probs connecting with win 98

Hi all. I am only new to all this and reasonably illeterate when it comes to pc's. I downloaded l/w this am and experienced the kinda probs u have all referred to. I read most pages of this forum and pieced together this bit of advice.
1) i closed down l/w completely before trying the folder delete thing as suggested.
2) Located the folder vis "find" in the start up menu. Deleted it.
3) Still experienced probs but then went up to "file" on the l/w interface and clicked disconnect during it "trying" to connect.
4) I then clicked "connect" and within seconds found that it had connected to a "fair" reception.

I am not sure if this is a perm or temp solution as i wasnt game to shut it down now I got it working but will keep u informed.

Used Command prompt for jar file but don't think it ran. Got "NoSuchMethodError". Jar file have to be in same location as LW preferences folder? Preferences are deleted, can't connect. Connected yesterday with and w/o firewall. Using XP.

stringbean October 29th, 2004 01:41 AM

hi again!!!

ok i have found l/wire to be a VERY good place to d/l music. In addition to the "fix" that has worked for me I also found that if I do not have a "good' connection or connection is "poor" if u "disconnect" from file menu and then click on "reconnect" it works like a DREAM!!!
By the way...if you are thinking of giving up and not bothering like I almost was....DONT! It is well worth the perserverance!!!!!!

murasame October 30th, 2004 03:05 AM

People. I personally suggest that you always update your version. 4.1.7 has, for the moment had the best connection overall (almost always Turbocharged and connects in an instant.).

stuffit November 1st, 2004 07:51 PM

I connected

when I downloaded limewire, I couldn't get connected either.

so I closed it completely then delete it. Then I opened the folder to where it was downloaded and started all over again.

It works beautiful.

Try it.:D

Please tell me how to find my preferences directory. I went to the C drive, but can't find it! Help!! I have XP!

bird November 7th, 2004 06:04 PM

is there not a number I can call

Is there a number I can call for support . . . this is getting ridiculous. Thanks for your time. How do I get my money back if there is not?

Lord of the Rings November 7th, 2004 10:27 PM

Your LW prefs can be found here: Windows: C:/Documents And Settings/your_username/.limewire
Delete the folder called .limwire
Have read this thread yet? In particular read page 1 & the previous page or two. Then tell us your results. If you have a problem, you need to detail your specifications of OS, connection type & devices & whereabouts (home, school, work, etc.), & gives us details about your problem. By the way, this is not LW Support. This is a forum mostly run by volunteers who are simply experienced LW users.

dburnham November 9th, 2004 02:16 PM

Nothing seems to work

I can't tell you how many times I have deleted preferences from the User's library/preferences and from the system's library/preferences and I've downloaded the 10.3.6 Combo update and I've repaired or rebuilt permissions ... and it still does the same damn thing. On launch, it gets as far as showing me the dialog about tips and it crashes.

I'm writing this in response to the LimeWire support person who asked for feedback ... the thing that makes me hopping mad is how I've paid for the Pro version twice and while I wait months and months for you to not just fix it but even ANSWER your email, the 6-month period has elapsed and I can't even use the software I paid for.

It is a despicable way of doing business.

dburnham November 9th, 2004 03:17 PM

NO WAY -- IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK

Deleting all Limewire pref files, even the one that has the gnutella name in it, rebooting in safe mode and rebuilding permissions, none of it works. I have done everything except stand on my head in rush hour traffic. This thing simply refuses to do anything but launch and crash.

You can tell people time and again to be sure they have deleted all their prefs and it doesn't make any difference. Even creating a new user with a fresh system doesn't make any difference.

LW launches and immediately crashes, and there doesn't seem to be anybody who has an authoritative answer about why it happens or what to do to remedy it ... except keep on paying every 6 months and cross your fingers.

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 03:36 PM

Hi dburnham I'm sorry to hear about your problems. you can use your pro version as long as you like but the support does run out after 6 mths. It would be handy if you registered as a member of this site so I could PM you. In the meantime see: This page in reference to OSX issues (click on link) So which LW version are you using? Are you firewalled at all? What type of connection do you have? How many OS's are you running? When you installed OSX did you install the BSD system. BSD is important for LW's functioning.

