Doesn't appear to work for W2000, either. |
Hi u2509: Can you tell us what firewalls you use & about your connections devices: modem & router brand names & model numbers? Also tell us where you're connecting from: home school, work, etc,? |
no connection I just read through Lord of the Rings replies to Crash607 and I tried the tests that LOR gave Crash. The first test was successful but the second test, I got this result > initializing... Your local IP address is **.**.*.*** Your global IP address is <?=$REMOTE_ADDR?> It would appear that your machine does use NAT. Your machine has an IP address of ***.**.**.**, but your browser connected to this page from <?=$REMOTE_ADDR?>! You are in the private range: **.**.0.0 - **.**.255.255 (**.16/12 prefix) Can you tell me what that means? And is that the problem why I have not been able to connect lately? I have had Limewire for a few months now, but just recently I haven't been able to connect. Thank you... |
Hi yomamafoo: I edited your post b/c I don't think it's a good idea for others to see your ip address. It means that you have a modem & possibly a router as well that uses NAT. 1. Can you tell me the brand name(s) & model number(s) of your modem & router? Your equipment will need port forwarding to allow LW access thru a port b/c at present many of your ports are blocked. You will also need to set up an static ip. Instructions how to do both these things I'll give you when you tell me the answers to the above questions. 2. Also which OS version do you use? 3. Also where are you connecting from: home, school, work, etc.? |
can you also edit my guest 111 post too? because earlier i wasnt a member and i posted my ip address...sorry i didnt know... my modem- 3Com 3C900B-TPO Ethernet Adapter (Generic) im at school and i use my local area connection |
oh yeah i am also using a window xp |
I couldn't find specific instructions for your model but the others listed on the follwoing page wilol probably be almost identical. Perhaps try the 3com 3C857 Port Forward instructions (top left column for 3com) & also see the link for creating a static ip which you'll need to forward a port properly otherwise this no. will always change each time you connect to the net/restart the comp. Just click on the model name in brown text & on the following page select Port Forwarding instructions. After this you will need to force ip within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image which will be the easiest part. If you're using Windows update your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link) (though I have a suspicion you use a mac right?) Here's some hints for optimising LW: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. Good luck! ;) |
Win XP, so did you install SP2? I hope not, you don't need it b/c it was not designed for individual home users! And sp2 reduces connectivity to the net & also changes all your firewall settings back to default. To configure XP & other firewalls to allow LW acces see here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml (other firewall types are at bottom of page.) |
i did force the ip and i do have java 1.4.2 but let me try that first link that you gave me ill write back and let you know |
no i didnt install sp2 |
thank you lord of the rings i'm working on the port forwarding right now....i probably wont be able to tell you until a little later... |
still cannot connect . . . or disconnect! Still not working. My subject line is not exactly correct, though. I CAN "connect," according to the File menu. However, no searches work due to "not (being) connected to the network." The only way for me to disconnect is to use ctrl-alt-del. Please advise. (I've already deleted the file I was advised to delete.) Thanks~ P.S. Using XP Home. New computer. Cable modem. |
Hi tamicee: You will need to do a number of things for me. 1. Uninstall LW using your Add/Remove control panel. 2. Update your installshield install engine. 2. Update your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link) 3. Try dwnlding & installing LW again. There is a new version just released today (LW 4.2.4) & choose the english version HERE! LW 4.2.4 (click on link) Questions: 1. Can you tell me all the firewalls you have? You will need to configure them to allow LW access. See instructions here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml 2. Can you tell me what modem & if any router you use: What's the brand name & model number? 3. Advice: Do NOT install SP2 (Windows XP Service Pack 2) b/c it's only intended for big companies with major networks not for home users. SP2 can reduce your connectivity to the net. And you don't need it! It would only cause you headaches! |
Nixie, do you have several copies of LW on different comps or just one copy? (I figure it's the latest) |
Downloads I dont think we have downloaded any new software which may cause a problem. I already have the Java update. We do have a router - I couldnt find the make but the model is ASR 8100. Its an ADSL router. We used to all be able to connect to Limewire Pro but now nobody can and it stopped connecting people at different stages. I was the last one who was able to connect now i cant. Any ideas? Nikki |
Programs We all have different programs. I have an older version - 4.0.8. The others I think have new. Thats why I find it so odd that we all can not conect as Ive been using mine for a while now. Also I have not downloaded SP2. Nikki |
Nixie155: Your Router does use NAT which can block many ports. I don't have specific instructions though how to allow LW access by using port forwarding. I did find this however: http://www.adsltech.com/faq/ 2/3 way down the page it discusses about setting up a static ip which yo need for port forwarding & further down a bit is about forwarding a range of ports. All you need to do is forward a single port: 6346 & if necessary add the application name (some routers have that option.) Then you can force ip within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image Doing these things will clear a way for LW. Do you use your modem in ethernet or USB connection. Wisest is ethernet. It's not only faster but many USB routers suffer 2 problems: 1.obtain power from comp. 2. utilise comp's processing power thus draining your comp of 'some' speed. |
