i seriously need help. i had limewire basic for about 5 months, from february to june, and then i tried to download pro. for the next month, it just wouldnt connect. i tried everything that everyone suggested to no avail. i finally just gave up when even here nobody really helped me. im trying again now starting with pro. i dont even know if it will connect because when i try to open it it says "Limewire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking Limewire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow Limewire access to the internet and restart Limewire." i dont know what to do since this is still popping up with the firewall up. if someone could help me even open it, thatd be great. thanks a lot. oh and heres the info about my computer.

1. OS version?: windows xp
2. What firewalls you have? netgear 108 mps
3. How much ram? 504 MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 34.8 GB
5. Connection type?: cable modem
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? RCA DCM 315
7. Where are you trying to connect from? home
8. What version of Limewire & Java do you have?: Limewire Pro 4.9.23, Java 1.4.2_05
9. Who is your isp provider? Earthlink Cable through TimeWarner
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.: new problem, have had it for almost 6 months, it worked perfectly until I tried to switch to Pro, first problemsabout a month ago, gave up on it after about a week, then tried again.

Connection problems

I have read and tried some of your suggestions to my connection problems but none of them have worked. I just downloaded limewire today and it seems for some time now people have been having connection problems. I am very upset because i just paid for a service that i cant use. Please help.

Lord of the Rings August 19th, 2005 05:54 PM

It's sometimes best to delete your LW preferences after upgrading to Pro; Fixes for Limewire

I've just been to the Netgear support site & there is no model of that name, 108 mps is simply the maximun capacity of a no. of their devices. Does your modem/router have a UPnP option or ability?

Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) Do this for XP's firewall.

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

Kels August 19th, 2005 06:07 PM

I have already changed my firewall. I followed the directions. When i try that test, it tells me the page cant be displayed.

Lord of the Rings August 19th, 2005 06:15 PM

That suggests your router is the issue. But before we move onto that. (After all, LW worked for you before!) Let's try some different ports for LW to use. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port to something else & press the apply button. Here's some other ports you can try: 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 80, 20282, 10000, 443, 40475.

After changing the port, you can do a port test here (but LW must be open at the same time!!!): http://home.no.net/tgrumpy/ct/dex.php & type in the port no. you changed LW to listen to.

Kels August 19th, 2005 06:28 PM

What is Shareeza? How do i get it and why do i need it? I am very confused and aggravated.

Lord of the Rings August 19th, 2005 06:33 PM

It's a port test page. It's used for the Shareaza program that's all. But that's the only other port test page I'm aware of to test ports other than port 6346. So did you get any decent results? Alternatively forward a port on your device. http://kbserver.netgear.com/main.asp or http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Connection problems

i am sorry, i am still completely confused. I just downloaded limewire today and it has never worked for me. I do not understand why this is such a complicated process. I dont mean to sound rude, but already I am not happy and how can i contact someone about getting a refund? This has not worked for me and i am very unsatisfied that i have to go through so many things to get this program to work. I know its not your fault but I have never had so many problems.

ultracross August 19th, 2005 07:33 PM

@ Kels, where did you get your copy of LimeWire? read below \/

Kels August 19th, 2005 07:56 PM

i downloaded my version from www.Limewire-Software.com Is that a different company from www.limewire.com? If so, how can i dispute the $28.00 charge to my credit card?

Lord of the Rings August 19th, 2005 08:00 PM

Well, what's happened is you've paid for the free version of LW. So you've got LW Basic which is free. LW Pro costs $18.88 However, some scam sites do use a clone of LW. So I don't know which one you have. See http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1 If you purchased it recently then cancel the transaction & tell your C/Card co it was a scam site. Be very careful b/c some sites charge you every mth or 6 mths. Known Scam Sites

I'd suggest you go to the official LW site & downld the proper version: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml

Kels August 20th, 2005 12:38 PM

Connection problems

I am still having trouble. I created a port or whatever it is for Gnutella to get around my windows xp firewall. Then i tried the port test page and i failed the UDP part. So then i followed the directions and created a port or whatever for Shareaza. The problem is that the directions for both told me to give the port the number 6346 and it wouldnt allow me to have 2 different ports with the same number. What do i do now? Also, i went through all the steps and created shareaza but how do i check to see if it is using the right port and change the settings if necessary?

wait so I just delete that whole folder or do I have to delete something in that folder?

