where do i find the preferences that i need to delete i am lost |
every time i open lw it shows the normal download options such an audio and photo but when i try to download a sond it says it is trying to connect to a server every timei try!! please help i don't know what the problem is |
Your 1st question: To delete your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire (see the example images at bottom of that page!) Instead of using an audio search, try using the All Types search & then press on the audio filter to the left of the search results. ;) :) |

I quickly looked through those and dont see how they could help. I have done the prefernce thing and shut off all firewalls and still no luck. I seem to think its a router/network issue as it shuts down my network for my computer when i try to connect to LW it shuts me off the network for 10 mins. Dont get it but it works on the other computer so it must be either my computer and how its set up on the network and router. I dont get it. were all running XP pro but i di notice mine has more icons under network connections. The one computer upstaris has jsut Local Are connection and thats how it connects to the routher and everytihn works for him. Wher i have 1394 connection as one icon and Network bridge as another icon and a local area connection as the last and it is never enabled it usually is disabled but does not change anytihng either way so the network and internet is running off the other two connections whatever they are??? |
Hmmm networked connections can be a little tricky. You're using a bridge which in itself may be a problem. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Can you give us a total desciption of your set up: 1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) 2. What firewalls you have? 3. How much ram? 4. Hard Disk space available? 5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? 7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? 8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 9. How may computers connected to network & how many are using LW? 10. What's the speed of your isp plan (what speed are you people paying for) & (b) What speeds does your friend get? |
The test works fine. 1) XP Pro All service Packs and updates done as far as i know. 2)Windows firewall is off and i have norton systemworks 2003 and there is no firewall with that as far as i know. I even turn it off and it makes no difference anyway so i doont think its that. 3) 1 gig of ram 4) 40 Gig HDD and 15 or so free 5) Connection is wireless high speed i would call it cable as it is from a cable compnay. 6)Router is a Dl-524. The internets modem says ADC-V251 Wireless Modem on the side. 7) At home all the computer are at home 8) got version 4.8.1 PRO and the newest Java you had shown to downlaod previsouly the JRE or something i beleive it was JRE1.5.0.04 or something like that. 9)There are 3 computer connected and occasionly a Laptop wirelessly The laptop has LW and it works for it and one of the computer has it and it works fine. 10) I couldnt tell you but i know when i test the connection speed on DSLreports.com or other websites its get anywhere from 700 k to 1.3 MB surfing speed. I know when i had LW before i could DL at well over 100 K, not that that means anything but it gives you an idea. Not sure what te other computers get never tested them but it has to be close. And i know other peopel with the same internet around are getting slower or maybe equal speeds. No one is getting a faster connection. Hope his helps as i greatly miss LW  |
OK I DID ALL OF THAT TRY NOW PLEASE TRY IT NOW "Sparing With Friend" when i highlight the name of it is says this "Amature Boxing Video" Year 2005 and it is 47,070 KB Type: wmv |
New Mac User How do I access the suer section so i can delete the limewire preference section? Thanks |
i can't get my limewire to work and it's been about a year. i'd tried the path that u said to take and after all that process it still doesn't work. i don't think it works. if not then i think i need a refund. let me kno thanks, |
ok, ive done everything everyone's said to do throughout this 45-page thread. ive deleated the .limewire thing, disabled the tips, disabled the speed thing, and nothing worked. i downloaded kazaa and it worked, but i hate kazaa and limewire is in fact better. so now i assume that my problem has to do with my ISP, as you have suggested could be a problem. so what do i do to fix it? i have windows xp and dsl. someone please help. |
Please answer the set of questions I posted earlier as well as do the tests I suggested. Then we can have a look at your situation & see what might be wrong re: settings or abnormal set-up, eg: router, etc. |
I already did that???? |
ok 1. OS version?: windows xp 2. What firewalls you have? netgear 108 mps 3. How much ram? 504 MB 4. Hard Disk space available? 34.8 GB 5. Connection type?: cable modem 6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? RCA DCM 315 7. Where are you trying to connect from? home 8. What version of Limewire & Java do you have?: Limewire Pro 4.8.1, Java 1.4.2_05 9. Who is your isp provider? Earthlink Cable through TimeWarner 10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.: new problem, have had it for almost 6 months, it worked perfectly until I tried to switch to Pro, first problemsabout a month ago, gave up on it after about a week, then tried again. |
trippinout38 sometimes when you swap over to pro it's advisable to delete the LW preferences whilst LW is closed; instructions: Fixes for Limewire I suggest this b/c your LW was obviously working ok before. Clay911: see Configuring Norton Internet Security I also have a DI Link but I was forced to forward a port. I don't think DI Link use Universal Plug and Play (UPnP.) If you wish to try port forwarding then use the following instructions very carefully & in that order. Most important is setting up a static ip. Also do a separate port forward (PF) for both TCP & UDP. Steps: 1. Set up a static ip 2. Forward Port 6346, instructions for this & setting up a static ip here: http://www.portforward.com/dlink/di-524.htm (Find LimeWire on the list when you get to the PF stage!) 3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that. |
Help please My laptop wont connect to any filesharing programs.Im using a wireless high speed internet connection, but i can search the web and can connect to Aim. I tried using Limewire and it wont connect as the other programs do. I followed the steps and deleted the ".limewire" folder, But i still can't connect. Any tips will be realy great =\. |
My bet is you have a blocked port. Probably due to your wireless but let's hope if that's so ... it's not your isp. Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? What brand & model of connection device do you use? It would've helped had you answered the above questions. I can only help with as much as you tell us. |
Yes, i checked the my firewall gives access to limewire, and i followed those intructions on the link u posted. and the the test worked. but im not sure wat kind brand/model this connection is cause its my friends and i dont know how to check it |
Go to this site & choose a file to downld: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml & if you can downld it, see if there's more than one source under the # column. If yes, try to browse them. This might help you to get started. |
Negative it wont let me d/l it. Do u have aim so u can help me easier? |
No I don't. Is is possible for you do by-pass your connection devices. Let's see if it's the device at fault. Which ISP provider do you go thru? Do you only have one firewall (XP has its own firewall!)? |
im sorry i dont know what isp it goes thru. how do i check? and its Windows firewall i think the 1 my friend has |
thanx for your help, i found the problem. I had 2 firewalls, and they were getting in the way of eachother. |
I can't get Limewire to connect no matter what I do. I tried the deleting the directory or whatever thing. I tried the adding Gnutella to the firewall exceptions. I don't have Norton Internet Security (atleast I don't think I do, I tried looking for it all over). I tried turning off Windows Firewall. Unless there's something I didn't do already, I don't know what to do. I have Windows XP, a dial-up connection, Limewire version 4.8.1, and Windows Firewall (can't find any other firewalls). It uses a modem. Can someone please help me!?!? |
Shadow921 you use an aol proxy. AOL is reknown for problems for LW users. If you're using a proxy, did you configure that into your LW settings (LW's menu Tools>Options>Advanced>Proxy/Firewall.) |

