Hi,well done. Im using windows XP Pro and it worked straight away.Thanks.

birbal August 13th, 2008 11:06 AM

Wow! Solved my problem!

My issue was that previously for years I had been able to connect with no problems whatsoever, but then one day, the following problem started. Every time I started limewire, I would only get to one bar of connection, that tiny insignificant even difficult to call a connection bar bar.
This has been driving me nuts as limewire has been unavailable to me, and as you all know, this is a HUGE nuisance.
THANK YOU, for the problem I outlined above, this solution of deleting the .limewire folder in your profile folder really does the trick. Loosing one's settings is a very small price to pay for getting the connection functionality back, and now that this is a working solution, I'm sure that playing around with various things in the folder one can actually resolve this issue and then keep one's settings.
If you have Norton's god help you, 10 to 1 that's the cause of your woe.

I don't think it's advisable for you to Mis Lead members about Norton, especially when you can't even figure out how to connect to LW.

I've used Norton for many years and have Never had an issue.

There was a time that my son couldn't connect to the Gnutella Network and he deleted the Pref Folder and that fixed the problem.

Had Nothing to do with Norton. I've also yet to get Infected as long as we've used Norton, and thats been over five years.

birbal August 14th, 2008 04:11 AM

Nortons

I have a Master's in CIS, am an MCSE, MCSA, am a Director of Technology, and have worked in the field of computers for over 10 years. I have had numerous issues with Norton being problematic so I speak with much experience, my Texan friend.
Kudos to your son who was able to fix the issue! I just get too busy with work to futz around with LW, I have clients to attend to.
If you ever get tired of paying a fee for Norton, try AVG, it's entirely free for home users and does a better job of protecting your system than Norton without the undue interference.
Incidentally, LW lists Norton as being a rather well-known problem when it comes to connection issues.

Lord of the Rings August 14th, 2008 01:06 PM

LW does need to be re-added to Norton's firewall rules with each new LW version or Norton program update. Norton also struggles when run alongside Windows firewall, which results in less security not more. Only one firewall should be active because most will clash with each other resulting in unpredictable results. :)

birbal we understand where you are coming from. :) To each their own experience & personal choice for their own reasons. :)

Remoc August 14th, 2008 06:25 PM

Wow Birbal, I was Almost Impressed with your resume until you listed your credentials. LOL

I won't continue to play your Stupid little game, so keep it up, and I will have to "Learn" you a thang or tu. Take this as a warning. :D

No Good

this DID NOT work for me!:nono:

birbal August 17th, 2008 05:43 AM

Regarding MeMyselfAndI1975

Can you describe what problems you're having precisely? Are you running the latest version of LW? You can check this by going to Help->about limewire. The latest version is 4.18.3.
Also, check firewall settings, limewire adds it automatically to the Windows Firewall, but other applications, notably Norton, can be problematic.
Check to see if you have any firewall SW and add LW as an exception. Also, make sure that your provider allows file sharing.
Good luck!

Chefboz August 17th, 2008 07:36 AM

Worked Fine -

Had some trouble finding the Limewire Preferences File.

It was located at:

Username/Documents and Settings/application data/limewire

Had to make sure that Limewire was COMPLETELY CLOSED!

Nothing has worked for me so far! I have added lw to mcafee as an exception. When I did that it said there was a rule that I needed to change? thanks

memyselfandi1975 August 17th, 2008 10:13 AM

regarding birbal

Lord of the Rings August 17th, 2008 12:36 PM

We CANNOT help you without system details ! How many times do we need to say that ! Besides it's in the forum rules !

sestey August 17th, 2008 12:54 PM

pretty soon if you keep saying "we CANNOT help..." we all will stop using your product!
It's readily apparent that MANY people are having connection issues using recent versions of your product and comcast. I would suggest you start looking into the problem and stop screaming at users...

sestey August 17th, 2008 01:04 PM

btw
here is MY info
OS :Windows XP, version 2002, service pack 2
Computer: HP AMD Athlon X2 Dual core processor 5200+, 2.61 Ghz, 2GB RAM
Security/virus protection : Mcafee Version 8.1 build 8.1.173 virusscan ver 12.1.110

Limewire Client: Limewire Basic client 4.18.1

Problem: When attempting to connect limewire client does not connect but continually says "you are currently connecting to the network...." however no connection is ever made.