Lord of the Rings August 21st, 2005 01:54 PM

The whole folder. It is possible to delete certain files within, but it is easier to delete the whole folder. Next time you open LW, it will ask you to reset the option which will recreate a fresh preferences folder anew. At the bottom of the following link the giF images show you what to do: Fixes for Limewire

Urgent help required
I have recently bought a new pc with xp (sp2) with the set up as below. Prior to that I was running with a 64MB cart horse and had a good relationship with LW (no problem with isp) no problems encountered.

Now I have tried both 4.8 and 4.9 LW, manually dowloaded the latest Java (as advised by this forum). My firewall is configured correctly. All checks and tests are positive. When I run LW I get as far as the "loading user interface" screen and when asked for the download folder selection and I select "Browse" the whole thing stalls. It is using 100% of my CPU at this time.

Description of my set up:
1. OS version? XP (SP2)
2. What firewalls you have? Zonealarm
3. How much ram? 512MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 64GB
5. Connection type? broadband
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? DSL-210
7. Where are you trying to connect from: home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? 4.8 (have also tried 4.9) / Java 2 standard 1.5.0 (2005)
9. Who is your isp provider? CAT (Thailand)
10. This is a new problem with an experienced user.

I was a regular user of LW and badly need it back. Please your best advice for a fix is urgently needed.

Help

Hello everyone. Need some help and info.

Sorry for the repost. I was trying to keep it in this forum, but kept creating new threads.

What is the difference between www.kazaa.com and www.kazza.com? ... why is one free and the other one charges. I have down-loaded both and neither seem to work.

From www.kazza.com I downloaded limewire (paid over $40) but have not yet made it work. Although I tried some of the remedies posted here (with my little knowledge of computers).

Description of my set up:
1. OS version? XP
2. What firewalls you have? StopZilla
3. How much ram? 512MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 150GB
5. Connection type? cable/DSL
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? (Linksys/2wire)
7. Where are you trying to connect from: home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? 4.8.1
9. Who is your isp provider? SBC Yahoo
10. First time user.
11. I also use Norton Anit-virus protection

I also get a dialogue box saying my audio itune does not work.

Any help to get them limwire and kazaa working would be much appreciated.

scubagal August 26th, 2005 08:41 PM

It worked for me. I know what I did wrong. When I chose a d/l, I got a dialog that a license was not found and did I want to continue. i put a check in the box that said always use this answer and then clicked no.

Lord of the Rings August 27th, 2005 03:17 AM

lion67 I think you should see this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...5&pagenumber=1
Chances are you paid $40 for the LW Basic version which is FREE from the official LW site: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
www.kazza.com? sounds & looks like a scam site! For a start, LW no longer offers version 4.8.1 & hasn't for some time! Both those links took me to the same site.

Disable your XP firewall: go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box.
Configure your StopZilla by allowing LimeWire full access in the firewall rules.

Are you sure your Norton is only an AV program & not also have a firewall option?

Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

(BTW yeoldesage solved their problem by installing Java 1.4.2 instead (after uninstalling 1.5.) Communicated via pm.)

Then configure your Norton firewall using this: *Configuring Norton Internet Security

Your Linksys router should have a UPnP switch. Make sure it is enabled!

After doing these things, open LW then do the port test again: Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ to see if anything has changed.

DDrew571 you haven't provided us with enough details about your set up to work with.

The link works now, but I still cannot connect. There is no UPnP switch on my router. (I looked for a loooong time.) As for the Norton, the instructions you provided do not match the version of Norton I have. Here is a screenshot of what I have compaired to what you provided. It is probably my fault for calling it the wrong name.

Oh, and windows firewall is off.

Grandpa August 27th, 2005 10:41 PM

You do have norton symatec and norton are the same. You may need to port forward your router. I also have a linksys and sometimes UPnP works and sometimes it doesn't. There is no switch. follow the instructions in the link below for port fowarding.

http://portforward.com/

Um. Yikes. Thats alot of stuff there... I really don't want to read an entire site that looks to be 40+ pages of stuff. Is there something a little easier? I looked at it a bit and I narrowed it down to Limewire and my Lynksys router number: BEFW11S4

http://portforward.com/english/route...4/Limewire.htm

I'm A+ certified, so you don't have to put it in complete laymens terms, but I really don't think it is nescessary to read that entire site.

Grandpa August 28th, 2005 12:08 AM

Ok go to the 1st link and follow the instructions for setting up a static IP address.

Then go to the second link and follow the instructions.

This is assuming you gave the right router model there are several BEFW11S4 models. I can not make it any simpler than this so don't ask.

http://portforward.com/english/route...4/Limewire.htm

Lord of the Rings August 28th, 2005 07:36 AM

The instructions at portforward.com are very good. But if you're confused then you can use the following as a guide. 1. Setting up a Static ip instructions from Linksys support site & 2. Port forwarding instructions from Linksys support

And don't forget to do this last of all; within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

Thanks, thats much easier, but I'm stuck on the very first part. admin//admin doesn't work, and neither does my login name and password. I also tried administrator//administrator.

Grandpa August 28th, 2005 11:09 AM

Oops somebody has changed the password this is not good are you the original owner of the router.

echo2347 August 29th, 2005 03:40 PM

Ill have to look into it more, my father may have changed it when it was hooked to a different computer in our house or something. Is there a way to manually reset it?

Oh, and no one else uses my computer. Or knows how to use it, for that matter.

Grandpa August 29th, 2005 04:53 PM

I do not know of a way to reset the password on the router if someone has put in a new password only they can change it. Admin is the default password and if that doesn't work then someone has changed it.

Grandpa September 23rd, 2005 01:18 PM

It appears you have a firewall blocking you or your Internet service provider has started blocking p2p networks. I gust tried all the links they are all good you may need to reset your browser settings to default if you are using Internet explorer go to tools/Internet options/Advanced/click on restore default then apply then try the links again and do the test and suggestions in them.

johnny sixpack September 25th, 2005 03:29 PM

GRRRRrrrrrr

I have been through these forums tryinfig to find a fix for limewire but I still keep getting "LimeWire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire.". I have done the enabling of Gnutella ports on the control panel. And I have disabled Windows firewall, I have Norton internetworm protection on and I checked to make sure that javaw was on the "Permit All" list and it was. I have no Idea of what other direction to work in. Everytime I try to load LimeWire a prompt comes up from Norton Internet Worm Protection stating the it has detected a remote system trying to access my computer. It asks me if I want to permit it to allow access to the internet even though I click ok to permit I still get the same messege.

I have:
LIMEWIRE BASIC v 4.9.30
Microsoft Windows XP Home 2002sp2 (came with the system hate it)
Intel P4 1.8ghz
256RAM
Motorola Cable modem Comcast Broadband
Norton Anti Virus w/ InternetWorm Protection
I have disabled Windows Firewall
I share no connections
My test did work
I can't do the true false test LimeWire won't open
I also have good speed on my tests
I have also deleted my preferences.

Get Limewire at the link below it is the official link and clean I do not know if the one you are using is clean or not. If the Norton notice comes up with it you are going to have to disable Norton until after you get limewire connected the you can start it back up.

I have done absolutely everything to try and get limewire to work on my home computer. Bottom line is Limewire worked fine, wonderful and I loved it!!! until I paid $18.88 to upgrade to pro.....and then updated to a "newer" better version. Limewire 4.8.1 was great and I still have it on my computer at work and do not have any problems. Needless to say I have never updated to the "newer" version on my work computer. I thank all of you for your help and suggestions but none of them work for me and it is a pain to keep installing and uninstalling and etc, etc etc etc. I will just use the old version on my work computer and take this as a learning experience. Like the old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!! I do appreciate the help.

Check other thread

I posted a detailed fix for this problem in another thread. THe problem is this: Limewire cannot connect to the Gnutella network if it doesn't know any Limewire peers. The peers in standard release of Limewire are not active. They might be, but it didnt work for me.

The developers changed the location of the gnutella.net file in the latest limewire versions. In the 4.9.31 version, there is NO .limewire directory.

To fix older versions of limewire, go to the .limewire directory and add some peers in the gnutella.net file. Fine my other post and you will see a list of about 35 webcahes that will get you connected.

A help would be to know where the .limewire directory is in the releases.
