Ok... Win XP Home SP2 FIREWALL OFF Dell 4300 NVIDIA GeForce 2 MX Graphics Soundbaster Audigy 2 ZS Pro Pentium 4 1.7 gHz 256 MB RAM Linksys 54G USB WiFi adapter, connecting through a BT Voyager 2000 access point (Firewall Off) Sygate Personal Firewall Java (latest version from Sun website) LimeWire 4.9.37 My limewire (or any other P2P program - azureus, WinMX) just won't connect. It's not the router, since i've connected through it in the past, but I was forced to rebuild my PC after a critical driver error - it's fine now. The error's something in my PC but I have no idea what. Sygate is configured to allow uPnP and all Limewire traffic is allowed. It just won't connect. I've done the test on port 6436 (www3.limewire.com:6436) and it works fine. I don't know what's going on. Please help, i'm getting a new iPod with video and want to be able to get content (video and music) for it. Anyone who solves the problem i'll love forever. Thanks, Jamie [EDIT:] If anyone is willing, and feels that they could sort the problem faster through talking, my MSN messenger address is jamie{AT}thesimpleapproach.co.uk. Thanks =). |

Let's try a couple of other tests. You'll need to have LW open at the same time as you do these tests. 1. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www.grc.com/port_6346.htm (Press Probe this port button) Does it say open or closed? 2. http://koti.mbnet.fi/gfactory/ctest/ 3. http://jlh.no-ip.org/connectiontest/ I have a suspicion you may get an error with either tcp or udp. That's not necessarily a problem but might be as these specific tests can be affected by firewalls & NAT. My thoughts are that the incoming might be blocked. (Reasons for keeping LW open whilst you do these tests are (a) Linksys opens the particular port for LW via UPnP, (b) Something about these tests that needs the program to be trying to access the particular port before the test works properly. duh  Try connecting with UP turned off. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Speed & tick disable Ultrapeer capabilities & press apply. My 1st thought is, try another port (even though 6346 is open, this port might be filtered by your isp for p2p.) You may need to adjust your port settings in your firewall. For LW, go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change the listening port to one of the following. You may or may not need to relaunch LW for it to take effect I'm not sure. 80, 64049, 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 10000, 15189, 20282, 22817, 443, 34599, 40475. |
It's not my ISP (PlusNet UK)- a friend is on them and has no issues. Would my USB wifi adapter have any issues with uPnP? NB my router's firewall is unused. Connection tests: 1)Shields UP! - Stealth 2) Finnish site - broken link (404 error) 3) Shareza test - TCP timeout, UDP no response I think i've got the problem, though how i solve it i have no idea. I've been playing around with settings in Sygate (with a guide from the Shareza Wiki) but nothing seems to work. Even without any firewalls on Limewire sticks at the first green bar. I've run a Spybot S&D and a full AVG scan. UP is disabled. I'll try your afterthought (the PM), if you think it's worthwhile, but i can't see it making a difference. After all it's not just limewire, it's Azureus too. Cheers for the help, Jamie |
HELP!! DESPERATE!!! ok guys everytime i try to open limewire it turns my computer screen black and a message pops up saying "check PC display settings"....whats happening?! |

http://www.adslguide.org.uk/hardware...q3/bt-2000.asp start about 60% way down the page about port forwarding. Also see UPnP discussion & issues about 80-90% down the page. This might be your problem. See if it applies or not. If you need to actually manually port forward after all, I don't have specific instructions for this model but there's one for the BT Voyager 2100 here: http://www.portforward.com/english/r...0/Limewire.htm If you do do manual port forwarding, then at the end of the process do this within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. |
Windows Firewall Off (HELP) I have shut my windows firewall off but still, still limewire says that i have a firewall. Is it just me or does Limewire have some problems. Plz Plz tell me what is wrong. Limewire is a great resource. HELP |
CONNECTION PROBLEMS - SOLUTION FOR THOSE USING ROUTERS!!!! Chances are, if you access the internet via a router, you will have connection problems. Basically, you need to do 2 things. 1) Make sure that your PC is set up with a Static IP addess as opposed to obtaining one automatically. 2) Configure the Virtual Server in your Router to enable port 6346 (both UDP and TCP). To do these 2 things; 1) Go here http://www.portforward.com/networking/staticip.htm 2)Go Here http://www.portforward.com/english/r...outerindex.htm Once you have found your Router it will take you to a page that will help you set up any application that requires port forwarding - You will find Limewire conveniently located under the section entitled 'L' Good Luck |
Re: Router suggestions My router's fine. I guarantee. P2P worked before i rebuilt my PC, and now doesn't. 3 questions: 1)Can i get a simple list of all active firewalls? 2)Is there a windows service/component that I need for P2P to work? 3)Would my USB WiFi adapter's software (Linksys WUSB54G) block any specific traffic? Thanks, Jamie |