Adam john 223344 November 9th, 2004 06:16 PM

i tried this method after trying every other one and to my surprise it actually worked

good job

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2004 06:18 PM

Thank you. Which one worked? Which method did you use?

slin November 11th, 2004 10:00 AM

possible solution

I had the same problems you are posting.
I just downloaded Java 1.4.2 Update 2 seperate from the OS 10.3.6 combo << http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...update142.html>>and my LW now works fine.
Phew!

wingman358 November 16th, 2004 02:13 PM

for all of you who still can't connect... just disable "auto-connect" in the options menu under the "connections" tab. shut-down LW (make sure its not running in the tray) and restart LW. go to the file menu and then "connect" it worked for me on windows xp pro

bt4593 November 17th, 2004 12:35 PM

Excellent! I was pulling my hair out and now it works after doing it.

tmutiger November 21st, 2004 02:34 AM

I dunno if it's only me, but my problem with OS X was the system preferences/network settings on my Mac. Under TCP/IP my configure settings were on DHCP. Once I changed it to manual & entered all the IP's, masks, routers and so on... by hand it started to work fine.

good luck,...

DavidGene November 22nd, 2004 01:14 AM

Hello, I'm new to LimeWire. We downloaded and installed LimeWire 3.6.15 last week. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition. I also have installed the Norton Internet Security application.

I'm having connection problems, and rather than read through 29 pages of this thread, I wondered if someone could just summarize what I need to do to connect.

The LimeWire application appears to come up fine. Clicking on the connection option brings the green light on for just a second. I have already checked my Norton firewall settings, dumped my limewire preferences file once already, and switched off the auto connect feature. Still no luck connecting.

Thanks for the help.

Lord of the Rings November 22nd, 2004 08:52 PM

DavidGene: Just to double-check your firewalls including XP see here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Update to the latest Java: Java 1.5 (take the JRE) b/c LW is designed with Java, & runs on Java.

If you're still having problems can you please tell us about your connection setup. What modem & router brand name & model no.'s?

You said you dwnlded LW 3.6.15, but why that version? LW 4.2.2 was released a couple days ago & LW 4.0 has been around for 6 months.

By the way, the 1st post on page 1 was the most important. This thread is going to be edited/replaced with an updated version soon.

Hi there,
I've got WIN XP Pro (disabled firewall)
DI-604 router (opened up port 6699)
Connects at poor and then disconnects and same thing again.
Don't know what the prob might be...i have a cable connection(ussualy download around 250-300kb/s).
Any help would be appreciated! :D

Lord of the Rings November 23rd, 2004 12:36 AM

Why port 6699? Your DI-604 is a linksys isn't it? Is it a modem or a router or both. From what I could find it's just a router which suggests you have a separate modem.

Anyway, whichever port you choose (LW is set to use port 6346) you will have to set LW to use the same port or vice versa. You will also need to Force IP. See Force IP instructions & sample image And also set theat same port number under LW's port option (see Tools>Options>Advanced> & both Port & Firewall

See how you go. :)

groove2love November 23rd, 2004 11:59 AM

I runing xp professionalwith windows firewall turn off usingMcAfee Internet Security Suite version 6.0: I installed the English version, which wouldn't open are connect. So I uninstalled the English version of LimeWere and installed the international version of LimeWire, which connects and dowloads just fine. This may be of some help to Windows XP users.

gohanultrassj6 November 23rd, 2004 01:21 PM

I've changed the ports to limewire's original and changed it in router options as well. And my router is a DLink DI-604. Still doesn't work. I have the pro version as well, shouldn't that be faster?

Lord of the Rings November 23rd, 2004 01:28 PM

Did you use these instructions: Port Forwarding for the Dlink DI-604 & also see other DI-604 issues OR the Port Forwarding for the Dlink DI-604 version 2 Make sure you have a static ip otherwise it won't work next time you use it. Also, make sure you save the settings & reboot your modem. I also have a DLink but different model. If possble use port 6346 for port settings.

mac os8.6 connection issues

Just upgraded to Limewire Pro 4.02 after not using Limewire for a year or so. Running Mac classic 8.6. After startup, I am apparently not connected, although the "disconnect" option is available under the file menu heading. selecting "disconnect" however does nothing. I tried your suggestion of shutting the application down and dumping the limewire preferences folder. Upon restarting the application, it wlked me through my preference settings.
Help!

Lord of the Rings November 25th, 2004 03:23 AM

Hi yourdaddy
Update your Java to MRJ 2.2.5 for OS 8.1-9.2 Even if you already have it, it won't do any harm installing it again. Doing so can often do the trick. And THIS POST is worth reading

Yes if you delete your LW prefs you will need to reset all your LW settings. So it's generally a good idea to make a note of them before you trash the prefs.