Can't connect I've tried everything in this forum and can't seem to connect either. My ISP is COX and I am running XP. Please help! |
looking for song ok this has nothing to do with your post, but didn't know how to make my own post. so i am looking for this old techno 80's song called New York New York, can't remember who sings it, but it is an old time favorite, if anyone knows it let me know, i have been searching for it to download. thanks. |
Nortan internet security In case you do have nortan internet security. A.Open it B.Select Personel Firewall C.Select Configure on the right of the screen D.On the new screen that comes up, select Peograms E.Find Limewire and make sure its on Automatic or Permit All F. If not select modify and change it to Permit All |
POSSIBLE CONNECTING SOLUTION OK let me turn the apple cart over. I battled for more than six weeks to no avail to get LW connected. My ISP assured me he was not blocking me and yet no connection. Not even WinMX was connecting. Reading through sites as well as Microsoft forum it appeared that I might have a Winsock problem. I ran a repair WinXP Pro install and since then I have been up and running with no problems. I do not suggest everyone to do this but I am sharing my success with you. I run with Windows Firewall and Microsoft Anti Spyware on. For what it's worth I am sure everybody knows the importance of Winsock.dll etc |
My limeiwre wasnt connecting to the internet when i opened it up so i deleted it and downloaded it again. now whenever i open up limewire it says this message: 'Limewire was unable to instilize and start. this is usually due to a firewall blocking limewires access to the internet or loopback connections on the local machine. please allow limewire access to the internet and restart limewire' how do i overcome this so limewire will open up. Thanks |
connection I've had it!! I have done everything on the Limewire website & still can't connect. Program just sits there & says "enabling" but never connects. Running AOL on Win XP-I have even disabled all the firewalls to no avail |
Go to Control Panel->Windows Firewall Click on the Exceptions Tab Click on Add Program Then add Limewire to the list Then make sure Limewire is checked and hit 'OK' Thats how I fixed mine. |
It says firewall is disabled but for some reason still blocks the program. |
Malicious Code I just D/L this limewire program and paid for this service, TODAY. when i started using it i got to D/L 5 songs. then it D/C. I tried to reconnect and windows refused to start the program. I tried to startup the program again and windows told me that there was a malicious code in the program and I shouldn't open it. I tried anyways and the window wouldn't even pop-up. So I reinstalled it. Still unsuccessful. I deleted everything and D/L a new program off of the internet. Still nothing. knowing about this virus I had already cleaned my system before trying to start up the program again and D/L ing the new ones. I might call Customer Care, and try to get my money ack because that was a ripoff. Unless you can solve this problem. |
it didn't work I tried your thing to fix it 3 times and it didn't work. on top of that I lost everything I had saved on limewire. right now I am trying it get it back but I must have done something wrong |
Jason, read thru the virus threads on the forum. There are some worms & trojans to look out for. How to stop them? Keep your anti-virus programs active & make sure you have up to date virus definitions. There's some good free av programs out there. Check all incoming files/before you attempt to open them!!!!!!!!! the guy who can't connect how did you lose everything? If you keep your setting set to default for downlding then there's no way you should have lost anything you downlded earlier. Earlier in the thread (a page or 2 back), I list a set of questions asking for details of everybody's set up & some simple tests to do. If you can answer those questions & tests & we'll see how we can help you. |
deleting preferences Has worked so far...thanks. |
I REALLY NEED HELP! PLEASE! when ever i search... a box comes up saying "your search is 2 specific" whats with that?!! thankyou alot if u can right back :):):) MItch |