Guitarded9k is it possible for you to experiment around such as by-passing one of the devices? Try to narrow down where the issue is. 1. No. Just the ones you're aware of. XP, Sygate, Linksys, Voyager?, ISP? Is there a possibility there's an anti-spyware, etc. utility that needs allowance/permission in its settings for some programs to connect with in & out connections? 2. Java 1.4.2 or 1.5. I suppose with SP2 you could look at http://www.lvllord.de/?url=tools to increase you simultaneous connections. SP2 reduces them. Some XP updates also change your settings. 3. Possibly. These devices generally have NAT protection which is arguably a firewall. Linksys devices use UPnP which should allow programs with UPnP ability to communicate directly with them to request the Linksys device to open the appropriate ports. But I don't know about your device. Not all UPnP devices work properly with UPnP but Linksys is generally very reliable. If all fails, manual port forwarding if it's an option with the particular device. Same applies to the Voyager. Is it possible to connect another way just for a trial. Do you have a backup dial up modem? That will also help to point to whether it's the devices at fault. I thought I mentioned it but Plusnet has been known to filter individuals. |
Can't Connect to lime wire some help Pleae!! For the past two days I haven't been able to connect to lime wire but today I thought I would try using my dial up connection and it connected. Whenever I use my cable connection it doesn't connect. I even disconnected my router and I shut off my firewalls and still nothing helps. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this? I even tried the Docs and settings-----user-------.limewire steps and still nothing. So if anyone can help out please let me know |
DavidM1981 Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. Your ISP has probably started blocking P2P apps your are the 4th in the last couple of days. The link below may help. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=49578 |
Miracle!! After a day of going crazy trying to get LW to connect I got fed up so I called optonline my ISP and yelled at them b/c LW connects when I use my dial up or DSL from Verizon i was on the phone with them for about 15 min when i hung up LW was connected but i'm not getting turbo-connection, so I thought this might help optonline users try calling tech support and speaking to them |
i run ms xp ... fix worked for me ... i think ... went to all user names and where the .limewire directory existed i deleted. then shut down instance of limewire and restarted and no good, but, then re-booted, started limewire and it essentially took me thru what seemd to be a re-installation of the program. but when i restarted program it connected immediately, YEAH!! bad thing (and i did not read this in the fix entry) ... i lost all my 'downloads' ... that sorta sucked! but hurray i'm back in the saddle again! dave r |
can anyone help me? I have windows 98 and the basic version of limewire, i purchased imusicshare from imusicshare.com and limewire is the first (and best) choice they give you to download music from, for me limewire will not work. it just won't connect. I'm pretty dumb when it comes to computers and i have no idea what firewall, proxy, port, or isp means. So none of the solutions posted help me, even though i have tried some of them. Also i don't have the folder Documents And Settings so i couldn't try sdaswani's solution. Can anyone help me?? |
v0ne 1st & foremost, you've been scammed. You got LW from a scam site. LW Basic is FREE. 1. Check this to see that you really have LW Basic: Shows About LW Pro 2. See Membership? - **WARNING ** - Download p2p Clients ONLY Thru Official Sites (click on link) 3. You'll find that site you got yours from here Known Scam Sites (click on link) 4. Get some tips here get your $$$ BACK!!! (music members) & perhaps http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...ghlight=paypal 5. Uninstall your version of LW since if it doesn't come directly from the LW downld site, it could contain some internal changes & the addition of spyware, adware, etc. Then install the official version from here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
can anyone help me? well i reinstalled and the program even looks different now but it still won't connect. i didn't purchase limewire, i purchased imusicshare? i'm not sure if it was a scam. anyone know why limewire won't connect? |
i have just bought a new laptop and downloaded limewire from limewire.com. I am living in university halls of residence, so connect through the university network, but on my old laptop I had no problems with limewire through the network, however with my new laptop, it's saying I have a firewall, even though I disabled windows firewall, and i have uninstalled Norton as I hate it!! Help  |
2 problems I can see. 1. most uni's nowadays block or filter p2p sharing. 2. Disable your XP firewall; go to the control panel, double click on Windows Firewall, check the disable box / http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...842#post178842 (see links) Norton: * Configuring Norton Internet Security |

So what version of LW were you using before on your "old" laptop dancing routine? (whoops ... silly joke!) Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 8. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)? 9. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? |
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) Windows xp home edition (sp2) 2. What firewalls you have? Just the xp one... had norton but uninstalled it 3. How much ram? 2GB!!! 4. Hard Disk space available? 80GB 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) Broadband 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? I plug straight into a wall socket which then connects to uni servers. 7. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 4.9.37 and 1.5.0_06 8. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)? Uni's own 9. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. The whole University 10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? The connection has timed out. The server at www3.limewire.com is taking too long to respond. I was using 4.6 on my old laptop |
