Wow, looks like connection problem with this software are widespread with 900 replies to this topic alone.

I have just installed the software and followed all the instructions, including firewall instructions.

When I open limewire and begin a search it says connecting, you will not get many results until connected.

I tnever connects. I tried the fix suggested at the beginning of this thread. I am connected to the internet (hence this post). Why does this software not work?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Aces

Grandpa January 7th, 2006 11:10 PM

Actually 900 out of 100s of thousands or millions isn't bad at all very low percentage and if you looked the first post was 11/3/2003 that was 794 days ago about 1.3 a day.

Anyway we will need a little more info in order to be able to help you.

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (Eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (Eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your ISP provider? ( AOL/MSN/Comcast/Tiscal)
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
These details are vital if you want us to find out what your connection problem is.

* Did you configure your firewall so it allows LW full access (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? Windows XP, using Firefox
2. What firewalls you have? Ones that work.
3. How much ram? Enough.
4. Hard Disk space available? A lot
5. Connection type? Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home
8. What version of Limewire? 4.10.12 and Java 1.4.2.
9. Who is your ISP provider? Adelphia
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No.

It's simple, I've had limewire for years and have had no problems. I have one of the oldest versions, something poped up and said 'you must download the latest limewire', and alas I did. Since then I can't connect.

Certaintly it can't be the fault of space available or ram.

Grandpa January 8th, 2006 12:33 AM

4.10.2 Requires 1.5.6 Java you can get it at the link below.Uninstall your current java and use the offline installer

ps in the lower right corner the the icon for firewall says limewire has detected a firewall.

Grandpa January 8th, 2006 10:47 AM

There is a firewall somewhere blocking it. Do you use a router or do you live in apartments where they provide the Internet service. One thing you might try is turning Windows Firewall off then start LimeWire and see if it connects. But remember to turn it back on.

aces and 8's January 8th, 2006 11:02 AM

No router. Not in an apartment. Turned off firewall from windows, still nothing. I have no other firewall on my computer yet it says a firewall is detected.

Any other ideas?

Grandpa January 8th, 2006 02:42 PM

Some modems do have firewalls in them but they are pretty rare what is the name and model number of your modem.

I've been having problems with Limewire for the last several months. It seems that every time I think I get it fixed, it stops working again. I just got a brand new laptop from Dell and I'm having the same problems on this one too. I have a work laptop that I can bring home, and on that one I have no problem using Limewire, I just can't seem to get it to work on my personal one, which makes me think that it's not my ISP blocking Limewire or my router's built in firewall either. I've turned all my firewalls off and that didn't fix the problem either, so it seems to be something other than firewalls. Although I wouldn't say that I'm an expert with computers and networking, I'm definately not a beginner...it's just frustrating when I can't figure something like this out. Here's my computer's info:

1. OS version? Windows XP Media Center Edition
2. What firewalls you have? Windows and Trend Micro
3. How much ram? 2 GB
4. Hard Disk space available? 35+ GB
5. Connection type? Cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? D Link 624 Wireless
7. Where are you trying to connect from? Home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? 4.10.3 and 1.5.0_06
9. Who is your ISP provider? Northland Cable (local cable company)
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? No
11. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? Says the test worked.

Can anyone help me? I've tried for several months and since it wasn't working I've been using my work computer to download and then transferring them with a jump drive... Kind of lengthy process for some MP3's...

aces and 8's January 9th, 2006 11:10 PM

This is exactly the same problem I am still having. Seems like many others are too. Is this a problem inherant to Limewire 4.10.3? was there a similar issue with 4.9? A friend of mine with the same OS and Virus proctection and same service provider has no problem with 4.9.

boricua365 January 10th, 2006 01:36 PM

I had tried it a couple of months ago before I got my new laptop with the 4.9 version and I ran into the same problem... I'm almost thinking of giving up on trying to figure it out and get the Limewire Pro for $18 and calling their tech support number... But I'd love it if someone can actually figure this out instead...

aces and 8's January 10th, 2006 06:09 PM

That's the thing though, Limewire Pro is just a faster version of the same program. What makes anyone think that Limewire Pro will work any better?

I would gladly shell out $20 for the Pro version, but I wanted to try the software first. How do I know I won't be in the same boat after buying Pro (but $20 lighter)?

The wireless device seems to be the problem in my opinion. Most have nat firewalls & wireless can be troublesome to connect thru. Have a close look at the sticky at the top of this section ... paricularly the very 1st listing. See what you can find about your actiontec

aces and 8's January 12th, 2006 05:31 PM

I am also using dsl but not wireless and am having the exact same problem as dragon (says starting to connect but never does and firewall icon) with same results on tests. Is there a problem with dsl and the software?

Grandpa January 12th, 2006 08:09 PM

aces and 8's

Your answer to #12 says you are being blocked it is either by a firewall or your ISP. I do not know which but you can try different ports and see if that helps. Your ISP is not on the list of known providers that block P2P but that does not mean they are not blocking.

The link below may help but I don't know have you tried any other P2P apps.

I went to Sheilds UP ( http://www.grc.com/port_6346.htm ) and did the port test it said that it was in stealth mode. I also used the http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ and it said test worked. I havent tried any other sharing files so i dont know if they will work.

Grandpa January 13th, 2006 10:19 AM

I see your RWIN is set to low for your connection you should set it between 125,000 and 130,000 for your connection speed.