help! Hey, I have aol and I have one green bar at the bottom of limewire. I was wondering if that was normal for a modem or if I am having connection problems also. Is there anything that I can do to help me connect better? I can do a search but it turns up with nothing when it finishes...I also tried to delete the folder but that didn't help any. |
me again I went through some of the pages and tried some of the methods again and I still got nothing to work. I am on XP and my isp is AOL. I don't know what a proxy setting is so if I need to change that could you please be a little bit more specific than you would with other people that understand that jargon. Also, when I go to do a search I get this message: "Limewire is currently connecting to the network. Your search may not return many results until you are fully connected to the network." I have the basic version of limewire. Please somebody tell me what I am doing wrong before I throw my computer out of a window!!!! |
Work for me WindowsXp(Service pack2) |
Lots of people who use AOL seem to have problems connecting. I don't know of any simple answers. Have you seen AOL upgrade causing connection problems? Remember it's only wise to keep one firewall active since 2 can interfere with each other. Firewall configuration instructions (click on link) If you are using McAfee firewall or another then disable windows XP firewall (go to the control panel, double click on Windoze Firewall, check the disable box.) Oh & re: earlier poster about search is too specific see Search is too Specific (click on link) |

Router = Lynksys Wireless-B model befw11s4 ver. 4 (I even tried a direction connection w/o avail.) 7.home 8. LW vers. 4.9.7 Java: 1.5.0_03 9. 2 computers, one limewire. this one is connected directly to the router. (Not wireless) 10. I believe its 256-512MB transfer rate. Basically cable modem. |

>>>>>>>Ive tried this several times and im still stuck in the same position with limewire. I Try to open the program and i get a message that says " Limewire was unalbe to initialize and start. This is usually due to a firewall program blocking LimeWires access to the internet or lookback connections on the local machine. Please allow LimeWire access to the internet and restart LimeWire." I am very sure that there is no firewall blocking it as i have the firewall turned off all together. Does anyone have any suggestions of what i should do? |