question about the port forward it wont let any hackers or viruses come through will it? will my computer be more vulnerable? |
Hackers go for the lower port no.'s according to what I've read. There's particular favourites of theirs. It could take me some time to find the article to show you. Keep your firewalls up, keep your antispy & adaware apps going. If you need any links to any just say. I have never heard of LW users being targeted. And they'd need to find the right port anyway. There's how many hundred thousand ports for them to try. Whatever. I believe you'll be safe. You have a nat router to keep them out. Some nat routers actually allow you to specify the particular app that's allowed to pass; much like a firewall. |
Thanks worked a treat |
Thanks Lord of the Rings! I seem to be back up and running. I had to search for all instances of LW, THEN remove. (I should have known that.) The two other programs/updates you suggested I download didn't work. I believe I have the latest versions of both. (You suggested "2. Update your installshield install engine. 2. Update your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)" ) All is well, thanks to you. Oh, yes. I removes SP2, based on your information. Thanks, again, tamicee :-D |
Help I cannot connect at all lime wire is installed I am unable to find the file to delete the preferences please help. |
neo20201: Quote: "I had to search for all instances of LW, THEN remove. (I should have known that.)" Do a search for .limewire That's the folder that you can try deleting. |
help!!! I cannot connect at all I am not sure how to disable the firewalls to connect aswell I did try to delet the prefrences and I was unable to locate the prefrence with the location given. Thanks In advance for your help |
I did that and it will connect for a second then disconnect. What can I do? |
Give LW some time. Leave it perhaps 30 - 60 mins to allow it sufficient time to settle. Firewall instructions can be found here to allow LW access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml So which firewalls do you have? What OS version do you use (wind 98, etc.)? Just in case: May I ask what modem & router brand names & model numbers you have? Also where are you connecting from (home, school, work, etc.)? |
It has worked for me. Connection OK ! |
Im running LW on XP HE and I was having the same connection problem as everyone else but I seem to have fixed that but now when i search for a song it returns no results for every song i search for. Anyone know any way to fix this?? Thanks |
new user Looking through the forums, I seem to have the same problem many are having. I connect for a second or two and then it disconnects. I followed the instructions concerning the firewall, but it still doesn't work. I'm on XP. Any easement of my frustrations will be greatly appreciated. |
I`ve a question. If I Try to search for a song or a artist, LW says "there`s no connection to the Internet, but there is definitely a connectio with it. Also the button "You have no connection to the network" is showed, so what can I do ? A few days earlier it worked. |
connection problems i tried to find and delet my preferences file. It does not exist. I launch lime wire (osX), and it says "connecting". I get 1 green bar. Nothing happens. I just purchased lime wire pro. |
For OSX preferences are found here: /Users/your_username/Library/Preferences/LimeWire 1. Can you tell us about your setup. 2. What brand name & model number(s) of modem/router do you have? 3. Where are you connecting from (home, school, work, etc.)? 4. Do you have any firewalls? Firewalls & many high speed modems which have a type of internal firewall might be blocking LW from having 'full' access. These questions apply to both limewirerookie & astrodog !!! ;) |
win 98 help Hello all, I have read through a lot of these posts and have tried all Ideas that i can find and still cannot connect. here is all the info that I know about my system and what I have tried. + I am running win 98. + I connect with wireless. (there is a antana up on the roof with recever made by "Teletronics International Inc" it says EZBridge ID 11-208, sn00006361. This reciever connects to a small black box 2" x 2" at the back of my computer then plugs into my ethernet card. There is no markings at all on little black box. + I have 1.6 gig left on a 12 gig hd + I use Zone Alarm as firewall + I use MSN for ISP Here is what I have tried: + I just downloaded LW yesterday so I should have the most recent ver. + I updated my Java + Changed setting on Zone Alarm to allow Limewire.(Zone Alarm dosent list Java as a program trieng to access internet and I know Ihave read that it is one I needed to allow in ZA?) + I tried closing out of LW totally, then tried to find the LW prop. dir. but couldnt, so I deleted the LW file in Windows, then reopened no: connection so I wnet back in and file was there again? so I opened it and deleted all things that said .prop. still didnt work. + I tried unchecking the box in the tip box. still no connection. + I tried it without shereing files and it didnt work. + Im not super knowlageable about computers so I dont want try the port forwarding thing cause I tend to do more damage than I started with! Please help, I havent slept for 32 hrs, almost fell off the roof tring to get ant. info for this post, and I think Im going crazy. Thank you, Mike |
Evertime you delete the LW preferences called .limewire, LW will create a new set as soon as you open it. It holds info such as about our Tools>Options settings so everytime you delete the prefs you'll need to reset these. You can try: Force IP instructions & sample image within LW. Go to this webite & tell us what happens (it should say test page was successful): http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ You will need to double-check your zone-alarm. It's been known to cause problems & sometimes unpredictable ones for p2p. |