Your avg ping 79 X 1.5 = 118.5 X connection sped 1085 = 128,572 is your recommended RWIN

You can download DrTCP at the link below and reset your RWIN with it you must reboot for the changes to take affect.

http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp

Also I am not exactly sure what problem you are having is you wrote
Quote:

I've tried for several months and since it wasn't working I've been using my work computer to download and then transferring them with a jump drive... Kind of lengthy process for some MP3's...
But you didn't explain what your problem is. Other than one works and the other doesn't.

Although you do talk about firewall issues which leads me to believe it is connection issue. You did say one works and the other doesn't. I am assuming you are using both at home on the same connection. Check to make sure that limeWire is set up the same on both same ports etc. Your router does have a firewall in it but if one is working and the other isn't this should not be an issue unless one is using Port forward and the other isn't remember each must have a static IP address if you are port forwarding. Check and make sure.

Changing your RWIN is not going to help you to connect but it will help your data transfer speeds. I have a feeling you new computer needs to have a static IP set up on it but I am not sure you did not mention how LimeWire was set up on your work computer. But if LimeWire works on one and you are using the same connection then it should work on the other if it is setup the same.

dragon__egg January 14th, 2006 10:43 PM

I have a desktop computer that is connected to my router/modem through a bridge. I installed limewire on it and it has no problem connecting. it shows no firewall and is turbo charged. so that narrows it down to my laptop. i also installed morpheus (on the Laptop) just to test the connection and it shows starting connection and a firewall.

Grandpa January 15th, 2006 02:06 PM

Have you configured your laptop connection settings the same as your desktop. I see your router supports UPnP is you desktop set to port Forward or UPnP. Set the laptop up the same.

The link below is for setting your router/computer for Port Forward remember you must set up LimeWire and your computer up the same on all machines. If you are port forwarding each computer must have it's own static IP address.

http://portforward.com/english/route...G/Limewire.htm

boricua365 January 15th, 2006 10:35 PM

Let me be more clear on what my problem is: When I try to connect from my personal laptop, I get the error that my computer is trying to connect to the network. About 2 months ago I reset my wireless router (button on the back of the device) and limewire worked for the rest of that evening, but then didn't the next time I tried to use it. It just says that "connecting" message whenever I do a search.

On my work laptop (the one that LW works on) the firewall settings are set to UPnP and the "listen on port" is set to 40530, and when I set those same settings on my new personal laptop, it still doesn't work. I went to my router settings and changed it to static instead of dynamic (hopefully I did this right), and then LW stopped working on my work laptop too. Both computers starting running super slow when I opened LW also...

I wonder if my personal is not set up for UPnP? I guess I'm just pretty confused cuz I'm not too savvy on this firewalling stuff...

Also, I installed the Dr TCP program and changed my RWIN to what you suggested. Until I get LW connecting, I guess I won't know what difference it makes, but thanks for the suggestion...

ekfh January 16th, 2006 01:43 PM

I have Windows 2000...not xp and I cant connect. I tried deleting that .limewire file and that didnt work...Oh yea im connected thru a linksys router with a wireless adapter. But I disabled the firewall and limewire still said that it was on. Could there be another firewall? The router also Supports UpNp so i dunno what to do.

boricua365 January 16th, 2006 02:47 PM

Also I went to the link from dragon_egg (http://www.grc.com/port_6346.htm) and it says that my 6346 port is closed. So obviously I need to open that port or use UPnP, but I thought I'd already opened the port 6346. I went to the windows firewall and put 2 exceptions on the list, one for TCP port 6346 and the other for UDP port 6346. I also went on my router's settings and followed the instructions at this link: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1331#604

Hopefully this info helps a bit more, thanks grandpa

Set your router and all of your computers for UPnP do not set the listening port on limewire set it to UPnP LimeWire will find it's own port. Reset you computer connection to it's default settings.

Click on start/Control Panel/Network connections/Local area connection or whatever connection you use to connect to the Internet/Properties/Internet Properties(TCP/IP)/Properties.

Put a dot in Obtain an IP Address automatically

Put a dot in Obtain an DNS Server address automatically

Then Click OK

Your Linksys router probably has a firewall in it what model is it.
If you know how to enable UPnP in your router enable it and set LimeWire to use UPnP.

Mac OSX

I'm using OSX and this didn't work for me. I was using Limwire fine for about a month and all of a sudden it stopped loading. I click on the icon and it just bounces in my dock. I've deleted and reinstalled it and tried your fix and still the icon just bounces on the dock and nothing happens. When I tried to get support (I purchased PRO) the website doesn't recognize my e-mail address and it's like I never purchased it. I still have the webpage for downloading the software, but Limewire doesn't have a record of me.

Can someone help me?

Okay, I've spent the last hour reading throught posts on this forum trying to get my LimeWire to work. I started using it several months ago and it always was a bit picky about connecting - but it usually fully connected at some point in the day. Then about two weeks ago it stopped connecting and I've tried everything to get it to work again.

I deleting the user/.limewire preferences file -- didn't work.
I stopped allowing the "tips" to come up at startup -- didn't work.
I disallowed sharing with ultrapeers -- didn't work.
I changed my ISP to allow Gnutella with the directions from the LimeWire website -- didn't work (although there still is the little firewall icon in front of the globe in the lower left hand corner BUT that was usually there when LimeWire connected fine for me before.)
I changed my preferences so LimeWire does not start up when my computer starts up and I have to connect manually -- didn't work.

So, are there any other things out there that I haven't tried yet? I'm beginning to get very frustrated! I just want to download music; is that too much to ask?