After installing new softw in mac comp's it's always a good idea to re-build your desktop; ie: hold down both the Command (/Apple)+Option keys whilst you restart the comp. Also have you checked your comp over with Disk 1st Aide & defragmented your HDD?

What connection devices do you use? What brand name & model number of modem & router do you use?

You said you hadn't used LW for a year. Do you still have incomplete files left over from that time? These files might have become stale. The days to complete incomplete option setting in your Options>Saving might mean your incomplete files have become redundant.

izzy6 November 28th, 2004 04:05 AM

At last - I'm connected!!

I'm using Win 98. Went to Options (under tools) took out "connect on startup" and opted for "shutdown immediately", went back to the search area and found I had a green light, and seems all is now OK.;) ;)

rifleboy101 November 28th, 2004 04:52 AM

still doesn't work

I've tried everything that has been suggested and none of it works! I have windows XP HE and i am on a network at university...When i first started using limewire it worked perfectly fine (after i had added the Gnutella ports etc.) but then it suddenyl decided to...not work! No idea how to solve, any help would be great so it won't feel as though I've used my limited student budget for nothing!

Hello all.

I have tried the many suggestions you have posted regarding connection problems. My situation is a little different I think than the others. I am using windows xp home, and when I try to use limewire I only get one connection bar, two if I'm really lucky. However my husband has no problems under his user screen. He gets a turbo connection right away, and I keep being told i'm behind a firewall or not connected to the internet. I configured my zonealarm as recomended, checked to make sure windows firewall is not on, and followed the directions to delete my user settings, not allow auto connect, etc.

I don't understand why he has no problem and I do. We are sharing from the same folder, which I set up under all users for our easy access in xp. We are sharing close to 800 files in that folder. Can someone please help me figure out why limewire doesn't like me.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

m-27 November 29th, 2004 09:07 AM

cant connect either

Hello, I tried your ideal of deletting the folder you told us to delete at the start of this thread and it works. The only thing is i have to do this every time I start lm. Is thier a download or somesort of fix so we dont have to keep doing this all the time. getting old. Thanks

murasame November 29th, 2004 09:55 AM

Hey Kag, you're using a router, right?

eldutton November 29th, 2004 12:19 PM

still can't connect

I tried what you said to do and I still can't get it to connect. I payed for kazaa lite and part of the downloading is to choose a server and I choose limewire and now I can't get it to connect to the server and I can't download anything

Please help!!!!!!

Liz

Lord of the Rings November 29th, 2004 08:38 PM

Hi eldutton
Your method of getting Limewire (LW) sounds a little suspicious. Did you actually pay for LW? Did you get it from here?: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/home.shtml

So tell us about your system & setup: What OS version (eg- Windows 98), what connection type & devices (ie: What modem brand name & model number? eg: D-Link 604G; Where are you conncecting from (home, school, work, etc.)?

eldutton November 30th, 2004 03:11 PM

re: can't connect

I went to Kazaa lite.com and in order to get it I had to pay 39.99 and after I payed it came up with a list of downloads such as Limewire, bearshare, morphous, etc. I have a friend who has limewire so I thought ok I will use it, so I downloaded it and it won't connect and stay green.

I run off of windows xp with a wireless card.I think it is an atheros card. I don't have internet at home so I hook up at the university I go to.

Thanks

tamicee November 30th, 2004 04:48 PM

I cannot even disconnect. I closed it out, though, by using the X. Then I deleted the entire folder. I am still connected and cannot disconnect AND I cannot get anywhere. When I hit search, I receive a msg. saying I am "not connected to the network."
Hmmm.

generation November 30th, 2004 06:42 PM

This worked awsome

Thank you much! This is just fine.....do to my firewall issues

Nixie155 December 1st, 2004 10:27 AM

House hold

Me and my house mates all use Limewire as our download station but recently none of use have been able to get connected. I was curious to see whether it was something internal with limewire that has gone down.

nikki

Lord of the Rings December 1st, 2004 01:47 PM

Nixie155: There's no central server on the Gnutella network. It's simply sharing b/w you, me & others. Have a think about anything you've installed recently on your system(s). Hope you didn't install SP2 b/c you don't need it & it may cause you big headaches! Do you lot use a router? If so what brand name & model no. is it? Many Routers block many ports for incoming.

Try updating your Java: Java 1.4.2 (click on link)
