can lol all that you please but in the end limewire and its associates are the ones who apprear to be gettin the last laugh . all the way to the bank! i appreciate anyone who shares their product knowledge but at this point im only venting my frustrations........ i am merely human.

Well you should have started with LW Basic first ... if can connect ok & like it, then consider getting Pro. LW Basic is Free. ;)

there is no way i could have know that i would have ran into so much trouble. i can connect i just cant download or play anything. when i click nothing happens

Lord of the Rings October 26th, 2008 06:28 PM

It may be related to one of the issues here Cant download at all - nothing happens when I click download (click on link). Else it's a corrupt java issue, uninstall all java versions & reinstall, else or and, delete your LW prefs folder. ;)

Moose148 October 27th, 2008 10:08 AM

Ive tried everything.uninstalling LW and reinstalling.. uninstalling java and reinstalling it. rebooting, shutting off all fire walls and a/v software. After suffering the same connection problems as all the rest of you, I stumbled onto a reliable and easy fix for my installation that might work for you. Just find and delete the gnutella.net file. LimeWire will create another one the next time it is started. Since finding this fix, I never fail to connect almost immediately after starting LimeWire. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me. I'm now a very content LimeWire Pro user.

Moose148 October 27th, 2008 10:34 AM

teapot,

where do you find that.. Ive looked and cant find it.. I dont have that file in my vista package

Sorry, I'm not familiar with Vista as I'm still on XP Pro Sp3. For me, it's in C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\LimeWire. Doesn't Vista have a file search function ? If so, just search for all instances of gnutella.net and delete them. LimeWire will build new ones as needed.

Lord of the Rings October 27th, 2008 05:08 PM

Location for preferences folder in Vista is a little different: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html (click on link); also slightly different is the method to turn on 'Show hidden files & folders'.

C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\Roaming\Limewire

what do u mean delete the directory in limewire in c/douctuments and programe files u mean the whole folder just delete it ?

Dragon_Master October 29th, 2008 11:56 AM

what do u mean the directory the whole foldr ?

Lord of the Rings October 29th, 2008 12:37 PM

The folder called 'Limewire' found at the above location. :)

Next time you open LW, it will create a fresh folder. ;)

TammyDee October 29th, 2008 02:59 PM

Limewire SUCKS

Ok, I have been using Limewire forever, my sub. expired and I renewed today and BOY AM I SORRY..... I have spent an entire day drying to deal with this firewall issue, emailing back and forth tech. support from Limewire and they just keep responding with everything I have already been prompted to try. They need to get off their butts and fix the problems. I have requested a refund, and of course, no response. I will be cancelling the charge on my credit card.

Good Luck everyone! I give up!

Remoc October 29th, 2008 04:36 PM

Hey Tammy :welcomeani: To the Gnutella Forums. :)

Can you tell us what all you have tried to fix this issue.
There are two Fixes that have worked for Many Members, that I will give you to try. If you've tried these with No Success, then we can try a few others. See Below.

First of all, delete LW's preferences folder. See the thread below (click on link) for instructions. If you've deleted the prefs folder properly, you'll go through LW's setup wizard again when you restart LW.

If that doesn't fix things, delete or replace the gnutella.net file (instructions for that in the thread below as well). Otherwise, try the other fixes there.

If LW Will Not Connect
If nothing there helps, please post back with your system details.

Hope this Helps. :)

miamio October 29th, 2008 07:58 PM

/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.