grrrrrrrrrrreat! this works great. thx :D |
princessamy86 it seems the school has blocked port 6346 which LW uses by default, else, something on your computer is blocking that port. Which sounds like a firewall. (The school may have recently changed their policy on bandwidth use. I'm sure they can detect gnutella & other p2p network programs running on the school's network.) Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced & change the listening port from 6346 to another. Also, I doubt UPnP will work I don't know. Try setting it to manual port forward. And also change the port no. Try these ports: 1111, 80, 3500, 4008, 1203, 10000, 15189, 20282, 22817, 443, 427, 34599, 40475, 64049, 20-22. You should probably use the same port no. for both listening port & manual PF port. You'll need to press the apply button after the change. I'm not sure whether you need to relaunch or not. But go to File menu > Disconnect. Wait a min, then File>Connect. Give each port you try at least 15+ mins to try to connect. |
I have just found out that the Uni blocked the ports last week so was a coincidense I'd bought a new laptop  |
Can't start OR connect, for that matter. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, but I'm new and I've got a problem. I have a laptop, Windows XP, and it had limewire 4.8 (or whichever version came before 4.9), and it worked fine. Then, I downloaded the new version, and every time I try to open limewire, it just shows that opening screen and says, "LimeWire was unable to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking LimeWire's access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire." Now, I need to mention that I'm not very skilled when it comes to computers. I tried a few things, like restarting and taking off the Windows Firewall. I took a look at the LimeWire help, and it only gives directions on what to do from the limewire screen... but not even that loads. I just get the logo and I have no idea how I'm supposed to configure it and stuff... Help!! |
Rather than disable your firewall, it's much safer to configure it. Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) If your firewall is already configured, then just let LW do the rest when you come to the firewall configure part when 1st opening LW. But yes, LW 4.9 is much more sensitive to firewalls than LW 4.8.1 was. 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 4. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 5. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 6. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 7. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)? 8. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. |
hI Guys, Well , I have been reading this topic for hours but I can't find the solution for my connexion probleme with limewire To resume my situation: Like 1 month ago, limewire decide to stop working 'it say that I am firewalled' and it can't connect to the network *I use win XP SP2 *My connection is broadband t1 cable direclty connected to the bulding network *I use only one computer * My firewall is well configurated (kaspersky with 6346 ports both udp & tcp open, the test ' http://www3.limewire.com:6346 ' say that Your test worked! ) *the windows firewall is off * I called my isp customer service (mdi access chicago), they told me that no ports has been blocked for p2p * I have installed limewire 4.10 and java 1.5 Only 1 block is green from the connection quality and limewire still detect a firewall!! I can't find any solution Thanks for your help ;) |
paolini what's changed since it was working? And what have you tried? It might sound very basic, but try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.) What modem/router device brand name & model number do you have. See if it has a UPnP (Universal Plug & Play) switch on the outside. If you know how to log into the device using your browser, check to see if there's a UPnP option. If yes, enable it. |
Thank you Lord Of the rings for ur reply Well I try severals times to delete LW preferences but it didn't work Quote:
I don;t use a personal router or modem, I am directly connected to the swich board of the bulding, unless they install a hardware firewall to lock P2P transfert, I don't see, I called the ISP but they said that they don't change anything in there config I try other gnutella software like sharezza , morpheus but same thing, it's seem like I can go anymore to Gnutella network:confused: |
paolini With LW 4.10.x & later, LW now has a preferences folder in a new location. It might be worth trying to delete it also whilst LW is CLOSED! Use your search function, go to options & change view mode to show "hidden" files & folders. Then search for limewire It's found here: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\LimeWire The Application Data folder is "hidden". You can see an example of how to find & delete it from a FrostWire example here: How to delete your FrostWire Preferences folder But of course, it's the limewire folder you search & delete. Check that the one you select is from the above location (ie: within the Application Data folder!!!) And of course only do it whilst LW is "closed"! If this doesn't fix it, well I don't know. You could try other ports. Here's a list of several to try: 1111, 3500, 4008, 1203, 10000, 15189, 80, 88, 8080, 8000, 20282, 22817, 443, 427, 34599, 40475, 64049, 20-21, 3689, 631, 139, 548, 19515, 22091, 25079. ie: Go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls. Change the listeing port to one of the above. Also set your port to manual port forward & change the port to the same. There's a lot of ports there but if you're determined to get LW running, then it's worth the persistence. Don't forget to press apply after making any changes. Then go to LW's menu bar, File>Disconnect, wait a minute, then File>Connect. Give each no. at least 20+ mins to try to connect. Failing this, you could try proxy options. There's different types. A Fix for those whose ISP's block Limewire pages 1 - 3 which have links to alternative instructions. |