Re: win 98 help Quote:
nobody should ever EVER tell you that you're lazy. |
connection OS 10.3 None of the above works. Can't take any more wasted time. |
1. Windows 2000 Professional 2. 768kbps Cable, Cox Communications 3. LimeWire Free Edition, 4.2.6 I've tried everything in this damn forum, and not one helps. Btw, in case it wasn't answered for some people: Windows 98 / ME: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents" Windows NT 4.0 / 2000 / XP: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\Documents and Settings\Username" |
Are you aware of problems with Cox? See this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...&highlight=cox 1. What firewalls you have, 2. ram, 3. HDD space available, 5. Connection type, 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers Yes these xtra details can help. Further to the 1st note about Cox I just did a quick search: http://www.broadbandreports.com/shownews/56054 & also Google results about Cox's pain inflicting I've read articles myself over the past couple of months but hadn't made any note about them. |
HELP!!! Can't connect I run on MAC OS 9 and up until two days ago my free limewire was running beautiful. I couldn't connect today at all so I bought the pro. Then I came here, dowloaded the MRJ 2.2.5, reinstalled the software several times, deleted the preferences file .limewire. I connect via cable and again through a router. Router is a wirless-G 2.4 GH Linksys is the brand. I'm kind of stupid when it comes to the router as I have been on a hub up til about a week ago. I MISS MY LIMEWIRE <<<<BOOO HOOO>>>> Can ANYONE help me?? Please. |
Can't Connect I too run Mac OS 9.2 I haven't been able to connect and it's really getting me pee'd off. |
still off Yes, still down. I called the ISP yesterday and they suggested that I plug directly into the computer. I did. Nothing. I trashed my cookies. I uninstalled and reinstalled Limewire many times all to no avail. I am beginning to wonder if it might be mostly related to the system 9 and before. Most software that I researched for f2f is written for X and now I am thinking that we are getting weeded out. It's so great, Limewire, that is. I hope that it is just my issue and when I finally have the funds to upgrade. I will be back! |
Hi mac chick, can you tell us the actual model number of your Linksys? They generally have a type of internal firewall called NAT which reduces LW's capability to connect. We can show you how to forward a port (open a port to allow LW 100% access) if you give us the model number??? Also disregard Macs advice about Java & update to Java MRJ 2.2.6 http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120209 (see this link for tips : click me!!!) Here's some more hints: A well set-up LW can start to automatically continue its dwnlding after it's settled down perhaps 2 out of 3 times you open LW. Optimising LW & Maximising Uplds & Dwnlds A (1st post only) & also Part B which is even better & last & least are search & dwnld hints. The latter one I've been thinking about re-writing for some time. That's just for playing it safe. eg- I show all speeds & qualities. |
LOR to the Rescue... I'm so glad you responded as you seem to know so much about this stuff. Wish you were sitting in my office with me! Anyway, here is the model number: WRT546 ver. 2 but DO remember that I tried to go right from the computer as well to see if that was the cause... it didn't work. I will LOVE YOU forever if you can help me get back on!!! :) |
So you're connecting from work? Your modem-router is a wireless router. I don't have specific instructions for your particular model but, I can direct you to other linksys models some of which are probably similar (see bottom of page - 2nd row from left & probably liik at othre wrt models): http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm & use port 6346 Make sure you setup a static ip 1st: http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm You will also need to force ip within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image |
I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I had to do was make the changes in Limewire under the options. DUH!!! It's working great now!!!!! LORD OF THE RINGS SHOULD BE PAID!!!!!!!!!! You made my day. Thank you so much. |
trying your hint Still not connected despite my internet connection vie Internet Explorer. I'll keep trying! Very frustrating to buy something and then the #!* thing doesn't work! |
This stinks! Still unable to connect!!! Have been trying for 35 minutes! |
kcratliff why don't you regiyter as a member on the forum so you (& we) can find your posts & responses more easily. Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version, 2. What firewalls you have, 3. ram, 4. HDD space available, 5. Connection type, 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers, 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is. |
Hi Group I have been trying to get LimeWire to connect nearly all day. My configuration now is: Win XP SP2 - new clean install TCP/IP re-connection atemps is not at 50 Draytek router 2600VG is forwarding port 6346 to my pc on tcp and udp. Avast AV turned off XP Firewall turned off My isp (BICSit.net) assures me that they are not filtering anything. LimeWire still won't connect. I have searched these forums but I am now lost for any more ideas. Am I a lost cause? Chris |
You'll need to forward a port for your router: Port Forwarding instructions for the Draytek Vigor 260 & use Port 6346 Make sure you set up a static ip 1st, instruction link in the previous link. You'll also need to force ip within LW: Force IP instructions & sample image Make sure your Java is reasonably up to date: Java 1.4.2 (click on link) Configure your firewalls here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml |
