Yay

sdaswani I don't know if you're still around, but I could just hug you right now.

You have just given me a fix to my limewire in 20 seconds that 3 hours of probing around in deep firewall/ports/technical crap couldn't.

Thank you so much.:)

After you deleted the folder, did you have to go through LW's setup wizard again?

Connection problem on Desktop and not laptop

OK, first time post. Hope someone can help with this. Tried most of the solutions posted here but nothing works. So here goes....

Laptop is DELL 8600 running LW 4.8.0 & Java 1.6.0_05, Desktop (built-from-scratch) is running LW 4.8.0 & Java 1.6.0_06. Both have Windows Security on, both have Limewire checked as an exception. Both PCs have AVG Security Firewall Installed with default options. Limewire and AVG Security installed in default directories. All options match each other on both systems.

Limewire runs as an UltraPeer on the laptop and refuses to connect on the desktop. (I even added TCP and UDP ports to desktop and switched between UPNP and Manual Port Forward).

Also tried the fix mentioned above to delete the .limewire directory from C:\Documents and Settings\myname\Limewire. I do not have auto-start selected and do not load limewire in the system tray. I manually start each time I want to use it. Yes, I did go thru the LW wizard when I restarted limewire. Also tried deleting and reinstalling.

Now what do I do?????

I really want to get this working on the new PC because its REALLY FAST ( AMD dual core 6400 cpu's, 4 GB memory, 2 320GB 10K rpm drives, etc...)

Thanks,
Jim

Lord of the Rings June 20th, 2008 10:12 AM

1. Decide between windows & AVG firewalls. If it's only things like checking viruses & spyware, etc, fine, but for firewalls should only use one.

2. Make sure none of the computers are using the same connection or listening ports. Routers will reserve a single port for each program on each computer making it inaccessible to the other computers. So try changing their ports under Tools > Options > Advanced > Firewalls. Might need to set it to manual but if you do that, the UPnP for the router won't work so NAT might block incoming. O.o Ports to try: 49152 - 65535
Of course port forwarding would work too.

arijesi June 20th, 2008 10:50 AM

I have erased EVERY INCH of LW on my computer and re-downloaded it about 3 times now. I have checked all my firewalls (McAfee and Inthernet Explorer) disallowed LW and reallowed LW. My listening port is set to where it needs to be. I still cannot connect. Nothing new happened to my computer before LW stopped working, except I uninstalled an older version of LW and replaced with with the Beta version that just came out. Are there links to the Beta LW and the connection issue?

jmlm1977 June 20th, 2008 12:25 PM

OK, I shut down the laptop and removed it from the network. Only the desktop is connected. Changed the port to 49152 in limewire for both the listening port and the manual port forward. Also added port 49152 as the TCP port and the UDP port (did NOT get an error that the port is already used?? ...originally had UDP set to 49154).

For this test I disabled BOTH FIREWALLS. With the new port settings, tried both UPNP listening on port 49152 and manual port forwarding listening on the same port. No combination of new port, UPNP or manual forwarding, firewall(s) on or off, and only 1 pc connected to the router.

Any other suggestions???
Thanks,
Jim

I cannot get a connection when doing a search. My firewall has allowed Limewire. What other options do I have?

jmlm1977 June 20th, 2008 02:06 PM

more info about desktop/laptop setup

Found this reply so I'm filling it in....
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. OS version? WIN XP PRO SP2
2. What firewalls you have? AVG and Windows , both disabled
3. How much ram? 4GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 300GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Cable Modem
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Modem:Motorola Surfboard SVB5120 Router:Linksys Eatherfast w/ 4 port switch
7. Where are you trying to connect from? house
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? LW 4.8 0 Java 1.6.0__06
6. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Optimum Online
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? GOT "Your Test Worked!"
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. No other Computers
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. 2nd try, works perfect on laptop, not on desktop
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? _ click here to see Sample image Do not have blue world Icon at all!
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? Tried both, neither works, originally set up as UPnP.
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...lies/smile.gif Use Windows Firewall and AVG Security Suite. Usually Win Firewall is disabled. For limewire, I disabled both.
16. What country are you living in? USA

Hopfully, this is enough information about my system. The fact that I don't have the blue globe icon might mean something.

Thanks for any help.
Jim

From the computers with LW not working: Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

Have you tried these options: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html

Missed your 2nd post. Ok ... Optimum online are reknown for being problematic. But if one of your LW's works then that shouldn't be the issue. Port forwarding means actually forwarding a port in your router, not just changing settings within LW; PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

So it seems the default port of 6346 is not blocked, just something is interfering in the connection & incoming messages.

Here's an odd suggestion but it might work; try installing FrostWire. If it connects, then close it & open LW & see if it connects.

Try the suggestions in BOTH the previous two posts #1516 & 1517 above this one. :)

Trying frostwire next....

Thanks for the tips, LOTR, I tried fostwire. Worked perfect first time. closed it down, told limewire not to make it the default magnet???, limewire doesnt work.

Aside from the obvious (use frostwire instead of limewire) Any other suggestions before trying all of the stuff in the link you mentioned in your post?

I ended up changing the preferences for Compatability to Windows 98, and it works now! However I now have potential virus threats/trojans on my computer. I'm starting to think iTunes is worth the $$$$$

First, the "delete-the-pref-folder" advice did nothing for me.

Steps:

1) Launch Limewire. See the new "Tips" dialog box? DISABLE the show-tips-at-launch checkbox. Then click "ok" and hope you never see that box again.

2) Go to LimeWire Preferences and disable the auto-connect at launch option.

3) Quit Limewire. Then relaunch Limewire. Then manually "connect" from the menu. Voila!

I surmise that the new Tips box is interfering with the application's ability to connect!

That didn't Help me. It still shows one bar.

im sorry to bother you but i have a question wer is the LimeWire Preferences located at i cant find it?

If I transferred some of my limewire library over to iTunes, will that prevent me from completely uninstalling Limewire in order to reinstall?

LW still not working

I have windows vista and can't seem to find half of what you are asking us to do. I was able to use my LW last night and then I tried to use it today and nothing all day. I have norton 360 and the problem does not lie with them. I have LW on my list of exceptions thru windows firewall, and updated my java and I still can't connect.

I looked in all this meaningless information you provide NON pro users. I do get that 4226 id error and there is no way to fix it. Any help would be appreciated cos I hate to have to use another medium for my songs since for almost 2 years I never had a problem till now!

yellow1053 July 5th, 2008 09:49 PM

jumping on the can't connect bandwagon....

I used to use LW pretty often, but for about 3 or 4 months haven't used it, just too busy. tonight I tried to use it, and it will never connect. I upgraded to the latest basic version, still no difference. I went thru the self help ideas, and have disconnected my router and connected my modem directly to the computer, no difference. I shut off the windows firewall all together, still nothing. I don't use Nortons internet security, or mcafee firewall. the only programs I have running in my taskbar are: Norton's anti virus 2004, Webroot's spy sweeper, Webroot's windows washer, Norton's password manager. That's it, I run a very simple XP Media Center edition pc. I haven't changed ISP's I use Comcast, it's the same modem I used successfully in the past. I don't get any error messages from LW, it just never connects, and always shows the one bar in the lower left corner. any ideas??
thanks.
Jim.