Windows XP can't find no such dir Preference or file??? Looked everywhere. |
In my 2nd last post, there's a link which describes & has samples at bottom of page about how to find .limewire folder. However, if you're new to LW & version 4.10 is your 1st version then see my last post. ie: Search for limewire not .limewire & you should find it within the Application Data folder ("IF" you set your search to show "hidden" files & folders before you do the search! Otherwise your search won't find it!) ;) |
CONNECTION PROBLEM WIN XP HELP, I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING ON THE CONNECTION PROBLEM LIST AND STILL CAN NOT CONNECT,I HAVE NORTON FIREWALL WHICH I WENT AS FAR AS DELETING IT COMPLETLY FROM MY COMPUTER AND I STILL GET MESSAGE FIREWALL BLOCKED. |
connecting I tried the fix and still cannot get connected??? The windows fire wall appears to be blocking (getting the same error message as some of the other postings) even though I am allowing the limewire content on the exceptions. As for the fix on the website, due to the firewall I can't start lime wire to get to tools option to locate the port. Any other ideas? |
Wright1 It appears from you post that yours is a install problem since you say you can not get it to start to get to the tools option try following the instructions below. You will need to install Java and LimeWire manually First go to the first link. You can find Links to java in there Download Java to your hard drive by putting a mark in the save to disc box. Save it to my documents or wherever you save downloads from the internet. Do the same with LimeWire the second link will take you there. Now with that done click on start then control panel add/remove programs and see if Java is listed on the list if it is uninstall it. Do the same with LimeWire if the un installers were not loaded you may have to manually delete the files. But in most cases this is not necessary. Now click on the Java installer you saved to your hard drive and follow the instructions after you have completed that do the same with LimeWire. Please post back and let us know if it worked. If it did not I will give further instructions on manually deleting Java and LimeWire. http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |

Grandpa, It worked! Back up and running. Thanks for your help. |
bought acount On Dec. 27th I purchased the limewire for 18 bucks. Today I went to use it and couldn't get connected. I had to re-install the program again. It didn't work so I went to the web-site to contact the company and it asked for my email address. I typed it in and came back invalid. I then went to my bank account to make sure the payment was sent and received and it was on the 27th. SO how can I get a hold of a company rep and get this issue with getting connected fixed? SOmeone plz email me at: reconron3@hotmail.com? Thanx. |
downloads stopping Ok I have had this problem for awhile where I'll be downloading at upwards of 250 kb/s depending on the number of files, then they all stop and I lose connection to limewire after 5 minutes or so, I have port forwarded etc and nothing works. I have done the test where you leave limewire open for 20-30 minutes and do the bug test and the result is false. I am running XP with SP2 512 DDR 120 gig hardrive D-Link DI-604 router Speedtouch 510 highspeed modem ISP: kw.igs.net, DSL 1 meg service running javaw 1.5 or what ever it is running Limewire 4.10 and Frostwire 4.10 aswell Windows firewall is enabled I have a nVidia network card firewall enabled the test works |
hyper89 Do you have to reboot to get a connection back |
reconron3 You can PM mformell they take care of the purchasing and e-mail issues you can send a PM at the link below. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/member...o&userid=27786 If you have a connection issue post it here or start a new thread and somebody will probably be able to help you. |
yes I do have to reboot to get the connection back, |
Wow! I read this ENTIRE thread and still can't get a "turbo" connection like I used to. I have: Pent IV 540 3.2GHz HT XP Home SP2 Alltel DSL (3MB speed) SpeedStream DSL Modem D-Link DI-524 wireless Router LimeWire Pro 4.10.0 1 Gig Ram 250 Gig HDD (lots left) Kaspersky Anti-virus Personal 5.0.388 Windows Firewall I've deleted the .limewire file in Docs&Settgs user file. I've set all firewall and router settings for correct port usage. Most of the time I'll just get the "connecting" message, when I do get a connection, it's a "fair" one and I can't download from any source no matter how many users are shown! Please Help! Limewire has been the best P2P up to this point. I've used this EXACT setup B4, but since upgrading (and downgrading) I've been unable to connect. |
hyper89 There appears to be a bug right now in LimeWire go to the link below and see if it sounds familiar to you. If so they are working on it right now. One thing you can do is lessen the number of simultaneous downloads you are running to 3 or less that seemed to help with me. If you would like to they could use some impute from you. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=50743 |
Grandpa I read your other thread and I'm having the exact same problem, when I get the time I'm going to try to post my tests and thanks for the help |