My mcafee AND windows firewalls are disabled.

memyselfandi1975 August 17th, 2008 01:54 PM

first of all its 2008, not 1988 & this connection nonsense should NOT be happening.

my pc HP (grey box that holds pc brains has flashing lights & buttons) bought 7-23-03 from best buy, somewhere in usa, i think it was around 430 in afternoon. 1 gig ram, 3 gig processor speed pentium 4, win xp service pack 2, standard keyboard, wireless mouse with approximately 4 day battery life, 21" (20" viewable) viewsonic monitor, mcafee security center 8.1. i use comcast cable for internet, 6mps costs 29.99/ mo not including taxes. currently using LW client 4.18.1 error message says "limewire is connecting to servers", & just sits there doing nothing. last time i checked (& used LW), when you click "connect" that meant i was connected!

Remoc August 17th, 2008 02:45 PM

:lmao:Well Guys, "sestey, and memyselfandi1975" I guess you should stop using Limewire then, LOL

here's what you do...

its actually simple...if lw has worked in the past, close lw then hit ctrl-alt del and go to processes, find lumewire.exe and end it, make sur lw tray icon is gone...the explore to

Username/Documents and Settings/application data/limewire

and delete that file...next re-boot and start lw...it will work

If you really want you can keep the deleted directory around and simple move your limewire.props file to the new directory, but this may invalidate the fix.

We will hopefully discover what is causing this issue and integrate an automated fix in a future version.

A beginner who cant connect to Frostwire

Hi. I'm not a technically minded person, but I'll try and give you as much detail as possible.

I have a Mac OS X 10.4.11
Broadband Connection 4mgbts (I think)
Frostwire 4.17

I have used limewire with no problems before but recently couldn't connect to the network. As a result I downloaded Frostwire but with no success. After I installed the program it trys to connect but comes up with the error message

"frostwire could not detect an internet connection. please check your firewall settings and try to restart frostwire ".

If anyone could help me that would be great but could I please ask if you can take me through it in easy and simple way

7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help bar > About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. _ LIMEWIRE 4.18.6
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? VERIZON
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? It says it worked.
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? no.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. no, it has never connected on this computer.
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image yes. and iv turned off all firewalls.

After deleting the .limewire directory and restarting I had to set up my preferences again but connected immediately. You fix worked like a charm thanks.

Firstly, choose one firewall. If run two then it will result in less security not more plus other side effects & problems. Configure the one you choose to 'allow' LW in the firewall rules.
Make sure LW is not using same connection or listening port as any other LW running on same connection. Check this via Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewalls.
Check thru suggestions here (try each one): http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

I am not sure about the Verizon router. It's my guess they have it made by another company who label it with their own name on it. Example it could be a Westell6100. I know with that brand they are best manually port forwarded, their UPnP support is quite unreliable. (Edit: Google results tend to agree with my guess, your router is most likely a Westell, since Verizon also use this model.) If above suggestions don't work then port forwarding is probably way to go. Let us know if need further help then I will give instructions on how to port forward. :)

firewall problems

I had major problems running latest Limewire [XP SP3] after years of no problems. Did search on all files & folders with word limewire. Deleted everything.
I turned OFF the firewall and loaded limewire and everything worked. You will need to reset preferences but no big deal. Hope this helps!

memyselfandi1975 August 25th, 2008 07:37 PM

so how exactly is this directory cleared? i went into user documents & limewire but did not find such file.

Remoc August 25th, 2008 07:50 PM

So how's BS workin' for ya LOL

firewall problems

For XP I found the easiest way was to go into explorer and choose search

Click all files and folders
put limewire in the top box
click search.
EVERYTHING that comes up - Delete!

Close down your firewall in control panel.

Download and install limewire.

It worked for me after several attempts and frustration trawling through individual folders.

Incidently I have a Vista machine and LW worked fine. Maybe it is a XP SP3 issue.

/Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire

Windows:
C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire

Linux:
~/.limewire

Please shutdown any instance of LimeWire you may have running, delete the whole directory, and then restart LimeWire. You should be able to connect.

Not sure grumpygbp, I am aware LW has changed location for storing the LW download preferences but not sure if it is now in the preferences folder or not. See http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...downloads.html & check to see if that has affected you. You can go to the Library window, select incomplete folder & see if the files are listed inside. If they are, then select all of them & press Resume button.

The LW preferences are now within a 'hidden' folder. So you need to turn on Show All Hidden Files & Folders under view options when in the search window of your computer.

Don't forget to try these tips: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

These details will help us: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) :)

ashleysmitchell September 17th, 2008 06:09 PM

Where do I find this directory??

Lord of the Rings September 17th, 2008 09:05 PM

It's a hidden directory. Depends which system you're using.

C:\Documents and Settings\*yourusername*\Application Data\LimeWire

Application Data folder is HIDDEN. So when you use the search function, turn on Show All Hidden Files & Folders in View options. :)

Else for VISTA see http://www.gnutellaforums.com/genera...der-vista.html
